A Systematic Survey of Duan-School Blind-Sect Fate Calculation

A systematic survey of Duan-school Blind-Sect (Mangpai) fate calculation, examined through its lineage, guest-and-host framework, substance-and-function framework, structural work (gong), emptiness and solidity, the Ten Gods, image-reading methods, tomb-and-storage palaces, and timing systems — with a clearly bounded comparison to the Ziping pattern method.

Chapter 13 A Systematic Comparison of Blind-Sect Practice and the Ziping Method

Duan-school Blind Sect and the Ziping pattern method share a common body of basic material, yet organize the same set of terms as though using two different grammars. The comparison below aims to clarify where each method places its focus of observation, without reducing either side to a lesser version of the other.

Dimension of ComparisonZiping Pattern MethodBlind Sect (Duan-School Structural-Work System)
Primary point of entryTakes the month command as the pivot; examines whether what is revealed and stored can establish a patternTakes the host position of Day and Hour as the standpoint; examines guest-and-host, substance-and-function, and the chain of work
Core questionWhich pattern is established, how it is protected, controlled-and-transformed, and rescued, and how the Luck-and-Annual Pillars succeed or fail itWho does work upon whom, by what means an object is obtained or transformed, and to whom the result belongs
The meaning of "function"Usually refers to the Useful God or assisting spirit that protects the pattern and balances the whole chartUsually refers to the object, resource, or thing-acted-upon within substance-and-function — not an assisting-or-restraining Useful God
The place of strength and weaknessThe month command's governance and the strength of rooting qi are important conditions for judging the patternDoes not take the Day Master's strength/weakness and Useful-God selection as the analytical axis, though rooting and strength still affect the efficiency of the work
Reading the Ten GodsThe Ten Gods are subordinate to the month-command pattern, to purity versus mixture, and to the relationship with the assisting spiritThe Ten Gods intersect with guest-and-host, substance-and-function, and palace position, with emphasis on functional transformation
Stem-and-branch relationshipsServe the success or failure of the pattern and the rescue of what is favorable or unfavorableExpressed as action mechanisms — control, transformation, combination, generation-and-drainage, tomb-extraction
The role of palace positionsConsiders the Six Relatives and life domains alongside the patternGuest-and-host ownership and where things land in Day-and-Hour are more central
Judging wealth and statusThe tier of the pattern, its purity, the strength of the assisting spirit, and the cooperation of the Luck-and-Annual PillarsThe scale of the function, the degree of control, its attribution, stability, and the efficiency of the work
Method of timingThe Luck-and-Annual Pillars supporting, completing, breaking, or rescuing the pattern, and triggers from the Ten Gods and palace positionsFilling-in, appearing, clash-motion, combination-motion, piercing-motion, the opening-and-closing of tomb-storages, and broken work
Style of expressionTends to form an argument chain of "pattern — assisting spirit — favorable/unfavorable — Luck-and-Annual Pillars"Tends to form an event chain of "guest-and-host — substance-and-function — action — result — timing"

1. Concepts That Must Not Be Substituted for One Another

The most common confusion is treating the Duan-school "function" directly as the Ziping Useful God, treating "substance" as the Day Master's strength or weakness, and treating "structural work" as ordinary generation-and-control. In reality, Ziping's selection of a Useful God is concerned with what the overall order of the chart requires, while Duan-school substance-and-function is concerned with the subject and object of an action. A wealth star that is the favorable Useful God within the Ziping pattern may, in the Duan-school reading, do no work at all because it sits far off in the guest position with no one to obtain it; a Seven Killings that needs to be controlled-and-transformed in Ziping may, in the Duan-school reading, be regarded as a high-value object, such that a successful control-and-transformation forms a channel to power. That the two conclusions occasionally coincide does not mean the reasoning behind them is the same.

2. A Common Foundation That Can Cross-Check Both Systems

The two systems can still cross-check each other at the level of basics. The month command, what is revealed and stored, and rooting qi can help judge whether Duan-school structural work carries real force; guest-and-host ownership and where a result lands can remind Ziping analysis not to talk only in terms of an abstract pattern while ignoring the actual subject of the event. In particular, the stem-and-branch relationships, the generation of the Ten Gods, and the contents of the hidden stems must be consistent: if one side writes Zi and Wu as a combination, calls Mao a self-punishment, or calls a half-combination a complete three-combination, that is not a difference between schools — it is a basic error.

3. The Method of Reading the Same Chart Twice

When reading the same chart through both systems, one should first complete two separate analyses and only then compare them, rather than mixing the two while reading. The Ziping draft should, in order, set out the month command, what is revealed, the establishing of the pattern, its success or failure, the assisting spirit, and the Luck-and-Annual Pillars; the Duan-school draft should, in order, set out guest-and-host, substance-and-function, structural work, efficiency, image, and timing. One then compares whether the two agree on the channel to career success, the attribution of the result, and the points of risk. Where they disagree, one should record which premise the disagreement stems from, rather than using the terminology of one system to patch a gap in the other.

For example, in a chart where food-and-hurter controls the Killings, the Ziping pattern method may be concerned with whether the Eating God is a favorable Useful God, whether the Killings is rooted, and whether the Seal or Wealth damages the control of the Killings; the Duan-school reading is concerned with whether food-and-hurter is the substance of the host position, whether the Killings sits in the guest position, and whether power belongs to the host once controlled. Both will check the actual strength of food-and-hurter and the Killings, but one centers on the order of the pattern while the other centers on the mechanism of acquisition. It is precisely this kind of comparison that carries genuine intellectual value.

4. What Each System Expresses Best

The Ziping pattern method excels at describing the overall order of a chart and its long-term tier, and is particularly able to explain why charts that share the same wealth and officer differ in success or failure owing to differences in the month command, what is revealed and stored, and the assisting spirit. The Duan-school structural-work system excels at describing action, ownership, and the path of an event, and is particularly able to answer where a resource comes from, through whom it is processed, and where it finally lands. The former resembles an institutional design diagram; the latter resembles a flowchart. Both remain models internal to the traditional practice of fate calculation, and neither automatically gains scientific verification merely because its metaphor is clear.
