A Complete Study of Commercial Shop Fengshui (Esoteric Edition): From Form School and the Luopan to Xuankong Dating
A systematic account of commercial shop fengshui built on the traditional arts themselves — exterior form school (luantou), the Twenty-Four Mountains, Three Cycles Xuankong plotting, doors/paths/registers, annual date selection, Five Phases remediation, and worked case studies.

XVIII. Methods for Judging Xuankong Combinations
1. First Sort Generation, Control, Comparison, and Draining
When two stars share a palace, judge first by their Five Phases relation. One star generating the other is generation; the same Five Phase shared is comparison, either harmonious or stacking; one star controlling the other is restraint or conflict; the star receiving generation flourishes, while the star doing the generating is drained. Then combine this with the flourishing and decline of the current period to judge which one holds the force. A flourishing star controlling a declining star, and a declining star controlling a flourishing star, carry different meanings; generating a flourishing sha and draining a flourishing sha must likewise not be confused.
For example, Nine Fire generating Two Earth: if Two Black is an Earth that calls for caution, a flourishing Fire may generate the Earth and strengthen it further; Metal can be used to drain the Earth, but Metal is in turn controlled by Fire, so its quantity and form must be kept in check. Three Wood controlling Two Earth may set up a Wood-Earth conflict; using Fire as a pass-through — Wood generating Fire, Fire generating Earth — can ease the direct conflict, but in the Ninth Period, when Fire is flourishing, one must also guard against Fire and Earth becoming excessive together. Remediation must always look at the whole palace, not follow a single fixed formula.
2. Finding Timing and Losing Timing
A currently governing star that finds a matching mountain and water is "finding both timing and place" (deling deidi), and holds the truest force; a currently governing star whose form and use run contrary to it is "finding timing but losing place"; a star that has lost its timing, if continuously activated by a door, water, or fire, may show its negative side even though it does not currently govern; a star that has lost its timing and lies still is comparatively weak in its effect. Reading a chart means writing out all four of these states, not simply circling things in red or green.
A commercial shop has many strongly active points: automatic doors, escalators, the stove, sound systems, flickering screens, fish tanks, air vents. These will activate the combination within their palace. A storeroom, although still, is not entirely a still space either if it sees high-frequency loading and unloading every day. The real frequency with which a function is actually used determines whether a star is triggered.
3. The Relative Weight of the Mountain Star and the Facing Star
Where the mountain star sharing a palace generates the facing star, and that palace serves as a door or path, there may be a sense of still qi generating active use; where the facing star generates the mountain star, active qi drains toward the stable layer, and wealth-use may not concentrate there. Where they control each other, one must look at the palace's actual function: a register area cares more about whether the facing star can find proper use without being heavily controlled, while an office cares more about the mountain star and its support. No single combination name can cover every function.
Where the mountain star and facing star are the same number, this is called "double stars" (shuangxing), but double stars arriving at the mountain, double stars arriving at the facing, and double stars in some other palace all carry different meanings. When the currently flourishing double stars meet the facing, and the facing direction sees water with a mountain further beyond, tradition holds this can favor both wealth and people together; water alone with no mountain leans toward wealth-use only; height and solidity alone with no water leaves the facing star confined. The form determines how the double stars are actually taken up.
4. Common Star Combinations Serve Only as a Semantic Index
One and Four are often linked to the imagery of literary learning, dissemination, and creativity, and require checking whether Water and Wood flow properly together; Two and Five, both Earth, call for the greatest caution when they have lost their timing and are activated; Three and Seven are Wood controlled by Metal, often taking the imagery of disputes and injury; Six and Seven gather Metal, carrying both authority and efficiency as well as rigid control and disputes; Seven and Nine are Metal at war with Fire, though it can also be read as Fire refining Metal — flourishing versus decline and actual use decide which shows through; Eight and Nine are Earth generated by Fire — in the Ninth Period, Fire generates Earth, and whether that Earth becomes a burden needs close examination.
These are not fixed predictions of specific events. So-called literary star (wenchang), disputes, sickness talisman, and theft-and-loss are all categories of imagery within the divinatory arts, and must never be used to accuse an employee, predict an illness, or substitute for medical care and security. A commercial report should write something like "tradition suggests strengthening contract review, communication, and security checks here," rather than declaring that an incident is bound to occur in some particular month.
5. The Special Nature of the Central Palace
The central palace is the pivot of the whole chart, usually with no exterior wall and no direct mountain or water, and should not simply have moving water placed in it the way one might in one of the eight outer palaces. The central palace should be kept clear, tidy, and stable. If it happens to hold a stairwell, an elevator shaft, a toilet, or a large piece of equipment, one must examine how its continuous activity carries the central palace's combination out across the whole shop.
Having Five Yellow enter the center does not mean the whole shop cannot operate, since the annual star cycles through by rule regardless. Tradition places more weight on avoiding major demolition or disturbance of the central palace and avoiding activating it with Fire and Earth, keeping it quiet, and, where necessary, using a moderate amount of Metal-phase symbolism to drain the Earth. If the central palace genuinely has a structural problem or a leak, it must be repaired through real engineering work — this must never be delayed on the excuse that "stillness is preferred here."
6. Six Questions for Cross-Verifying the Star Chart and Form School
Ask of every palace: what is the mountain star, what is the facing star, what is its current flourishing or decline, what form is seen outside, what function is there inside, and is it triggered by the annual star. Only after answering all six should one write the tendency toward fortune or misfortune and any adjustment. If any one of these is missing, mark it "insufficient data."
For example, if the southeast palace's currently flourishing facing star is Nine, with a gently approaching road outside and the main door and a low cabinet inside, this carries the sense of the facing star finding both water and a door; but if the mountain star sharing that palace is Two Black, and a staff member's long-term seat is also placed there, the moving and still uses must be separated — letting the door take up the facing star while moving the fixed seat to a more stable palace. A single palace can very well be "favorable to movement, unfavorable to stillness" — it need not be wholly auspicious or wholly inauspicious throughout.
7. Fortune and Misfortune Cannot Be Judged by Adding Numbers Together
Folk practice sometimes simplifies things by adding the mountain-star and facing-star numbers together, looking at the last digit, or combining them into an "auspicious number" — this article does not adopt that as a method of Xuankong judgment. The flying-star numbers represent a quality of qi and a sequence, not arithmetic fortune-telling. Nine plus One does not become perfect merely because it equals ten, and Two and Five do not transform into Seven Red merely because they sum to seven. One should analyze layer by layer according to the Five Phases, flourishing and decline, and form and use.
Likewise, a street number, a phone number, or the digits of a payment code should not be plugged directly into a house chart. Xuankong Flying Star flies according to space and time, and the meaning of a number comes from the chart itself — not every numerical scenario shares the same meaning.
