Auspicious Snow Sealing the Earth: The Nascent Yang within Supreme Yin at the Major Snow Solar Term

This article offers a deep reading of Major Snow (Daxue) among the twenty-four solar terms, drawing upon pre-Qin Confucian and Daoist philosophy, etymological origins, astronomy, and phenology. It analyzes the etymology of 'da means flourishing — at this point snow flourishes,' examines the Hexagram of Return (Fu) with its 'single yang returning' in the zi month, and reveals the virtue of auspicious snow sealing and protecting nascent yang, along with the profound cosmology of 'supreme yin birthing yang — the heart of Heaven and Earth.'

Auspicious Snow Sealing the Earth: The Nascent Yang within Supreme Yin at the Major Snow Solar Term

Chapter Ten: Yin-Yang, the Five Phases, and Major Snow — Water Virtue at Its Zenith and Yang's Secret Sprouting

I. Water Virtue at Its Zenith: Major Snow's Five-Phase Nature

Major Snow belongs to water, and midwinter is the period when water virtue is at its deepest and most exemplary. This chapter will analyze Major Snow's five-phase content in depth, revealing the seemingly contradictory yet truly unified nature of "water virtue at its zenith" and "yang's secret sprouting."

What does water govern among the five phases$6 The "Great Plan" (Hong Fan) chapter of the Book of Documents says: "The five phases: first is water, second fire, third wood, fourth metal, fifth earth. Water is called 'moistening and descending.'" "Moistening" (run) is to nourish; "descending" (xia) is moving downward, dwelling below, sinking. Major Snow's snow is the supreme manifestation of water's "moistening and descending": it falls from the sky (descending), nourishes all things (moistening), and ultimately melts into water that percolates downward into the earth (moistening and descending).

II. "Water Is the Original Source of the Ten Thousand Things"

The Guanzi (Water and Earth) contains an extremely important statement: "What is water$7 The original source of the ten thousand things, the ancestral dwelling of all that lives."

This reveals the most profound aspect of Major Snow's water virtue: water, though at Major Snow it appears in its most yin, most cold, sealed-and-stored form, is in its essential nature "the original source of the ten thousand things" — the very wellspring of life!

This resolves an apparent paradox: why should the season of supremely yin water virtue be precisely the inception of yang qi and life's renewal$8 Because water is inherently life's source. Where does the single yang return to$9 It returns within water, within supreme yin, within the depths of this "original source of the ten thousand things." The more flourishing the water virtue, the deeper life's source, and the more firmly rooted and powerful the single yang that sprouts from it.

III. Yang's Secret Sprouting: The Mystery of Fire Within Water

Major Snow's water virtue is at its zenith, and a single yang sprouts secretly within it — this is the mystery of "fire within water."

In Chinese traditional cosmology and the understanding of the human body, there exists a profoundly significant concept: water contains fire; yin contains yang. In hexagram terms, the Return hexagram's "Earth over Thunder" — the great earth (Kun, supreme yin) containing thunder (Zhen, yang stirring) beneath it — is precisely a portrait of "fire (thunder) within water (earth)." In the human body, the kidneys belong to water, yet within the kidneys lies the "fire of the Gate of Destiny" (ming men zhi huo, the primordial yang). Major Snow: water virtue at its zenith (supreme yin), a single yang sprouting secretly (fire within water) — this is the great mechanism by which life preserves its spark within supreme yin and gestates new life.

IV. Five-Phase Generation: Metal Generates Water and the Transition from Autumn to Winter

From the perspective of five-phase generation, the water virtue in which Major Snow resides is generated by autumn's metal virtue — "metal generates water." Autumn's "gathering" (metal virtue) provides the precondition and foundation for winter's "storing" (water virtue). Major Snow stands at the stage after "metal generates water," when water virtue has reached its zenith.

V. Five-Phase Conquest and Transformation: The Yin-Yang Mystery Within Water Conquering Fire

From the perspective of five-phase conquest, water conquers fire. At Major Snow, with water virtue at its zenith, this is the extreme moment of water conquering fire, of yin suppressing yang — yang qi (fire) has been pressed and stored by the supremely powerful yin qi (water) into the very deepest place.

Yet precisely within this extreme of "water conquering fire" lies the deepest mystery of yin-yang transformation: the yang qi (fire) that has been suppressed and stored away has not been annihilated — it has been "stored." And "storing" is precisely for the sake of "returning." Yang qi pressed to the extreme is gathering force, preparing to complete its magnificent "return" at the winter solstice.

This is the transformative mystery concealed within five-phase conquest: conquest is not annihilation but the occasion for transformation. Water conquering fire to the extreme is precisely the overture to fire's (yang's) turning and returning. This corresponds exactly to the Book of Changes' dialectic of "when Splitting Apart reaches its extreme, Return necessarily follows" and "from Stagnation to Peace."
