Feng Shui Luopan
Point, lock, read: Flying Stars, Eight Mansions, annual afflictions and floor plans
What is a Feng Shui Luopan?
A Feng Shui Luopan is the core instrument of Chinese geomancy. A needle in the central Heaven Pool fixes north, while concentric rings — the 24 Mountains, San Yuan dragons, Early and Later Heaven trigrams, 64 hexagrams, 120 Fenjin, 28 lunar mansions and the 360° circle — are used to set the facing and read mountains and water.
This page is a digital Luopan in your browser, driven by your phone’s magnetometer. Point it at the door and press Lock: you get Xuan Kong Flying Stars (with replacement charts, city gates and special formations), Eight Mansions with your Ming Gua, the three needles, hexagram and Fenjin, plus this year’s and month’s afflicted directions. Floor-plan mode splits your plan into palaces and reads each room; Map mode sets the facing on satellite imagery.
Frequently asked questions
Is a digital Feng Shui compass accurate?
Headings come from the phone magnetometer and are affected by steel and appliances. Hold the phone flat away from metal, calibrate with a figure-8, compare several spots with Multi-point check, correct with Sun calibration, or set the facing on the satellite map. Once the heading is right, every derived chart is exact.
How do I use it?
Tap “Use phone compass”, hold the phone flat with its top edge pointing out of the front door, and press Lock when the reading is steady. On a desktop, drag the dial or the heading tape, or type the degrees.
Magnetic or true north?
Traditional Feng Shui reads the facing from magnetic north, which is the default here. Switch to true north to compare with maps; the local declination is computed from your location with the WMM model.
What are leaning facings, replacement charts and void lines?
Within 4.5° of a mountain’s centre the standard chart is used; beyond 4.5° the replacement-star chart applies; within 1.5° of a mountain boundary the facing sits on a void line and should be avoided. All three are detected automatically.
Which rings are available?
Four presets — Simple, San Yuan, San He and Complete — plus custom rings: degrees, 28 mansions, solar terms, 64 hexagrams, 120 Fenjin, heaven and human plates, 24 Mountains, dragons, both Bagua, annual afflictions and an Eight Mansions tint.
How does floor-plan mode work?
Load a plan (kept on your device), frame the outer walls, drag the red arrow toward the door, and the plan is split into palaces with Flying Stars and Eight Mansions. Mark rooms to get a verdict and reasons for each.
Can it show where not to renovate this year?
Yes — the annual section lists the Grand Duke, Year Breaker, Three Killings, Five Yellow, Two Black and Dark Sword directions for this year and month, using exact solar-term timing, and flags clashes with your house.
Is it free?
The compass, all charts, floor-plan and map modes are free in English and Chinese. The Feng Shui House Reading is the site’s standard divination reading: sign in and buy it once per house — seven chapters, kept for good, with follow-ups. An Android app is available for steadier readings and offline use.
