When Heat Ceases and Coolness Arises: The Wisdom of Knowing When to Stop and the Rites of Returning to the Root at Chushu

Chapter Two: The Astronomical Basis of Chushu — The Sun Reaches 150 Degrees of Celestial Longitude
I. 150 Degrees Celestial Longitude: Chushu's Astronomical Coordinates
The astronomical definition of Chushu is precise: it occurs when the sun reaches 150 degrees of celestial longitude along the ecliptic. This number may seem abstract, yet it is the refined crystallization of millennia of the ancients' observations of heaven and measurements of shadows.
"Celestial longitude" refers to the degrees of the sun's progress along the ecliptic — the projection of Earth's orbital path around the sun onto the celestial sphere. Taking the vernal equinox point as zero degrees, each advance of fifteen degrees corresponds to one solar term. Liqiu (Start of Autumn) falls at 135 degrees, Chushu at 150, Bailu (White Dew) at 165, and Qiufen (Autumn Equinox) at 180. Chushu lies precisely between Liqiu and Bailu, making it the second solar term of autumn. From the vantage of 150 degrees, the sun has already moved noticeably "southward" — its altitude in the sky lowers day by day, the noonday shadow lengthens day by day, and daylight hours shorten day by day. All of this silently proclaims: the zenith of yang energy is past, and the process of gathering-in has already begun.
Yet the ancients did not determine Chushu using the modern concept of "degrees of celestial longitude." They employed methods more archaic, yet equally ingenious — observation of sun shadows and stellar configurations.
II. The Gnomon and Shadow: The Lengthening Shadow's Revelation of "Stopping"
The most fundamental method by which the ancients determined the solar terms was measuring the noonday shadow with a gnomon and dial. A vertical post (the biao, or gnomon) and a horizontal graduated surface (the gui, or dial) together constituted a complete astronomical observation system. The Zhouli (Rites of Zhou), in the section on the Grand Minister of Works, records: "Using the method of the earth-gnomon to measure the depth of the soil, one corrects the sun's shadow."
On the summer solstice, the noonday shadow is shortest and the sun highest; on the winter solstice, the noonday shadow is longest and the sun lowest. By the time of Chushu, the shadow has already noticeably lengthened from its summer-solstice minimum — telling the ancients: the sun is "turning back," "returning southward," and the trend of ever-rising, ever-intensifying heat has reversed direction.
There is a profoundly suggestive resonance here: the shadow's shift "from short to long" is the most direct visible manifestation of the Way of Heaven's "stopping and returning." The summer solstice marks the extreme of yang; as all things must reverse at their extreme, from that solstice onward, though yang still holds sway, it has already begun its quiet recession. By Chushu, this recession is first unambiguously reflected in the "cessation of heat." Through that shadow lengthening day by day, the ancients literally saw the turning of heaven's Way — what they saw was not an abstract "150 degrees of celestial longitude," but a tangible cosmic revelation about "ceasing at the point of extremity."
Why could this slowly lengthening shadow stir such profound feeling in the ancients$21 Because the shadow's change is exceedingly gradual, the difference from day to day barely perceptible. To read from this nearly imperceptible gradation the message that "the Way of Heaven has already turned" — what patience, what acuity this required! And this patience and acuity sprang precisely from the reverence of "respectfully bestowing the seasons upon the people." The Shangshu (Book of Documents), in the "Canon of Yao," states: "He commanded Xi and He to reverently accord with the luminous heavens, to calculate and delineate the sun, moon, and stars, and respectfully bestow the seasons upon the people." Observing heaven was not to satisfy curiosity but to express reverence; bestowing the seasons was not for convenience but to transmit — to solemnly convey the will of heaven to the human realm. The solar term Chushu is a message of the Way of Heaven that the ancients "read" from that lengthening shadow and then solemnly "bestowed" upon all the people: it is time to gather in.
III. Star Patterns and Chushu: The Migration of the Stars at Dusk
In addition to sun shadows, the ancients verified the solar terms by observing which constellations crossed the southern meridian at dusk. The Shangshu, "Canon of Yao," records the marker stars for the four mid-season months: "The day is of medium length and the marker star is Niao, thereby fixing mid-spring." "The day is longest and the marker star is Huo (Antares), thereby fixing mid-summer." "The night is of medium length and the marker star is Xu, thereby fixing mid-autumn." "The day is shortest and the marker star is Mao, thereby fixing mid-winter." Among these, "the night is of medium length and the marker star is Xu, thereby fixing mid-autumn" indicates that at the autumn equinox, day and night are equal, and the marker constellation at dusk on the southern meridian is Xu (Emptiness).
Chushu falls about a month before the autumn equinox, and its dusk-culminating stars are in the process of transitioning toward Xu. The Liji (Book of Rites), "Yueling" (Monthly Ordinances), explicitly records the celestial configuration for the first month of autumn (the month containing Chushu): "In the first month of autumn, the sun is in Yi; at dusk, Jian-xing culminates; at dawn, Bi culminates."
Particularly noteworthy is the westward setting of Antares (Dahuo xing, Heart-star Two). As discussed in the context of Lixia, Antares rises to the meridian in summer, the signature star of the season. By the seventh month, Antares has begun its descent toward the western horizon. The Shijing, in "Qi Yue" (Seventh Month) from the Airs of Bin, opens: "In the seventh month, the Fire star streams westward; in the ninth month, winter garments are given out" (qi yue liu huo, jiu yue shou yi). "Streaming" (liu) means descending, moving westward. This celebrated poem records precisely that critical celestial event around the time of Chushu: the great Fire star that blazed overhead all summer long, symbol of scorching heat, begins to "stream" downward. The star's westward flow is heaven's own dispatch that heat is about to cease.
Here again we see the core logic of the ancients' cosmology: the stars above, the heat below, and the "stopping" of the solar term — all three unified in a single thread. Antares streams westward in the heavens, heat ceases upon the earth, and the solar term of chu is established in the calendar. This is no coincidence but the inevitable result of the ancients' conviction that "heaven, earth, and humanity form one body." The displacement of a single star was, in the ancients' eyes, the signal of the entire cosmos turning.
