Chapter Two: The Astronomical Foundations of the Summer Solstice — How Did the Ancestors Determine "Daylight at Its Longest"$15

I. Gnomon Shadow-Measurement: The Ancient Wisdom of Measuring the Sun

How did the ancestors establish the exact day of the Summer Solstice$16 The answer lies concealed within an exceedingly ancient and ingenious astronomical instrument — the guibiao (圭表), or gnomon-and-ruler.

The Rites of Zhou (Zhouli, "Offices of Earth, Grand Director of Multitudes") records: "By the method of the earth gnomon, one measures the depth of the soil, corrects the sun's shadow, and thereby determines the Center of the Earth." The guibiao consists of two parts: the biao (表), a pole set vertically upright, and the gui (圭), a graduated ruler laid horizontally along the true north-south line. When the noonday sun shines, the pole casts a shadow upon the ruler. By measuring the length of this shadow, the ancestors could precisely calculate the sun's position and thereby determine the solar terms.

Why can the gnomon determine the Summer Solstice$17 As previously noted, the noonday sun is highest at the Summer Solstice, and therefore the pole's shadow is shortest. The ancestors needed only to measure the noonday shadow each day and record its changes. When the shadow shortened day by day, reached its minimum on a certain day, and then began lengthening day by day again — that day of shortest shadow was the Summer Solstice. Likewise, the day of longest shadow was the Winter Solstice. This is a method relying purely on observation, requiring no complex theory, and precisely because of its simplicity, the Two Solstices became the earliest solar terms identified by the ancestors.

The Zhoubi Suanjing (The Arithmetical Classic of the Gnomon, whose astronomical knowledge largely derives from the pre-Qin era) records a detailed set of shadow data, explicitly proposing theoretical shadow lengths for the Summer and Winter Solstices and using these as baselines to calculate shadow lengths for all solar terms throughout the year. This demonstrates that, by the pre-Qin period at the latest, Chinese astronomers could accurately determine the Two Solstices with the gnomon and construct a complete calendrical system upon that basis.

There is a point here worth reflecting upon: measuring shadows may seem simple, but it requires extraordinary patience and precision. The daily difference in noonday shadow length is minuscule, especially around the Summer Solstice, when the sun's positional change is at its slowest — this is precisely the characteristic of zhi: upon reaching the extreme, motion nearly halts. The zhi of the Summer Solstice, in terms of astronomical observation, manifests precisely as the sun's north-south movement "pausing." English calls this "solstice," from the Latin sol (sun) plus sistere (to stand still), meaning "the sun stands still." That the ancestors of East and West converged upon this observation of "the sun's pause" testifies that this is a profound recognition rooted in the celestial phenomena themselves, transcending civilizational boundaries.

II. Ecliptic Longitude Ninety Degrees: The Sun Directly Over the Tropic of Cancer

In the language of modern astronomy, the Summer Solstice is the moment when the sun reaches ecliptic longitude ninety degrees.

Ecliptic longitude is the sun's coordinate along the ecliptic — the projection of Earth's orbital plane onto the celestial sphere. The ancients divided the full circle into three hundred and sixty degrees, taking the vernal equinox as zero degrees. Every fifteen degrees of the sun's travel marks a new solar term. When the sun reaches ninety degrees, it is the Summer Solstice.

At this moment, the sun shines directly upon the Tropic of Cancer (approximately 23.5 degrees north latitude). This is the northernmost latitude that the sun can directly illuminate during the year. Afterward, the sun's direct point begins its southward return, until at the Winter Solstice it shines directly upon the Tropic of Capricorn.

Why is it that when the sun directly illuminates the Tropic of Cancer, the Northern Hemisphere has its longest day and shortest noonday shadow$18 Because the sun is at its highest position relative to the Northern Hemisphere, and sunlight strikes the earth at its most nearly vertical angle. The more nearly vertical the angle, the more light and heat a given area receives; hence the Summer Solstice period is when the Northern Hemisphere receives the most intense solar radiation. The sun traces its longest arc across the sky and remains above the horizon longest; hence daylight is at its maximum. The noonday solar altitude is highest; hence the shadow of an upright pole is shortest.

It is worth noting that "the shadow at its shortest" (Summer Solstice) and "the shadow at its longest" (Winter Solstice) are the two extreme points of gnomon measurement, perfectly symmetrical. It was through the reciprocal stretching and shrinking of the shadow between these two extremes that the ancestors grasped the entire rhythm of the sun's north-south migration. That expanding and contracting shadow upon the gnomon was the most straightforward writing the Way of Heaven inscribed upon the earth.

III. "Daylight Long, the Star Huo": Fixing Midsummer by the Constellations

Besides gnomon measurement, the ancestors also verified the Summer Solstice by observing the stars.

The Book of Documents ("Canon of Yao") records the four mid-season marker stars: "At the equinox, the star Niao, thereby fixing mid-spring." "At the day's longest, the star Huo, thereby fixing midsummer." "At the equal night, the star Xu, thereby fixing mid-autumn." "At the day's shortest, the star Mao, thereby fixing midwinter." The sentence "At the day's longest, the star Huo, thereby fixing midsummer" is precisely the astronomical record pertaining to the Summer Solstice.

"The day at its longest" (ri yong, 日永) refers directly to the Summer Solstice. "The star Huo" (火) refers to the star visible at the meridian in the southern sky at dusk — Antares, also known as the Great Fire Star (Dahuo xing, 大火星; Alpha Scorpii). The sentence means: when daylight reaches its maximum and Antares stands at the southern meridian at dusk, one can thereby calibrate the timing of midsummer (the Summer Solstice).

Antares held an exalted position in pre-Qin astronomy. The Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan, Duke Xiang, Year 9) records: "The Fire Keeper Ebo of the Tao-Tang clan dwelt at Shangqiu and sacrificed to the Great Fire." In remote antiquity, there was an official called the "Fire Keeper" whose sole duty was to observe the rising and setting of Antares to regulate agricultural timing. Antares appears in the east in spring, reaches its highest point in the southern sky around the Summer Solstice, descends westward in autumn, and disappears in winter. Its cycle of rising and falling aligns precisely with the alternation of the four seasons, making it one of the ancestors' most important "celestial clocks."

Why was the Summer Solstice marked by the star Huo (Fire)$19 This was no coincidence. In the Five Phases (wuxing) system, summer pertains to fire, its cardinal direction is south, its color is red. Antares happens to be a brilliant red star that hangs high in the southern sky around the Summer Solstice — the red fire star in the heavens, the fire-virtue of the southern direction, and the scorching climate of summer formed, in the ancestors' understanding, a perfect triad of correspondence. This "unity of Heaven, Earth, and Season" is the core logic of the Chinese cosmological vision. When we gaze at Antares glowing red in the southern sky on a Summer Solstice night, it is as if we behold the incarnation of "fire virtue" in the firmament.

IV. The Summer and Winter Solstices: Two Extremes on the Gnomon

Let us return once more to the gnomon, viewing the Summer and Winter Solstices side by side to appreciate their symmetrical elegance.

On the Winter Solstice, the noonday sun is lowest and the shadow longest; on the Summer Solstice, the noonday sun is highest and the shadow shortest. Long and short, they form the two limits of gnomon measurement. Throughout the year, the shadow oscillates between these two extremes — from the Winter Solstice maximum, shortening day by day, through the Spring Equinox to the Summer Solstice minimum; then from the Summer Solstice minimum, lengthening day by day, through the Autumn Equinox back to the Winter Solstice maximum. Thus it cycles, on and on.

The symmetry of these two extremes is the cornerstone of the entire calendrical system. The ancestors first established the Two Solstices — the two most easily observable extremes — then bisected the interval to obtain the Two Equinoxes (Spring and Autumn), then derived the Four Beginnings (of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter), and finally subdivided everything into the twenty-four solar terms. One may say that the magnificent edifice of the twenty-four solar terms was built upon the foundation of two shadow-extremes on the gnomon: Summer Solstice and Winter Solstice.

More profoundly still, these two extremes are not merely astronomical but philosophical. The point of shortest shadow (Summer Solstice) marks the extreme of yang; the point of longest shadow (Winter Solstice) marks the extreme of yin. From Summer Solstice to Winter Solstice, the shadow lengthens from short to long — yang wanes and yin waxes. From Winter Solstice to Summer Solstice, the shadow shortens from long to short — yin wanes and yang waxes. That expanding and contracting shadow upon the gnomon measures not only the sun's altitude but the mutual waxing and waning of yin and yang. The ancestors, gazing down at the gnomon's shadow, were as if gazing upon the very breathing of the heart of Heaven and Earth.
