The Highest Good Is Like Water: The Nourishing Virtue of Yushui and How Heaven-One Begets Water

Chapter 2 The Astronomical Foundation of Yushui: The Sun Arrives at 330° of Celestial Longitude
1. 330° of Celestial Longitude: The Position of Yushui on the Celestial Sphere
In the precise formulation of modern astronomy, the Yushui solar term corresponds to the moment the sun reaches 330° of ecliptic longitude. To understand the significance of this figure, we must first understand what "ecliptic longitude" means.
Over the course of a year, the sun appears to move slowly along a fixed great circle on the celestial sphere; this great circle is called the "ecliptic." The ancients had no modern term such as "ecliptic coordinates," yet through long observation they had already grasped the pattern of the sun's movement along the ecliptic. The Twenty-Four Solar Terms are, in essence, the division of the sun's one full circuit along the ecliptic (360°) into twenty-four equal parts, each solar term spanning 15°. Taking the point of the Spring Equinox (where the sun reaches 0° of ecliptic longitude) as the starting point: Spring Equinox at 0°, Qingming at 15°, Grain Rain at 30°... Beginning of Spring at 315°, Yushui at 330°, Jingzhe at 345°, and then back around to the Spring Equinox at 0°.
Yushui sits at 330° of ecliptic longitude, exactly between the Beginning of Spring (315°) and Jingzhe (345°), still 30° short of the Spring Equinox (0°, or 360°). This position tells us: during the Yushui season, the sun is returning from the Tropic of Capricorn toward the equator; the Northern Hemisphere is receiving steadily increasing sunlight, yet has not yet reached the equinox point at which day and night are of equal length. In other words, at this time yang qi is growing, but yin qi has not yet fully withdrawn—this is a transitional stage in which yang waxes as yin wanes, and cold and warmth contend with one another.
Why should this astronomical position correspond to the phenological pattern of "increased precipitation, snow gradually turning to rain"$22 Behind this lies solid astronomical and climatological logic. As the point of the sun's direct rays moves northward, the surface of the Northern Hemisphere receives more heat, evaporation of surface moisture intensifies, and the water-vapor content of the air rises; at the same time, warm, moist air currents begin to grow active, and where they meet the cold air that has not yet fully withdrawn, precipitation readily forms. Once temperatures rise past a certain threshold, precipitation no longer takes the form of snow but turns instead to rain—this is precisely the astronomical and climatological basis for the name "Yushui" (Rain Water). Though the ancients did not use terms such as "water vapor" or "warm moist air currents," through long observation of celestial phenomena and phenology they accurately grasped the pattern that "when the sun reaches this point, snow turns to rain," and condensed it into the name of a solar term.
2. How the Ancients Determined the Date of Yushui: The Gnomon and Its Shadow
Without modern astronomical instruments, how did the ancients precisely determine the dates of solar terms such as Yushui$23 The answer lies in the most essential astronomical instrument of ancient China—the gnomon and its shadow-scale (guibiao).
The "Office of Earth: Great Minister of Education" chapter of the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli) records: "By the method of the earth-gnomon, measure the depth of the earth, rectify the sun's shadow, and thereby seek the center of the land." The guibiao instrument consists of two parts: a vertical upright pole, the "biao" (gnomon), and a horizontal ruler laid flat, the "gui" (shadow-scale). By measuring, at noon each day, the length of the shadow the gnomon cast upon the shadow-scale, the ancients could precisely judge the sun's elevation, and thereby determine the solar terms.
On the day of the Winter Solstice, the sun is at its lowest, and the noon shadow is at its longest; on the day of the Summer Solstice, the sun is at its highest, and the noon shadow is at its shortest. From the Winter Solstice to the Summer Solstice, the noon shadow gradually shortens; from the Summer Solstice to the Winter Solstice, it gradually lengthens. The length of the noon shadow at the Yushui solar term falls between that of the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox—shorter than at the Winter Solstice, but longer than at the Spring Equinox. By recording the length of the noon shadow day after day, year after year, the ancients gradually compiled a complete table correlating shadow length with solar term. When the noon shadow on a given day reached a certain specific length, they knew: Yushui had arrived.
Here a question worth pondering arises: how did the ancients first come to think of measuring the shadow cast by that pole$24 The change in the shadow's length is extremely gradual, the difference from one day to the next almost imperceptible to the naked eye. What manner of patience and conviction drove the ancients to undertake this long observation, spanning generations$25 The answer, once again, lies in the four characters "respectfully bestow the seasons." Agricultural production depends absolutely on timing—especially at the Yushui solar term, which bears directly on whether spring plowing can proceed smoothly. To miss the spring rains, to miss the sowing season, meant a poor harvest for the year, or even famine. In that age, with no other standard of time available, astronomical observation was not a scholarly pursuit but a matter bearing on the very life and death of the entire people. It was precisely this pressure of survival that drove the ancients, with extraordinary concentration, to fix their gaze upon the shadow cast by that gnomon pole, measuring the movement of the Way of Heaven inch by inch.
3. Cross-Verification Through Constellations and Phenology
Besides the sun's shadow, the ancients also determined the solar terms by observing the positions of the constellations and the changes of phenology, cross-verifying through multiple methods at once. That famous passage in the "Canon of Yao" of the Book of Documents reads: "At the day of medium length, with the Bird constellation culminating, he thereby fixed mid-spring; at the longest day, with the Fire star culminating, he thereby determined mid-summer; at the night of medium length, with the Emptiness constellation culminating, he thereby fixed mid-autumn; at the shortest day, with the Pleiades culminating, he thereby determined mid-winter." This records the marker constellations corresponding to the four "mid-seasons" (Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, Autumn Equinox, Winter Solstice). Though Yushui is not directly mentioned here, this passage reveals the ancients' basic method of "fixing time by the stars"—by observing, at dusk, which constellation culminates due south, one could infer the season.
The "Monthly Ordinances" (Yueling) chapter of the Book of Rites (Liji) records the celestial phenomena of the first month of spring (the month in which Yushui falls): "In the first month of spring, the sun is in the lodge Yingshi (Encampment); at dusk, the Can (Triaster) constellation culminates; at dawn, the Wei (Tail) constellation culminates." The sun has moved to the position of Yingshi; at dusk, the Can constellation stands due south at its culmination; at dawn, the Wei constellation stands due south at its culmination. This method of marking the month by the sun's lodging-place (the position of the sun among the lunar lodges) together with the culminating stars at dusk and dawn was another important basis by which the ancients determined the solar terms.
More importantly, the ancients were not content with a single criterion of judgment, but cross-verified using the sun's shadow, the constellations, and phenology together. When the shadow reached the proper length, the constellations were in the proper place, and the phenological signs arrived on schedule—only when all three lines of evidence concurred could the solar term be confirmed beyond doubt. This method of "uniting three proofs" embodies the ancients' plain yet rigorous empirical spirit. The phenological signs of the Yushui solar term—the otter's laying out of fish, the wild geese returning northward, plants and trees beginning to sprout—constitute a crucial link in this system of verification. When the ancients saw the otter begin to catch and lay out fish, saw the wild geese fly in formation northward, saw plants and trees quietly begin to sprout, they were assured: the sun had indeed arrived at 330° of ecliptic longitude, and Yushui had indeed come. The sun in the sky, the constellations in the night sky, and the phenological signs on the earth—these three, in the ancients' understanding, formed one seamless whole. This is precisely the concrete manifestation, in astronomical practice, of the cosmology of the unity of Heaven and humanity.
4. The Position of Yushui Within the System of Solar Terms: From the "Two Equinoxes and Two Solstices" to the Twenty-Four Solar Terms
In the earliest system of solar terms, there were only the "two equinoxes and two solstices"—the Spring Equinox, the Autumn Equinox, the Summer Solstice, and the Winter Solstice. These four solar terms were the easiest to determine through astronomical observation. Afterward, the "four beginnings" were added—the Beginning of Spring, the Beginning of Summer, the Beginning of Autumn, and the Beginning of Winter—forming the "eight nodes." Later still, the ancients further subdivided the intervals between these eight nodes, ultimately forming the complete system of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms.
Yushui was established in the course of this ongoing process of refinement. It follows immediately after the Beginning of Spring, as the second of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms. Why should a term called "Rain Water" be established immediately following the Beginning of Spring$26 Because although the Beginning of Spring marks the start of spring, "beginning" is merely an abstract starting point—it tells people that spring has arrived, but does not tell them what the "substantial content" of spring actually is. Yushui fills precisely this gap: the first substantial work of spring is precipitation. Without the nourishment of rain water, the spring proclaimed by the Beginning of Spring would remain but an empty title. The establishment of the Yushui solar term brings spring down from an abstract concept to a concrete, perceptible rainfall that nourishes all things.
Seen from this angle, the relationship between the Beginning of Spring and Yushui closely resembles that between the "name" (ming) and the "actuality" (shi) of a thing: the Beginning of Spring fixes its name, while Yushui fills out its substance. The Beginning of Spring is spring's proclamation; Yushui is spring's fulfillment. That the ancients established Yushui immediately after the Beginning of Spring reflects their profound understanding of the essence of spring—spring is spring not because of the rise in temperature, but because of that spring rain which sets the ten thousand things flowing and sprouting anew.
