Nurturing Spring within the Cold: The Ascending Hexagram of Lesser Cold and the Prescience of Birds

This article offers a multidimensional exploration of Lesser Cold (Xiaohan) from the perspectives of pre-Qin Confucian and Daoist philosophy, etymological origins, astronomical observation, and phenological reasoning. It reveals the 'firm force gradually ascending' imagery of the Lin (Approach) hexagram in the twelfth month, the wisdom of birds — wild geese turning north, magpies building nests, pheasants calling — as creatures that 'sense yang and move first.' It examines the paradox of why 'Lesser Cold is often colder than Greater Cold,' and elucidates the spirit of the La sacrifice — offering thanks to origins in the depth of winter — and the ancient cosmology of the unity of Heaven and humanity.

Nurturing Spring within the Cold: The Ascending Hexagram of Lesser Cold and the Prescience of Birds

Chapter Eight: Yin-Yang and Five Phases — The Dialectic of Water's Virtue at Its Extreme and Yang Gradually Ascending within Cold

I. Winter Belongs to Water: The Sealing and Descending of Water's Virtue

We have mentioned repeatedly that late winter, in which Lesser Cold falls, belongs to "Water." Let us now delve deeply into the content of Water's Virtue and see how it governs every aspect of Lesser Cold.

Why does winter belong to Water$4 This requires understanding the fundamental characteristics of each of the Five Phases. The Book of Documents (Shangshu, "Great Plan") offers the classic summation: "Water is called 'moistening and descending'; Fire is called 'blazing and ascending'; Wood is called 'bending and straightening'; Metal is called 'yielding and transforming'; Earth is called 'sowing and reaping.'"

"Water is called 'moistening and descending'" — these four characters capture the fundamental character of Water, and thereby the fundamental character of winter and of Lesser Cold. "Moistening" (run) means nourishing — water nourishes all things and is the source of all life. Even in midwinter when Water reigns and all things are sealed away, water's fundamental function of "nourishing all things" never ceases — in the form of ice and snow, it silently moistens the soil, sustains the vitality concealed underground, and stores up the moisture vital for the coming spring's germination. The proverb "auspicious snow heralds a good harvest" expresses exactly this nourishing function of winter's water (snow).

"Descending" (xia) means moving downward, sinking, submerging. Water forever flows to the lowest point, downward, inward, into the depths. This characteristic of "descending" and "submerging" matches perfectly winter's theme of "closing and concealing."

II. At Cold's Extreme, Yang Gradually Ascends: The Dialectic of Yang within Water

Yet the deepest esoteric meaning of Lesser Cold's Water Virtue lies not in water's "moistening descent" and "sealing storage" themselves, but in a more dialectical, more subtle fact — at this very time when Water's Virtue is at its height and sealing is at its extreme, yang energy is precisely at its time of gradual ascent.

This is a seeming contradiction yet a profoundly deep dialectic: the more Water's Virtue seals to the extreme (Lesser Cold and Greater Cold, the coldest), the more yang energy ascends (two yangs already born, tending toward three). This is "at cold's extreme, yang gradually ascends."

Why does this happen$5 It must be understood from the fundamental principle of yin-yang mutual rooting and the reversal of extremes.

Yin and yang have never been absolutely opposed and mutually exclusive; they are interdependent, mutually transforming, each containing the other. The Xici (Appended Statements, Part I) of the Yijing says: "One yin and one yang — this is called the Dao." Between yin and yang there is no absolute boundary: within yang at its extreme, the seed of yin is already present (at the summer solstice, one yin is born); within yin at its extreme, the seed of yang is already present (at the winter solstice, one yang is born). This is the principle of yin-yang "mutual rooting" — yin takes yang as its root, yang takes yin as its root.

III. Lesser Cold in the Five-Phase Cycle: The Hidden Potential from Water to Wood

The Five Phases not only each have their characteristics but also form a cycle of mutual generation: Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood. In the seasonal cycle, this corresponds to: spring's Wood generates summer's Fire, summer's Fire generates Earth (of late summer), Earth generates autumn's Metal, autumn's Metal generates winter's Water, winter's Water generates (the coming spring's) Wood.

Late winter belongs to Water, and Water generates Wood — meaning that winter's Water is the "mother" of the coming spring's Wood. Winter's Water Virtue, though it appears to be nothing but sealing, austerity, and cold, is in its deepest function nurturing and engendering the coming spring's Wood Virtue, the coming spring's vitality. "Water generates Wood" is the fundamental basis in Five-Phase philosophy for "nurturing spring within cold" and "winter storage for spring's birth."

This is the deep meaning the Five-Phase cycle bestows upon Lesser Cold: Lesser Cold is not an isolated endpoint of "Water" but a hidden potential of "Water generating Wood," a pivot of "winter storage nurturing spring."

IV. "The Color Black," "The Flavor Salt," "The Number Six": Multi-Dimensional Manifestations of Water's Virtue

Linking "the color black," "the flavor salt," and "the number six" with the previously discussed "Sovereign Zhuanxu," "Spirit Xuanming," "shelled creatures," "the tone yu," and the rest, we see that during late winter, which contains Lesser Cold, the entire cosmos — from the constellations above, to the presiding deities, to the animals and plants on earth, to the organs and taste perceptions of the human body, to sounds, numbers, and colors — is threaded through and governed by the single master line of "Water's Virtue." This is the ultimate expression of the pre-Qin worldview of "the unity of Heaven and humanity" and "one thread running through all": though the ten thousand things differ vastly, they all resonate with the same qi of Water, of sealing and storing, of gestating. And deep within this all-pervasive Water's Virtue, the vitality of "at cold's extreme, yang gradually ascends" quietly surges — this is the full esoteric meaning of Lesser Cold's yin-yang and Five-Phase philosophy.
