Master Xu Shen in the Shuowen Jiezi writes: "Shu means heat. It takes 'sun' (ri) as its signific element, with zhe as phonetic." This is a phonosemantic compound; the component "sun" indicates meaning, revealing a direct connection to the sun and sunlight. Yet merely saying "shu means heat" does not fully disclose the distinctive connotations of shu.
In classical Chinese, shu and re differ in subtle but important ways. Generally speaking, re is a broader concept referring to any state of high temperature, whereas shu specifically denotes the peculiar damp, stifling heat of summer. The ancients long recognized this distinction. Later scholars distinguished between shu and yu (燠) and between shu and re, arguing that "shu approximates the humid, steaming kind of heat, while re approximates the dry, baking kind." This distinction is critically important, for it directly relates to the Great Heat phenological phrase "the earth is moist and the heat sultry" (tu run ru shu) — the heat of Great Heat is precisely that damp, steaming, clammy swelter of shu, not the dry, scorching heat of re.
Why does shu take "sun" as its radical$9 Because the root of summer heat lies in the sun. The sun's light and warmth are the source of all shu-heat. Through the radical "sun," the ancients firmly tethered this climate condition to the sun itself — this is not an abstract concept of temperature but a phenomenon with a definite astronomical origin. When the sun's accumulated radiance reaches a certain threshold, the ground, the air, and all things are baked through; combined with the abundant moisture that evaporates in summer, the distinctive quality of shu takes form.

The answer is that the ancients' naming of natural phenomena was never arbitrary labeling but a precise grasp of essential characteristics. What shu captures is the quality of summer heat, not merely its quantity. Summer heat differs from the heat of a brazier or the heat of sunburn; it possesses a pervasive, steaming, all-penetrating quality. To create the character shu was to fix this distinctive "quality of heat" so that it became a concept that could be spoken of, recorded, and incorporated into the cosmic order.
II. Why "Great" Heat$12 The Gradation of Summer Swelter
Shu alone is not enough. What makes Great Heat "great" is precisely that word da (大, "great"). Why should summer heat be divided into greater and lesser$13 What exactly distinguishes Lesser Heat (Xiaoshu) from Great Heat$14
Master Wu Cheng in the Collected Explanations of the Seventy-Two Pentads of the Monthly Ordinances offers an admirably precise explanation. Regarding Lesser Heat he writes: "The sixth-month node. The Shuowen says: shu means heat. Within heat one may further distinguish great and small: at the beginning of the month it is small, at the middle of the month it is great; at present the hot energy is still small." As for Great Heat: "The weather at this time is far fiercer than at Lesser Heat, hence the name Great Heat" — the summer swelter is now far more intense than at Lesser Heat, and so it is called Great Heat.
Reading these two passages together, we see the ancients' exquisite precision. A single character, shu, could broadly cover the whole of midsummer's heat. But the ancients felt this was not precise enough, and so they "further distinguished great and small within heat" — subdividing degrees of intensity within the scorching season. At the beginning of the month (Lesser Heat) the hot energy is still small; at the middle of the month (Great Heat) it has reached "the utmost of hot energy."
This practice of "dividing into great and small" reflects the extraordinary refinement of the ancients' observation of celestial timing! They were not content with the rough judgment "summer is very hot," but pressed further: How hot exactly$15 Is the heat still gathering or has it peaked$16 Is its trend rising or falling$17 Precisely through this subdivision into Lesser Heat and Great Heat, the ancients traced the midsummer temperature curve with clarity — from the "approaching but not yet extreme heat" of Lesser Heat to the "heat extreme and exuberant" of Great Heat.
At a still deeper level, da ("great") here is not merely an intensifier; it carries profound philosophical weight. In pre-Qin thought, da was never simply equivalent to "very." Laozi (the Most High) wrote: "There was something formless yet complete, born before heaven and earth. … I do not know its name; I style it 'the Way'; forced to give it a name, I call it 'the Great'" (Daodejing, Chapter 25). "Great" is one of the aliases of the Way. "Great" signifies having reached a certain extreme, a certain fullness, a state beyond which nothing further can be added.
The "great" in Great Heat carries exactly this sense — it is the state in which summer heat has reached its extreme, its absolute apex. And in pre-Qin dialectical thinking, the moment anything reaches "greatness," reaches its extreme, it is on the verge of turning into its opposite. The Most High wrote: "The Great means passing away; passing away means going far; going far means returning" (Daodejing, Chapter 25). Greatness leads to passage, passage leads to distance, distance leads to return. The "great" in Great Heat is precisely the critical turning point on this chain of "great — passing — far — returning": when the heat reaches "great," it means it is about to "pass away," about to move toward autumn's coolness and winter's cold. This is the deepest philosophical cipher embedded in the name "Great Heat": the very name of supreme flourishing already conceals the seeds of decline.
III. "Great Heat" and "Great Cold": The Symmetry of the Year's Two Poles
Among the twenty-four solar terms, "Great Heat" has a distant counterpart — "Great Cold" (Dahan). One marks the hottest time of the year, the other the coldest; one falls in the sixth month, the other in the twelfth; one represents the extreme of Fire virtue, the other the extreme of Water virtue. This symmetry of naming is no accident.
Why did the ancients give the year's two extremes the same "Great" structure$18 Embedded here is a fundamental recognition of the way the cosmos operates: the Way of Heaven is cyclical, bipolar, and oscillates between its two poles. Within the year there is a pole where yang energy reaches its maximum (Great Heat) and a pole where yin energy reaches its maximum (Great Cold). These two poles are like two points on opposite sides of an immense ring, marking the two endpoints of heaven's circuit.
The Xici Zhuan (Appended Statements) of the Book of Changes declares: "One yin and one yang — this is called the Way." The Way is the alternating movement of yin and yang. Great Heat is the extreme of "yang," Great Cold the extreme of "yin." But the point of extremity is precisely the point of reversal. After Great Heat, yang energy — though still strong — wanes daily, while yin energy — though still faint — waxes daily; after Great Cold, yin energy — though still strong — wanes daily, while yang energy — though still faint — waxes daily. The two poles echo each other, composing a complete, ceaselessly generative cycle.
This symmetry also reminds us of a profound truth: extreme heat and extreme cold are structurally isomorphic. Both are "extremes," both are tipping points where reversal into the opposite becomes inevitable, both conceal the opportunity for transformation. To understand that within the depths of Great Cold yang energy is being born is to understand that within Great Heat yin energy is already latent; to understand "at the Winter Solstice, a single yang is born" is to understand "at the Summer Solstice, a single yin is born" — and Great Heat is precisely the moment after the Summer Solstice when that single yin has been gradually growing and is about to become unmistakable. Through the symmetric naming of Great Heat and Great Cold, the ancients embedded the wisdom of this cycle deep within the system of solar terms.
