What is a Feng Shui Luopan?
A Feng Shui Luopan (Luo Pan, 羅盤) is the core instrument of Chinese geomancy, used since the Tang–Song era. A magnetised needle floating in the central Heaven Pool fixes north, while dozens of concentric rings — the 24 Mountains, San Yuan dragons, 28 lunar mansions, Early- and Later-Heaven trigrams and the full 360° circle — let a practitioner read dragons, set facing, and assess mountains and water. It is the shared measuring tool of the San He, San Yuan and Xuan Kong schools.
This page is a digital Luopan workbench that runs in your browser: the dial is driven live by your phone’s gyroscope and magnetometer, so simply turning the device reads out the facing. Lock the facing and you can browse every school at once — Xuan Kong Flying Stars, Eight Mansions (Ba Zhai), San He three needles and the 64 Hexagram ring. A Survey mode even lets you drop a custom Tai Chi center onto a floor plan. No install is required, and an optional APK client gives the steadiest readings.
Frequently asked questions
Is a digital Feng Shui compass accurate?
The heading comes from your device’s magnetometer and gyroscope, so precision depends on your phone hardware and magnetic surroundings. Hold the phone flat, away from metal and magnets, and do a figure-8 calibration. For true-north readings, enable the True-North fix and enter your local magnetic declination. All mountain, trigram and Flying-Star derivations are deterministic, so once the heading is right the readings are exact.
How do I use this online Luopan?
Tap “Start Compass” to grant orientation access, then hold the phone level — the dial’s north (Zi) stays pointed at true north and the mountain under the top pointer is your facing. When the reading is steady, tap “Lock facing” and switch between the Flying Stars, Eight Mansions, Three Needles and 64 Gua panels.
Which Feng Shui schools and rings does it cover?
The dial carries the 24 Mountains, San Yuan dragons, Yin-Yang purity, Five Elements, Early- and Later-Heaven trigrams, 28 lunar mansions and a 360° ring. The analysis panels cover Xuan Kong Flying Stars (Periods 1–9), Eight Mansions fortune with personal Ming Gua matching, San He three needles (Earth / Human / Heaven) for assessing mountains and water, and the Early-Heaven 64-hexagram ring. Every ring can be toggled.
What are the True-North fix and magnetic declination?
The needle points to magnetic north, which differs from geographic true north by a “declination” that varies with location. Feng Shui facing is normally taken from true north. Enable the True-North fix and enter your local declination (east positive) to realign the dial; you can look the value up from your GPS coordinates.
Is it free, and do I need an app?
The web version is free and works instantly in English and Chinese. If you want the steadiest gyroscope readings or offline use, you can download the APK client — the core compass and all school charts are free.
How does Survey (Li Ji) mode work?
Switch to the Survey tab, load a floor plan or photo, and drag to set the Tai Chi center (the home’s center). The overlaid Luopan divides the palaces around that point; tap anywhere on the plan to read which mountain and trigram that area falls in — useful for interior layout reference.
