Chapter 3: The Astronomical Basis of Mangzhong: The Sun Reaches Seventy-Five Degrees of Solar Longitude

I. Seventy-Five Degrees of Solar Longitude: A Coordinate Where Yang Is About to Culminate but Has Not Quite Done So

The astronomical definition of Mangzhong is exceedingly precise: Mangzhong is the exact moment at which the sun reaches seventy-five degrees of solar longitude (黄经).

What is solar longitude$17 Over the course of a year, the sun appears, on the celestial sphere, to travel repeatedly along a fixed great circle—the ecliptic (黄道). The ancients divided the ecliptic evenly into three hundred sixty degrees, counting from zero at the vernal equinox point. Every fifteen degrees the sun travels corresponds to one solar term. Lixia (立夏, Beginning of Summer) falls at forty-five degrees of solar longitude, Xiaoman (小满, Grain Full) at sixty degrees, Mangzhong at seventy-five degrees, and Xiazhi (夏至, Summer Solstice) at ninety degrees.

Behind this string of numbers lies the precise position of Mangzhong within the operation of Heaven's Way. Counting from the vernal equinox (zero degrees), the sun has already traversed three-quarters of a quadrant, with only fifteen degrees remaining before it reaches Xiazhi (ninety degrees, the point at which the sun reaches its northernmost culmination, the Tropic of Cancer). In other words, at the time of Mangzhong, the sun has climbed to nearly its highest position of the entire year, and yang qi has likewise climbed nearly to its peak. "About to culminate but not quite culminated"—these words best capture the astronomical temperament of Mangzhong. It has not yet reached the extremity, but is infinitely close to it; it is still rising, but the room left for it to rise has grown very small.

Why is this position of "about to culminate but not quite culminated" so critical$18 Because it stands precisely on the eve of the turning point of yin and yang's waxing and waning. Fifteen degrees further on, at Xiazhi, yang qi reaches its absolute summit—and when a thing reaches its extremity, it must reverse, so yin qi begins to sprout at once. Mangzhong stands upon the threshold of this turning point—yang qi is still making its final sprint, yet the seed of the coming turn is already faintly visible. The "first stirring of yin" in the Gou hexagram, which will be discussed in detail below, resonates precisely with this astronomical position, across a great distance.

II. Measuring Shadows with Gnomon and Scale: How Did the Ancients Capture Mangzhong$19

The ancients had no modern astronomical instruments. How, then, did they determine so fine a moment as Mangzhong$20

The oldest and most fundamental method was measuring shadows with the gnomon and the scale. The "Da Situ" (大司徒) chapter of the "Diguan" (地官) section of the Zhouli (周禮, Rites of Zhou) records: "By the method of the earth-gnomon, measure the depth of the earth, correct the sun's shadow, and thereby seek the center of the land" (以土圭之法测土深,正日景(影),以求地中). A vertically erected pole, the "biao" (表), together with a horizontally placed, graduated scale, the "gui" (圭), together formed the instrument for measuring the sun's shadow. At high noon, the shadow of the biao fell upon the surface of the gui, and by measuring the length of the shadow one could infer the sun's altitude in the sky.

The higher the sun, the shorter the noon shadow. At noon on the day of Xiazhi, the shadow is shortest; at noon on the day of Dongzhi (冬至, Winter Solstice), the shadow is longest. The noon shadow at Mangzhong is shorter than at Xiaoman and slightly longer than at Xiazhi—it falls within the process of the shadow's length shrinking day by day, on the verge of reaching its shortest point. Through records of shadow measurement accumulated year after year, generation after generation, the ancients gradually mastered the precise pattern of the shadow's changing length, and were thereby able to calculate a "transitional" solar term like Mangzhong, which possesses no conspicuous astronomical extremum of its own.

Here is a point worth pondering: Xiazhi and Dongzhi have clear astronomical extrema (shortest and longest shadow), making them easy to determine; the spring and autumn equinoxes have the marker of day and night being equal in length, likewise not difficult to judge. But a solar term like Mangzhong has neither an extremum nor an equality of day and night—it is purely the result of the sun reaching one precise position along the ecliptic. To determine it, the ancients had to rely on a precise mastery of the pattern of shadow-length change and on mathematical calculation. This means that, by the time the twenty-four-solar-term system had matured, the ancients' astronomical calculating ability had already reached a considerable level of sophistication—they were no longer satisfied with capturing only those "conspicuous" astronomical moments, but sought to divide the entire ecliptic finely, capturing every fifteen-degree transition. A solar term like Mangzhong is precisely the product of this pursuit of precision.

III. The "Minor Solar Terms" Among the Twenty-Four: Why Was Mangzhong Needed$21

In the oldest solar-term system, there were only the "two equinoxes and two solstices" (二分二至)—the vernal equinox, the autumnal equinox, the summer solstice, and the winter solstice. Later, the "four beginnings" (四立)—the beginnings of spring, summer, autumn, and winter—were added. These "eight nodes" (八节) mark the four starting points and four midpoints of the seasons, and could already divide the year roughly. Why, then, was a solar term like Mangzhong additionally established$22

The answer lies in agricultural production's utmost demand for precision in timing.

Although the "eight nodes" could mark the broad framework of the seasons, forty-five days separate each pair of adjacent nodes—far too coarse a grain for farming affairs that change from moment to moment. In the forty-five days from Lixia to Xiazhi, how many major agricultural events occur$23 At Xiaoman, the wheat grain gradually fills and swells; at Mangzhong, the wheat ripens and the rice is transplanted—these critical farming-time junctures could not be captured by the "eight nodes." So the ancients inserted still finer solar terms between the "eight nodes," one by one, dividing the year into twenty-four parts, each roughly fifteen days long. In this way, every important phenological and agricultural event could find a corresponding solar-term marker.

Mangzhong is precisely a crystallization of this refinement. It precisely marks the critical farming juncture at which "the bearded grain may be harvested and sown"—neither the vague notion that "summer has arrived" (Lixia) nor merely that "the wheat has begun to fill out" (Xiaoman), but the specific and urgent moment when "the wheat is ripe and ready for harvest, the rice seedlings are ready for transplanting." A dedicated solar term corresponding to a dedicated farming juncture—this is precisely the twenty-four-solar-term system's great contribution to agriculture. The very existence of Mangzhong is itself proof of the ancients' precise grasp of farming time and their sincerity in "respectfully bestowing the seasons upon the people."

IV. Stars and Seasons: The Sky on a Midsummer Night

Besides the sun's shadow, the ancients also confirmed the season through the stars.

The "Canon of Yao" in the Shangshu records: "The day is at its longest, and the Fire Star is at culmination; thereby the mid-point of summer is corrected" (日永星火,以正仲夏). At the time of Xiazhi, the day is at its longest ("ri yong"), and at dusk the conspicuous constellation that reaches culmination in the southern sky is "Fire" (火)—that is, Antares (心宿二, the "Great Fire Star," Alpha Scorpii). Mangzhong and Xiazhi both belong to the month of midsummer, and by dusk the Fire Star has already risen to a considerable altitude in the southern sky, drawing near to culmination. When the ancients looked up and saw that crimson Fire Star hanging high in the southern sky, they knew that midsummer had arrived and that yang qi was at its height.

The "Monthly Ordinances" (月令) chapter of the Book of Rites (禮記, Liji) gives a more specific record of the star-positions of the midsummer month: "In the month of midsummer, the sun is in the lodge Dongjing; at dusk, Kang culminates; at dawn, Wei culminates" (仲夏之月,日在东井,昏亢中,旦危中). In this month the sun travels through the Dongjing (东井) lodge (belonging to the Vermilion Bird of the south); at dusk the Kang (亢) lodge culminates in the south, and at dawn the Wei (危) lodge culminates in the south. These star-positions were the astronomical basis by which the ancients judged the season of midsummer. Mangzhong falls precisely within the month of midsummer, and its star-positions accord exactly with this description.

The Fire Star came to serve as the marker of midsummer not only because it is brightest and highest at this time, but also because its crimson hue naturally accords with the Five Phases (五行) conception that summer belongs to Fire, whose color is red. The crimson star in the sky, the blazing summer on the earth, the virtue of Fire among the Five Phases—these three fuse into one in the cosmology of the ancients. To look up at the Fire Star during Mangzhong is to see not merely a single star, but an astronomical confirmation of the entire cosmic picture in which "the virtue of Fire holds sway."
