A Systematic Survey of Duan-School Blind-Sect Fate Calculation

A systematic survey of Duan-school Blind-Sect (Mangpai) fate calculation, examined through its lineage, guest-and-host framework, substance-and-function framework, structural work (gong), emptiness and solidity, the Ten Gods, image-reading methods, tomb-and-storage palaces, and timing systems — with a clearly bounded comparison to the Ziping pattern method.

A Systematic Survey of Duan-School Blind-Sect Fate Calculation

Chapter 15 A Path of Study and a Guide to the Literature

1. Stage One: Mastering the Shared Foundation Precisely

First commit to memory the yin-and-yang and five-phase nature of the ten heavenly stems, the hidden stems of the twelve earthly branches, the generation of the Ten Gods, the five combinations, the six combinations, the six clashes, the six harms, the three-combinations, the three-unions, the triple punishments, and the four tomb-storages. In practice, do only "objective annotation" at first, without rushing to judge fortune or misfortune. In particular, one should be able to tell at a glance the difference between a half-combination and a complete three-combination, between a single self-punishing branch and the same branch reappearing, between a mere combination and an actual transformation, and between a tomb-storage's mere presence and a genuine entry into the tomb. If the foundation is wrong, the more technique one learns afterward, the harder it becomes to correct.

For the Ziping pattern method, one can read the chapters on the month command and the Ten-God pattern in the Yuanhai Ziping and the Sanming Tonghui (Compendium of the Three Fates), and then use the Ziping zhenquan (True Explanations of Ziping), together with reliable annotated editions, to build a clear framework for establishing a pattern from the month command and for its success, failure, and rescue. When reading these classical texts, one should pay attention to differences among editions and commentators, and not mistake a later commentator's gloss for the original text. The goal of this stage is not to mix the two systems together, but to understand exactly how the Ziping pattern method reasons, so that it can serve as a genuine point of reference.

2. Stage Two: Building a Duan-School Glossary

When reading Duan Jianye's Mingli zhenbao (Treasures of Fate Calculation) and related Blind-Sect textbooks and course materials on principle, image, and technique, give priority to editions whose publication information is clear and whose source can be traced. Book titles, volume divisions, and lecture-note versions may differ as they circulate in the market, so when purchasing or reading, check the author, publisher, edition, and table of contents, rather than citing a file name found on a shared cloud drive as though it were a proper bibliographic reference.

Build your own set of terminology cards: guest and host, substance and function, functioning spirit, discarded spirit, thief spirit and catching spirit, standard formation and reversed formation, emptiness and solidity, efficiency of structural work, tomb-and-storage palaces, and the guest becoming the host. Each card should record only four items: the definition, the conditions under which it holds, a counter-example, and the page number of the original source. Where definitions conflict across versions, list both accounts side by side rather than hastily collapsing them into a single, all-purpose formula.

3. Stage Three: Practice Structure Alone, Without Chasing Dazzling Pronouncements

Select a hundred Four-Pillar charts and analyze each by a fixed seven-step procedure: list the Ten Gods and hidden stems, divide guest from host, fix substance and function, locate the interactions, evaluate the efficiency, extract a small number of images, and write out the conditions for timing. In early practice, write only structural sentences such as "the food-and-hurter of the host position controls the Killings of the guest position" or "wealth enters the host's storehouse but is subject to a contested combination" — do not write anything as specific as a career or an illness that cannot be checked. Once structural judgment is stable, gradually add readings of the Six Relatives and career imagery.

For the same chart, separately write a Ziping pattern-method analysis as well. Keep the two sets of notes in separate columns, and do not borrow terminology from one to patch the other. At the end of the month, review: which conclusions came from the month-command pattern, which came from guest-and-host structural work, where the two point in the same direction, and where they diverge. This prevents one from calling every "useful character" a Useful God after learning Blind-Sect practice, and equally prevents one from mistakenly reducing the Ziping pattern method to a mere calculation of strength and weakness.

4. Stage Four: Building a Verifiable Case Archive

A case archive should record the reliability tier of the original birth data, whether the time was verified, what information was already known before the question was asked, the judgment made beforehand, the feedback received, and any failed items. Do not excerpt only the sentences that turned out to hit. Annotate every judgment with its grounds — for example, "the Day Branch is clashed by the Annual Pillar while the spouse star is simultaneously filled in" — rather than simply writing "marital change in a given year." When the same rule fails repeatedly, one should return to examine its definition rather than continuously adding patches to it.

When studying timing, begin with blind tests sliced from known events: look only at the original chart and the Luck-and-Annual Pillars up to a given year, write down the three highest-probability domains, and only then reveal the outcome. Time windows should be stated clearly, and the language used should be judgeable as right or wrong. Only after a sufficient number of samples can one know whether a given technique is a stable rule, a low-probability hint, or an image-reading method suited only to particular individual cases.

5. Discipline and Ethics in Study

Do not substitute "secret transmission" for argument; do not build authority through intimidation; do not deliver unfounded, definite pronouncements about health, life and death, or legal proceedings; and do not induce anyone to abandon professional help on the strength of a fate-calculation conclusion. When the birth hour is uncertain, acknowledge the resulting input error first; when feedback does not match a prediction, record the failure rather than quietly altering the chart. The ceiling of one's study in fate calculation is determined not only by how many mnemonic formulas one has memorized, but also by whether one can honestly handle uncertainty.
