Auspicious Snow Sealing the Earth: The Nascent Yang within Supreme Yin at the Major Snow Solar Term

This article offers a deep reading of Major Snow (Daxue) among the twenty-four solar terms, drawing upon pre-Qin Confucian and Daoist philosophy, etymological origins, astronomy, and phenology. It analyzes the etymology of 'da means flourishing — at this point snow flourishes,' examines the Hexagram of Return (Fu) with its 'single yang returning' in the zi month, and reveals the virtue of auspicious snow sealing and protecting nascent yang, along with the profound cosmology of 'supreme yin birthing yang — the heart of Heaven and Earth.'

Auspicious Snow Sealing the Earth: The Nascent Yang within Supreme Yin at the Major Snow Solar Term

Chapter Sixteen: Pressing the Question of "Why": Philosophical Puzzles of Major Snow

I. Why Can Yang Sprout Within Supreme Yin$15

We have repeatedly addressed "yang sprouting within supreme yin" as Major Snow's deepest mystery. But at the philosophical level, we must press the question more thoroughly: why, ultimately, can yang sprout within supreme yin$16 Does this not defy common sense$17

On the surface, yin and yang are opposed — when yin flourishes, yang should wane; at yin's extreme, yang should seemingly be extinguished. Why does yang instead come to life at yin's extreme$18

The ancients' answer rests upon the profound dialectic of "yin and yang are mutually rooted" and "when things reach their extreme, they reverse." First, yin and yang are mutually rooted — they are not two absolutely opposed entities but interdependent, mutually containing, mutually foundational. There is no pure yin, no pure yang; yin necessarily contains yang ("bearing yin, embracing yang"), yang necessarily contains yin. Thus, even at the moment of yin's greatest intensity, that inherent thread of yang has never been extinguished — it has merely withdrawn to the deepest place. Second, when things reach their extreme, they reverse — this is the fundamental mode of the Way's operation ("reversal is the movement of the Way"). When yin develops to its extreme, its momentum is spent; it can advance no further and must inevitably recede, whereupon yang qi seizes the turning point and sprouts.

At a still deeper level, "yang sprouting within supreme yin" reveals the fundamental mechanism by which the universe sustains its ceaseless creativity. If, after yin's extreme, yang were extinguished (pure yin with no turning point), the universe would lapse into permanent death and nothing would ever be reborn. Only through the endless cycle of yang emerging at yin's extreme and yin emerging at yang's extreme can the universe be ceaselessly creative and all things perpetually renewed.

II. Why Can Snow Become "Auspicious"$19

At the most fundamental level: why can a supremely yin, supremely cold, seemingly destructive phenomenon (snow) become "auspicious" (a portent of fortune, a blessing)$20

The answer lies in the ancients' profound dialectical understanding of "yin" and "cold." In their deep wisdom, yin and cold were not purely negative but an indispensable and critically important link in the cycle of life. Snow's auspiciousness resides precisely in its achieving the great merit of "storing" and "nourishing" through supreme yin and supreme cold: it insulates and protects life through winter (supreme yin protecting vitality), melts to nourish the fields (supremely yin water sustaining all things), and destroys pests by freezing (cold removing harm and clearing the way for life). Snow's every blessing is a case of "achieving yang through yin," "nourishing life through cold," "fostering growth through storage."

III. Why Is "Storing" So Important$21

The ancients' answer is emphatic: storing is by no means passive suspension; it is the most critical, most fundamental link in the cycle of life. Without storing, there can be no life; without winter storing, there can be no spring birth.

Why$22 Because life's energy is finite and requires nourishment. Spring engenders, summer grows, autumn gathers — this is a process of continuous expenditure. Without winter storing to contract, nourish, and replenish, life's energy would be exhausted by ceaseless outlay. Storing is for the sake of better growth in the coming year; closure is for the sake of better opening in the coming spring.

At a deeper level, "storing" embodies a profound rhythm of life — tension and relaxation in due measure, motion and stillness complementing each other. Heaven and Earth do not grow forever (that would lead to exhaustion), nor do they store forever (that would lead to death). Only through the recurring cycle of birth — growth — gathering — storing, with tension and relaxation in due measure, can life be endlessly renewed.

IV. Why Are Major Snow's Three Pentads "The Winter-Lamenting Bird Ceases to Cry, Tigers Begin to Mate, Lychee Grass Pushes Forth" and Not Something Else$23

This selection is far from arbitrary; it reflects the ancients' exquisite grasp of Major Snow's core characteristic: "yin's extreme and yang's birth."

First, these three pentads compose the complete logic of "yin's extreme to yang's sprouting." Second, they encompass three domains of life — bird, beast, and plant — providing broad representativeness. Third, each pentad possesses striking symbolic tension and philosophical depth: the hedan's "sensing yin's extreme and falling silent" symbolizes the wisdom of knowing the season and holding still; the tiger's "sensing faint yang and beginning to mate" symbolizes the most yang beast's keenest perception of nascent yang; the lychee grass's "sensing yang qi and pushing forth" symbolizes the most tenacious vitality within supreme yin.

V. Why Must Major Snow and the Winter Solstice "Divide the Labor"$24

Finally, we must ask a structural question: why did the ancients distribute the theme of "a single yang returning" across two solar terms, giving Major Snow and the winter solstice their "division of labor"$25

This division embodies the ancients' profound respect for the "processual nature" of the Way of Heaven's operations. "A single yang returning" is not an isolated event completed abruptly on the day of the winter solstice but a process with harbingers, gestation, and establishment. Major Snow is the stage of "harbingers" and "gestation"; the winter solstice is the stage of "establishment" and "completion." Distributing "a single yang returning" across the two terms precisely presents the complete "process" of this great turning — from gestation (Major Snow) to establishment (winter solstice). This is the ultimate expression of the spirit of "reverently bestowing the seasons" — extending precise respect and marking to every subtle link, every transitional stage of the Way of Heaven.
