From End to Beginning: The Way of Culmination and Return in the Great Cold Solar Term

This article offers a deep reading of Great Cold (Dahan), the final of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms, drawing on pre-Qin Confucian and Daoist philosophy, etymological analysis, and astronomical and phenological traditions. It reveals the dialectic of extreme cold and returning spring, the cyclic principle that every ending harbors a new beginning, and illuminates the late-winter rites of the Grand Nuo exorcism and the clay ox ceremony—inviting the reader into the ancients' cosmic wisdom of 'tracing origins by returning to endings' and the eternal circle of ceaseless renewal.

From End to Beginning: The Way of Culmination and Return in the Great Cold Solar Term

Chapter Fifteen: Cultivating Body and Mind--Storage Nearing Completion and Protecting Yang to Welcome Spring

I. The End of Winter Storage: The "Storage" Virtue in Health Cultivation

In our reading of Start of Summer, we discussed the "growth" virtue in summer health cultivation (nurturing yang-qi's growth while practicing moderation to prevent excessive yang). Great Cold's fundamental principle of health cultivation lies in the "storage" virtue--following winter's "sealed concealment" according to the Way of Heaven, storing up vitality, and protecting fundamental energy.

The Huangdi Neijing, Suwen, "Treatise on Regulating the Spirit According to the Four Seasons," though compiled from pre-Qin through Han times, contains health cultivation thought deeply rooted in the pre-Qin view of heaven-humanity unity. Its discussion of winter health cultivation is supremely apt: "The three months of winter are called 'sealed concealment.' Water freezes and earth cracks; do not disturb the yang. Go to bed early and rise late, waiting always for sunlight... Avoid cold and seek warmth; do not let the skin be exposed and open, causing the qi to be rapidly depleted. This is the proper response to winter's qi, the way of nurturing storage. Going against it injures the kidneys; in spring one will suffer paralysis and weakness, with little to offer the function of birth."

The passage's final warning is especially profound: "Going against it injures the kidneys; in spring one will suffer paralysis and weakness, with little to offer the function of birth." This once again confirms the causal relationship between "winter storage" and "spring birth"! If winter (Great Cold) does not properly "nurture storage" (injuring the kidneys, depleting vital essence), then in spring there will be insufficient vital energy for "birth and growth" (spring paralysis, little to offer birth). In other words, whether spring can vigorously "grow" depends on whether winter has fully "stored"! Great Cold's health cultivation through "storage" is precisely for the sake of the coming spring's "birth" of body and mind.

II. Storage Nearing Completion: Special Regulation at the End of Winter Storage

Although Great Cold belongs to "winter storage," it falls at winter storage's "tail end"--storage is nearing completion, spring birth is approaching. Therefore Great Cold's health cultivation has its own special character, different from deep winter (early and mid-winter): it must continue "nurturing storage" (following the still-lingering bitter cold) while also beginning to prepare for "spring birth" (following the already recovering, growing yang-qi). This is a special regulation of "birth latent within storage," "storage about to end while birth is about to sprout."

This "nurturing storage's completion, protecting yang to welcome spring" regulation embodies Chinese health cultivation's deepest wisdom--it is not mechanical, rigid "storing to the bitter end," but sensitively follows the Way of Heaven's subtle transformation (yin at its extreme while yang has already been born), already laying gentle groundwork for "birth" at the tail end of "storage."

III. Warm Supplementation to Protect Yang: Great Cold's Dietary Way

Following Great Cold's need for "nurturing storage and protecting yang," the dietary principle of Great Cold emphasizes "warm supplementation"--using warm, nourishing foods to protect the body's stored yang-qi, nourish kidney essence, resist bitter cold, and accumulate vital energy for spring's birth.

But warm supplementation must have measure, must accord with the "middle way." True Great Cold dietary wisdom is "warm without dryness, supplementing without excess"--using moderate warm supplementation to protect yang-qi and nourish kidney essence, allowing body and mind, like the Lin hexagram's two yang, to dwell peacefully amid the cold, accumulating and quietly growing, awaiting spring's return.

IV. The Mind's Storage: Year-End Serenity and Hope

Great Cold health cultivation lies not only in the body (diet, daily routine, protecting yang) but in the mind (spirit, emotion, consciousness). The Huangdi Neijing's discussion of winter health cultivation particularly emphasizes the mind's "nurturing storage": "Let the will be as if hidden and concealed, as if harboring a private thought, as if one has already gained something."

This passage depicts a mental state of inwardness, stillness, contained reserve, and inner fullness. Great Cold is the ideal season for gathering the spirit inward, for quiet introspection, for letting the mind "return to root and return to destiny."

But Great Cold's mental storage is not the deathly silence of depression, but rather "as if one has already gained something"--inner fullness, satisfaction, and serenity filled with hope. Why "as if already gained"$5 Because one deeply knows "when things end, they begin again" and "extreme cold, returning spring"--one deeply knows that this year-end stillness (storage) is gestating the next spring's radiance (birth). Therefore Great Cold's mental storage is a "serenity filled with hope"--neither depressed by year-end's bleakness nor anxious over the cold's severity, but serenely and even gladly receiving this year-end "great stillness," and within it, holding the firm hope for a new spring, allowing the spirit to fully "nurture storage" and "return to destiny," quietly awaiting the coming year's spiritual renewal.

This "serenity filled with hope" is Great Cold's highest realm of spiritual health cultivation, and the deepest internalization within the human spirit of Great Cold's philosophy of "extreme cold, returning spring" and "when things end, they begin again."
