Chapter Eleven: Major Snow and Agriculture — Storing, Repairing, and the Hope for Auspicious Snow

I. Agricultural Rest and "Winter Storing": The Rhythm of Farming at Major Snow

During Major Snow, agricultural activity enters its most tranquil phase of the year. In the north, the fields are frozen, the harvest stored in granaries, and overwintering wheat seedlings slumber beneath their blanket of snow. The year's labor and harvest have been largely completed, entering the stage of "storing."

The Book of Songs (Bin Feng, "Seventh Month") vividly portrays the agricultural tasks of the full year; by year's end in deep winter: "In the ninth month, frost descends; in the tenth month, the threshing floor is swept clean. With paired vessels of wine we feast; we slaughter the lambs. We climb to the public hall, raise the rhinoceros-horn goblet: may you live ten thousand years!"

What a warm, moving scene of year-end agricultural rest! A year of toil is done; all has been stored away; in this season of "winter storing," people rest, feast, and offer prayers. Agricultural rest is not idle waste but rest in accordance with the virtue of "winter storing" — bodily and spiritual nourishment for the coming year's labors.

II. Repair and Accumulation: Readiness Within Storage

Though Major Snow brings agricultural rest, it is by no means a time of complete inactivity. The ancients had much to do during this season of "storage" — maintenance, accumulation, and organization in preparation for the coming year.

While the Monthly Ordinances strictly forbid "earthworks" and "opening rooms and houses" (to prevent leaking the earth's qi), everyday mending, interior organization, the repair of farming implements, the selection and preservation of next year's seeds, and the stockpiling of winter provisions were all proper tasks for Major Snow. This is the wisdom of "readiness within storage": outwardly one rests and stores; inwardly one quietly prepares for the year ahead.

III. "Timely Snow Portends a Bountiful Year": The Farmer's Longing at Major Snow

For the farmer, the greatest hope during Major Snow was a grand, timely snowfall. Folk sayings such as "If Major Snow doesn't freeze, there'll be cold in late spring" and "Major Snow portends a bountiful year; without snow, watch the sky" all reflect the farmer's keen attention to and earnest longing for snowfall at Major Snow.

IV. "Do Not Violate the Agricultural Seasons": Agricultural Statecraft in Major Snow's Stored Nourishment

Master Meng (Mengzi) said: "Do not violate the agricultural seasons, and grain will be more than can be eaten" (Mencius, "King Hui of Liang, Part I"). This wisdom of "not violating the agricultural seasons" manifests during Major Snow as according with the virtue of "winter storing."

"Not violating the agricultural seasons" means not only that spring plowing, summer weeding, and autumn harvesting must follow Heaven's timing, but also that winter's "storing" must follow it. During Major Snow, the Way of Heaven requires "storing." To accord with this — letting the earth rest, the farmer recuperate, the crops overwinter safely beneath their blanket of snow — is the expression of "not violating the agricultural seasons" in winter.
