When Heat Ceases and Coolness Arises: The Wisdom of Knowing When to Stop and the Rites of Returning to the Root at Chushu

This article explores Chushu (End of Heat) from the perspectives of pre-Qin Confucian and Daoist philosophy, etymological origins, and astronomical phenology, revealing the wisdom shared between 'heat ceases at this point' and 'knowing where to stop, one finds stability.' Through analysis of the character chu (to stop), the hawk's ritual offering of birds, the onset of heaven and earth's solemnity, and the grain's ascent as a return to origins, the article illuminates the ancient way of measured restraint and reverent remembrance.

When Heat Ceases and Coolness Arises: The Wisdom of Knowing When to Stop and the Rites of Returning to the Root at Chushu

Chapter Eleven: "Heaven and Earth Begin Their Solemnity" and "Autumn Executions" — The Unity of Punishment, Righteousness, and Reverence

I. The Multiple Dimensions of the Character Su (Solemn, Austere)

The character su (肃) merits special attention, for it governs the politics, ethics, and self-cultivation of autumn.

The Shuowen Jiezi glosses su: "Conducting affairs with trembling reverence. The character depicts a hand holding a brush above an abyss — trembling with caution." From this root meaning, su extends into several dimensions: first, reverence and gravity (suran qijing, "rising in solemn respect"); second, restraint and disciplined order (suzheng, "to bring into strict order"); third, cool desolation (susha, xiaosu); fourth, punitive execution (susha, "solemn killing"; suqing, "to purge").

"Heaven and earth begin their solemnity" — the su here simultaneously encompasses all these senses: the atmosphere between heaven and earth becomes cool and desolate (meteorological solemnity), begins to manifest a severe and punitive vital breath (punitive solemnity), and seems also to adopt a posture of grave reverence in gathering up summer's clamor (reverence and restraint). A single character unifies autumn's "cold," "killing," "reverence," and "restraint."

II. Why Does "Heaven and Earth Begin Their Solemnity" Correspond to "Executing Punishments"$10

The Liji Yueling, in the context of "heaven and earth begin their solemnity," expressly mandates that the first month of autumn shall "execute the guilty and strictly carry out punishments" and "thus begins the execution." This directly links the natural phenomenon to the human institution of punishment. This is the cosmological basis of the ancient Chinese institution of "autumn and winter executions" (qiujue).

Why must punitive executions be carried out in autumn$11 Because in the conviction of "heaven-human resonance," human judicial administration must harmonize with the rhythm of the Way of Heaven. Spring and summer are when the Way of Heaven "gives life" and "nurtures growth"; to execute people in these seasons would be to act against heaven. But autumn is when the Way of Heaven "gathers" and "kills"; executing punishments and purging wickedness at this time accords with heaven — "carrying out punishment on heaven's behalf."

III. "Righteousness" Within Punitive Execution

But "autumn executions" never endorsed indiscriminate killing. Quite the contrary: accompanying "heaven and earth begin their solemnity" and "execution" is an extreme insistence on judicial care. The Monthly Ordinances state: "In deciding lawsuits, they must be upright and impartial."

Why this simultaneous emphasis on "impartiality"$12 Because though punitive execution accords with heaven, the Way of Heaven's "killing" is possessed of "righteousness" — it kills what ought to be killed, without excess or injustice. Autumn's severity fells the vegetation that should wither and reaps the crops that should be harvested; it never wantonly destroys what is still growing. Human punitive action must likewise be governed by "righteousness."

IV. Su and Reverence: The Awe Within Severity

The original meaning of su is "reverence." "Heaven and earth begin their solemnity" therefore means not only "heaven and earth begin their severity" but also "heaven and earth begin to manifest a solemn and reverent atmosphere."

Why must severity be accompanied by "reverence"$13 Because "killing" is an affair of the utmost gravity — it concerns the ending of life. Whether the Way of Heaven felling vegetation or human courts executing criminals, the act must not be taken lightly but must be performed with deep awe and solemn gravity.

V. Autumn's Punishments and Spring's Pardons: The Tension and Release of the Way of Heaven

Setting early autumn's "execution and strict punishment" alongside early spring's edicts reveals the tension and release the Way of Heaven demonstrates in human governance. Spring decrees: "Distribute beneficence and harmonious edicts, bestow celebratory gifts, extend kindness to all the people... nurture the young, care for the orphaned." Autumn decrees: "Revise laws, repair prisons, execute the guilty, strictly enforce punishments." This tension and release — spring's leniency and autumn's rigor — is the Way of Heaven's seasonal rhythm projected into politics.
