Full Yet Not Overflowing: The Wisdom of Waxing, Waning, and Humility in the Xiaoman Solar Term
This article offers an in-depth interpretation of Xiaoman (Grain Full), one of the twenty-four solar terms, drawing on pre-Qin Confucian and Daoist philosophy, philology, astronomy, and phenology. Through the etymology of "full yet not overflowing," and the phenological signs of bitter herbs flourishing and wheat's autumn arriving, it reveals the deep meaning behind why the twenty-four solar terms include a "small fullness" (Xiaoman) but no "great fullness"—illuminating the ancient Chinese wisdom of guarding against excess, prizing humility, of loss following fullness and gain following modesty, of completeness found even in imperfection, and the venerable cosmology of the unity of Heaven and humanity.

Chapter 2 · The Astronomical Basis of Xiaoman: The Sun Reaching Sixty Degrees of Ecliptic Longitude
I. Sixty Degrees of Ecliptic Longitude: Xiaoman's Coordinate in the Sky
How did our ancestors determine the precise moment of Xiaoman$20 This question leads us into the very heart of ancient Chinese astronomy.
In today's astronomical terms, Xiaoman is the moment when the sun reaches sixty degrees of ecliptic longitude. "Ecliptic longitude" (黄经) is a coordinate that measures the sun's apparent position along the ecliptic, taking the vernal equinox point as its origin. When the sun reaches zero degrees of ecliptic longitude, it is the Spring Equinox; at fifteen degrees, Qingming; at thirty degrees, Guyu (Grain Rain); at forty-five degrees, Lixia (the Beginning of Summer); and at sixty degrees, Xiaoman. Every fifteen degrees marks another solar term, and the twenty-four solar terms divide the 360-degree circle of the ecliptic into equal parts.
What does this position of "sixty degrees" signify$21 It means that Xiaoman falls exactly two-thirds of the way between the Spring Equinox (zero degrees) and the Summer Solstice (ninety degrees)—already far removed from the equinox's balance of day and night, and rapidly approaching the solstice's longest day. In other words, by Xiaoman, the sun's position in the sky is already quite high, the days are already quite long, the yang qi already quite abundant—yet it has not yet reached that highest, longest, most abundant "extreme."
Note how precisely this astronomical state of "approaching the extreme but not yet there" resonates with the literal meaning of the two characters Xiaoman—"a small attainment of fullness, not yet great fullness"! The sun reaching sixty degrees of ecliptic longitude is precisely the astronomical portrait of yang qi having achieved "a small fullness"—it is abundant, but has not yet scaled the summit; it is vigorous, but leaves room for more. The sun in the sky above and the wheat ears in the fields below follow one and the same rhythm of "approaching fullness but not yet full." This is by no means coincidence, but a necessary consequence of our ancestors' cosmology of "the unity of Heaven and humanity"—the rhythm of waxing and waning in the Dao of Heaven runs through the sun, moon, and stars, and likewise runs through the grasses, trees, and grain.
II. Measuring Shadows with the Gnomon and Sundial: The Wisdom of a Shadow "Approaching Its Shortest but Not Yet There"
Of course, the ancients of the pre-Qin era did not use a concept such as "sixty degrees of ecliptic longitude." Their oldest method for determining Xiaoman was to observe the sun's shadow.
The Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), in the chapter "Da Situ" of the "Offices of Earth," records: "By the method of the jade gnomon, measure the depth of the earth, rectify the sun's shadow, and thereby seek the center of the earth" (以土圭之法测土深,正日景,以求地中). The gnomon-and-sundial (guibiao) is China's most ancient astronomical instrument—an upright vertical post (biao) paired with a horizontal ruled tablet (gui); by measuring the length of the post's shadow at noon, one could infer the sun's elevation and track the succession of the solar terms.
At the Summer Solstice, the noon shadow is shortest, because the sun's position is highest; at the Winter Solstice, the noon shadow is longest, because the sun's position is lowest. At Xiaoman, the length of the noon shadow falls between that of Lixia and the Summer Solstice—shorter than at Lixia, but longer than at the Summer Solstice. In other words, by Xiaoman, the shadow has already shortened to a degree close to the shortest of the year, yet has not yet reached that shortest extreme.
Here again we encounter that familiar theme—"approaching its shortest but not yet there." The shadow at Xiaoman represents the second stage of "shortness" within the year, only a step away from the "utmost shortness" of the Summer Solstice. As our ancestors observed this daily shortening shadow, not yet at its shortest extreme, they knew: the yang qi is now vigorous but not yet at its utmost, all things are now full but not yet overflowing—this is the time of "small fullness."
It is worth pondering deeply why our ancestors chose to establish a dedicated solar term precisely at the moment when the shadow is "approaching its shortest but not yet there." Why not simply wait for the Summer Solstice, when the shadow is shortest$22 Hidden here, in fact, is our ancestors' special regard for "process" rather than "extremity." The Summer Solstice is an extreme point, a turning point, the threshold at which yang qi turns from flourishing to declining; Xiaoman, by contrast, is an unhurried pause within the ascending process—here, everything is still moving toward the good, still filling up, not yet pressing against that limit at which it must "turn back" (反). That our ancestors named this unhurried moment of "still rising but not yet at the peak" reflects, precisely, their special fondness for the state of "not yet full."
III. Culmination Stars at Dusk and Dawn: The Ancestors' Method of Observing the Heavens
Besides the sun's shadow, our ancestors also determined the solar terms by observing which constellations culminated—reached the southern meridian—at dusk and at dawn.
The "Canon of Yao" in the Book of Documents records the marker culmination-stars of the four mid-seasons: "At mid-day, the Bird star culminates, to fix mid-spring" (日中星鸟,以殷仲春); "The day being longest, the Fire star culminates, to rectify mid-summer" (日永星火,以正仲夏); "At mid-night, the Emptiness star culminates, to fix mid-autumn" (宵中星虚,以殷仲秋); "The day being shortest, the Mane star culminates, to rectify mid-winter" (日短星昴,以正仲冬). Of these, "the day being longest, the Fire star culminates, to rectify mid-summer" tells us that, around the time of the Summer Solstice, the marker constellation culminating at dusk in the southern sky is "Great Fire" (大火, the star Antares).
Xiaoman falls right after Lixia and before Mangzhong, in the very midst of the approach toward mid-summer (the Summer Solstice). At dusk during this period, the star Antares has already risen to a considerable height in the sky—but has not yet reached the position of culmination it will attain at mid-summer. "Antares approaching culmination but not yet there" is, once again, a celestial phenomenon of "approaching but not yet arriving."
Why was the movement of the star Antares so important$23 The Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), in the ninth year of Duke Xiang, records: "The Fire Minister of the Taotang clan, E Bo, dwelt at Shangqiu, where he offered sacrifice to Great Fire" (陶唐氏之火正阏伯居商丘,祀大火). In high antiquity, there was an office called "Fire Minister" (火正), dedicated specifically to observing the star Antares. Antares appears in the east in spring, culminates at mid-heaven in summer, sinks in the west in autumn, and hides beneath the earth in winter; its cycle of rising and setting corresponds precisely to the succession of the four seasons. And at the time of Xiaoman, Antares is "approaching culmination"—precisely the celestial sign of yang qi "approaching its utmost." Our ancestors looked up to observe the height of Antares, and looked down to examine the grain-filling of the wheat ears; the two corroborated each other, confirming with certainty that "Xiaoman" had arrived. This dual method of verification—"observing the heavens above, examining phenological signs below"—embodies the plain yet rigorous empirical spirit of our ancestors' astronomy.
IV. Beyond the "Four Beginnings, Two Equinoxes, and Two Solstices": Why Was a Term Like "Fullness" Still Needed$24
In the earliest system of solar terms, there were only the "two equinoxes and two solstices" (二分二至)—the Spring Equinox, Autumn Equinox, Summer Solstice, and Winter Solstice. Later, the "four beginnings" (四立) were added—Lichun (Beginning of Spring), Lixia (Beginning of Summer), Liqiu (Beginning of Autumn), and Lidong (Beginning of Winter)—together forming the eight nodal points of the "four beginnings, two equinoxes, and two solstices." Each of these eight solar terms corresponds to a clear astronomical extremum or turning point: the equinoxes mark the balance of day and night; the solstices mark the longest and shortest shadows; the "beginnings" mark the inception of each season.
But Xiaoman is neither an equinox, nor a solstice, nor a "beginning." It corresponds to no astronomical extremum; it is merely a point on the ecliptic—sixty degrees—that neither rises nor falls, neither leans one way nor the other. Why did our ancestors establish a dedicated solar term at such an unremarkable astronomical position, and give it a name as suggestive as "Xiaoman"$25
The answer lies here: as agriculture grew more refined, the eight nodal points alone no longer sufficed. Our ancestors needed a finer scale of time to arrange their farming activities, and so they further subdivided the eight nodes into the twenty-four solar terms. In the course of this subdivision, each newly added term was given a name that most closely matched the phenological signs and farming activities of that period. And the period corresponding to sixty degrees of ecliptic longitude happened to align precisely with the critical moment when the kernels of summer-ripening crops "first begin to fill"—and so it came to be named "Xiaoman."
This act of naming reveals something profound: in the eyes of our ancestors, the name of a solar term was never an arbitrary label, but a precise distillation of the "true state of affairs" between Heaven and Earth during that period. The two characters "Xiaoman" are the poetic crystallization of the phenological reality that "the wheat kernels are filling with grain, just beginning to show plumpness." And in choosing "Xiaoman"—rather than any other term—to name this period, our ancestors simultaneously infused this name with the entire civilization's attitude toward "fullness": to esteem its "small" measure and to guard against its "great" extreme. Astronomy provides the skeleton, phenology the flesh and blood, and philosophy is the soul that suffuses them both.
