Grain and Fire as Autumn: The Severance of Heaven and Earth and the Onset of Solemn Killing at Liqiu

This article offers an in-depth interpretation of Liqiu (Start of Autumn) among the Twenty-Four Solar Terms, drawing on pre-Qin Confucian and Daoist philosophy, the original meanings of Chinese characters, and astronomical-phenological perspectives. By examining the etymological roots of 'qiu' (autumn) as grain-and-fire, the astronomical coordinate of 135° solar longitude, and the image of Hexagram Pi (Standstill) from the Yijing — 'Heaven and Earth do not interact' — it reveals Liqiu as the pivotal moment when all things shift from 'growth' to 'gathering,' illuminating the virtue of Metal, the onset of solemn killing, and the ancient roots of the autumnal grief tradition.

Grain and Fire as Autumn: The Severance of Heaven and Earth and the Onset of Solemn Killing at Liqiu

Chapter Eight: Liqiu's Phenological World — How Do All Things "Know" Autumn Has Come$4

I. Overview of the Three Pentads: Cool Winds Arrive, White Dew Descends, Autumn Cicadas Sing

The ancients divided each solar term into three pentads (hou), each five days long, using specific phenological phenomena as markers. The Yi Zhoushu ("Lost Book of Zhou"), "Shixun jie" ("Explanations of Seasonal Training"), records Liqiu's three pentads: "On the day of Liqiu, cool winds arrive. Five days later, white dew descends. Five more days, and autumn cicadas sing."

These three pentads form a progressively deepening portrait of autumn's initial arrival, advancing through the senses: the first pentad appeals to touch (the coolness of wind), the second to sight (the condensation of dew), the third to hearing (the mournful cry of cicadas).

II. First Pentad — Cool Winds Arrive: The Herald of Solemn Killing

"Cool winds arrive" — Liqiu's first sign is the coming of a "cool wind." Wind is the most sensitive, most anticipatory messenger of the vital mechanism. While heat still steams and the sun still blazes, the wind's "quality" can convey the earliest news of heaven and earth's qi turning direction.

At a deeper level, the ancients had precise understanding of the "cool wind's" direction — the autumn wind, the west wind, corresponds to western Metal. The cool wind of Liqiu was understood as a brisk wind from the west or southwest — carrying Metal's clarity and severity, dispersing summer's oppressive heat, announcing the advent of the season of convergence.

III. Second Pentad — White Dew Descends: The Sign of Metal Qi Condensing

"White dew descends" — Liqiu's second sign is the condensation of "white dew."

Why "white" dew$5 Dew is colorless, so why call it "white"$6 On one hand, "white" describes the crystalline, lustrous, white-gleaming appearance of dewdrops in morning light. On the other, it reflects the Five Phases association — autumn belongs to Metal, and Metal's color is white. The dew that condenses after Liqiu is called "white dew" because it is the product of autumn Metal's qi condensing. The whiteness of dew is the manifestation of Metal virtue's whiteness in the natural world.

The formation of dew — nighttime temperature drops causing water vapor to condense — is direct evidence of yin qi's ascendance and yang qi's retreat. Though daytime remains hot, nighttime yin-cool qi has grown strong enough to condense invisible vapor into visible droplets. This is irrefutable physical proof of the yin-yang balance shifting.

IV. Third Pentad — Autumn Cicadas Sing: The Autumnal Dirge of Life

"Autumn cicadas sing" — Liqiu's third sign is the singing of "cold cicadas" (hanchan). This is the most emotionally charged, most tragic of the three pentads.

The cold cicada is a species that sings in autumn, distinct from the boisterous summer cicada. Its cry is mournful, brief, and intermittent — carrying the sadness of a life nearing its end. Summer cicadas' singing is life's exuberant hymn; cold cicadas' singing is life's farewell dirge.

Why is the cold cicada's cry listed as a pentad of Liqiu$7 Because the cicada's life is the most poignant epitome of the cosmic rhythm from summer growth to autumn gathering. Cicadas burrow underground for years, then emerge in high summer to shed their shells, climb high, and sing at full voice, pouring forth their life; by Liqiu, as autumn qi rises and cold gathers, their life reaches its end. The cold cicada's cry is its final song before death — a mournful, broken sound that seems to grieve for the brief summer past.

Thereafter, "cold cicadas singing" became the representative sound of autumn and an important image of the "autumn grief" (beiqiu) tradition. Luo Binwang's "Ode to the Cicada from Prison" — "Dew weighs heavy, hard to fly; wind is strong, the song fades fast" — and Liu Yong's "Rain Bells" — "Cold cicadas, mournful and sharp, facing the long pavilion at dusk" — all transformed cold cicadas' singing into classic symbols of autumn sorrow and parting.

V. The Inner Logic of the Three Pentads: From Wind to Dew to Sound

Reviewing Liqiu's three pentads — cool winds arrive, white dew descends, autumn cicadas sing — we find a rigorous inner logic of step-by-step deepening in autumn qi's descent.

The first pentad, "cool winds arrive," is the "herald" of autumn's initial presence — the faintest, most anticipatory signal. The second pentad, "white dew descends," is the "materialization" of autumn qi's advance — from the formless "coolness of wind" to the tangible "whiteness of dew." The third pentad, "autumn cicadas sing," is the "resonance" of autumn qi touching life — autumn's solemn killing has penetrated from the realm of natural phenomena into that of living beings.

From "coolness of wind" to "whiteness of dew" to "song of cicada" — these three pentads chart the complete progression of autumn Metal's solemn qi from faint to manifest, from matter to life.
