Auspicious Snow Sealing the Earth: The Nascent Yang within Supreme Yin at the Major Snow Solar Term

This article offers a deep reading of Major Snow (Daxue) among the twenty-four solar terms, drawing upon pre-Qin Confucian and Daoist philosophy, etymological origins, astronomy, and phenology. It analyzes the etymology of 'da means flourishing — at this point snow flourishes,' examines the Hexagram of Return (Fu) with its 'single yang returning' in the zi month, and reveals the virtue of auspicious snow sealing and protecting nascent yang, along with the profound cosmology of 'supreme yin birthing yang — the heart of Heaven and Earth.'

Auspicious Snow Sealing the Earth: The Nascent Yang within Supreme Yin at the Major Snow Solar Term

Chapter Six: The Return Hexagram of the Book of Changes and the Single Yang's Return — The Revelation of Heaven and Earth's Heart

I. The Return Hexagram: The Governing Hexagram of the Zi Month in Which Major Snow Falls

If there is one hexagram that best represents the zi month of Major Snow, it is the Return hexagram (Fu, ䷗). This chapter will be devoted entirely to the Return hexagram, revealing the great philosophy of "a single yang returning" and clarifying the resonance and division of labor between Major Snow and the winter solstice within this hexagram image.

In the system of twelve sovereign hexagrams (xiao xi gua), twelve hexagrams correspond to twelve months, displaying the waxing and waning of yin and yang over the year. Let us set out the complete sequence:

Eleventh month: Return (one yang born at the bottom). Twelfth month: Approach (two yangs growing). First month: Peace (three yangs — "triple yang opens the season of peace"). Second month: Great Vigor (four yangs thriving). Third month: Breakthrough (five yangs dispelling yin). Fourth month: Qian/Heaven (six yangs — pure yang). — Thereafter, yin qi begins to grow — Fifth month: Encounter (one yin born). Sixth month: Withdrawal (two yins growing). Seventh month: Stagnation (three yins). Eighth month: Contemplation (four yins prevailing). Ninth month: Splitting Apart (five yins stripping yang). Tenth month: Kun/Earth (six yins — pure yin).

Note the turning point in this sequence: at the tenth month's Kun hexagram, all six lines are yin — pure yin without yang, the annual extreme of yin qi. Immediately following, the eleventh month's Return hexagram produces a single yang beneath five yin lines. From Kun's "pure yin" to Return's "a single yang returning" — this is the great pivot of yin reaching its extreme and yang being reborn. And Major Snow stands within this pivot — it falls in the zi month, the very month governed by the Return hexagram.

The image of the Return hexagram (䷗) is: the lower trigram is Zhen (Thunder — a single yang at the bottom, symbolizing thunder and motion), the upper trigram is Kun (Earth — symbolizing receptivity). Together: "Earth over Thunder — Return." Beneath the great earth, thunder stirs. Thunder is yang qi, vitality, initiation; at this moment it still lies deeply hidden beneath the earth, not yet emerged (it will emerge in spring at the Awakening of Insects), but it has already begun to stir. This is the precise portrait of the Major Snow season: yang qi (thunder) has been born but remains deeply stored beneath the supremely yin earth, gathering force.

II. "In Return, One May Perceive the Heart of Heaven and Earth": The Fundamental Mind of the Cosmos

The Tuan (Judgment) commentary on the Return hexagram contains a statement of earth-shaking profundity:

"In Return, one may perceive the heart of Heaven and Earth!"

Why is it the Return hexagram — rather than the vibrant Peace hexagram or the yang-resplendent Qian hexagram — that most reveals "the heart of Heaven and Earth"$38

The answer lies precisely in the Return hexagram's special position: it is the hexagram in which, at the uttermost extreme of yin, amid universal desolation and seeming total silence, a single thread of yang qi is reborn. Consider: after the pure yin of the Kun hexagram, Heaven and Earth seem to have sunk into complete stillness, vitality seems to have been utterly extinguished. Yet at this moment, a single yang quietly returns — what does this signify$39 It signifies that Heaven and Earth's creative impulse has never truly been extinguished; it signifies that no matter how deep and oppressive the yin-cold, it cannot snuff out that single spark of ceaseless life.

This is the meaning of "the heart of Heaven and Earth." The heart of Heaven and Earth is the fundamental will, the deep-structure nature of Heaven and Earth, that ceaselessly and tirelessly creates life. And this heart is revealed most clearly, most movingly, precisely at the moment when all things seem dead and still — because it is at this moment that life, in its most feeble yet most resolute way, proclaims its own inextinguishability. A single yang returns — this is Heaven and Earth's heart declaring to the world: I am still here; life is still here; hope is still here.

III. "Returning and Reversing Along Its Way, the Yang Returns in Seven Days — This Is the Course of Heaven"

The Tuan commentary continues:

"Returning and reversing along its way, the yang returns in seven days — this is the course of Heaven."

"Returning and reversing along its way" — the Way's movement is cyclical. Yang qi grows from birth to maturity, from maturity to decline, from decline to exhaustion, and then from exhaustion back to rebirth. This "returning and reversing" is precisely what the Most High (Laozi) meant by "reversal is the movement of the Way" (fan zhe dao zhi dong): returning and cycling constitute the fundamental mode of the Way's motion.

"The yang returns in seven days" — from the perspective of the hexagram system, yang qi first produces a single yin in the fifth month's Encounter hexagram, then passes through six months of yin's growth to its extreme (Kun), and in the seventh month (Return) yang qi returns anew. Using "days" in place of "months," this becomes "seven days to return." The number seven symbolizes the period of one complete cycle — after seven stages, things inevitably return to their starting point and begin again.

"This is the course of Heaven" — this is the operating law of the celestial Way, independent of human will. The single yang's return is not anyone's beneficence, not a stroke of luck, but the inevitable consequence of the Way's operation. The solstice must come, yang qi must return, just as spring must inevitably arrive — this is the constancy of Heaven's course, the most reliable promise in the universe.

IV. The Great Image of the Return Hexagram: "The Former Kings Closed the Passes on the Solstice Day"

The Da Xiang (Great Image) commentary on the Return hexagram says:

"Thunder within the earth — this is Return. The former kings therefore closed the passes on the solstice day: merchants and travelers did not journey forth, and the ruler did not inspect the quarters."

Thunder (yang qi) has been reborn but still lies deeply hidden within the earth, exceedingly feeble, requiring careful nurture — it must not be disturbed. Therefore the former kings closed the passes on the winter solstice: commerce and travel ceased, the ruler stopped all inspection tours. All activity halted, all disturbance stilled — for what purpose$40 To avoid startling that newly born single yang, to let it grow and stabilize in absolute tranquility.

This is the ritualization of Major Snow's spirit of sealed storage. It is perfectly consistent with the Monthly Ordinances' midwinter dictum "secure everything and keep it closed" and "this month is called the month of fullness." The newly born yang, supremely tender, must be nurtured through "closure," "stillness," and "storage." The lesson is profound: any newborn, newly sprouting force — whether a single yang qi, a new good intention, or a new enterprise — in its most fragile initial stage requires the guardianship of silence and "closing the passes," not the turbulence of display and bustle.

V. Major Snow and the Winter Solstice: Resonance and Division of Labor

We can now clearly delineate the resonance and division of labor between Major Snow and the winter solstice within the theme of "a single yang returning."

The winter solstice is the mid-term of the zi month, the precise moment when the sun reaches ecliptic longitude 270 degrees, the day of the year's shortest daylight and longest night, the day of yin's ultimate extreme and yang's confirmed return. The solstice emphasizes "the establishment of a single yang's return."

Major Snow is the solar term immediately before the winter solstice, when the sun reaches 255 degrees. Major Snow emphasizes "the omen of yang about to sprout within the sealing of flourishing snow" — it is the overture and preparation for a single yang's return.

To use an analogy: if a single yang's return is a magnificent sunrise, then the winter solstice is the moment the sun leaps above the horizon, while Major Snow is, in the deepest darkness before dawn, that first faint glow along the eastern sky. The solstice is the establishment of "return"; Major Snow is the harbinger of "return." Together, in sequence, one foreshadowing and one confirming, they compose the complete movement of the greatest turning point between Heaven and Earth.
