From End to Beginning: The Way of Culmination and Return in the Great Cold Solar Term
This article offers a deep reading of Great Cold (Dahan), the final of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms, drawing on pre-Qin Confucian and Daoist philosophy, etymological analysis, and astronomical and phenological traditions. It reveals the dialectic of extreme cold and returning spring, the cyclic principle that every ending harbors a new beginning, and illuminates the late-winter rites of the Grand Nuo exorcism and the clay ox ceremony—inviting the reader into the ancients' cosmic wisdom of 'tracing origins by returning to endings' and the eternal circle of ceaseless renewal.

Chapter Eighteen: The Philosophical Chapter of "Why"--Why Does Extreme Cold Give Birth to Spring, Why Does Ending Immediately Become Beginning
I. Returning to the Fundamental Questions
As this essay approaches its conclusion, let us gather all its inquiries and return to the two most fundamental "whys"--these two questions are the core of Great Cold's entire philosophical significance, and the core of the entire Twenty-Four Solar Terms' cyclical Way.
The first question: Why does extreme cold give birth to spring$9 Why is the year's coldest Great Cold precisely the eve of spring (warmth, vitality)$10 Why is "yin at its extreme" precisely "yang's birth"$11
The second question: Why does ending immediately become beginning$12 Why does the "last" of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms, Great Cold, directly adjoin and gestate the "first," Start of Spring$13 Why is "the year's end" precisely "the year's beginning"$14
These two questions seem like two but are really one--they both point to the same deepest core of the pre-Qin cosmological view: the cycle.
II. Why Does Extreme Cold Give Birth to Spring$15--The Inevitability of Yin-Yang Transformation
"Why does extreme cold give birth to spring$16" is, from the law of yin-yang waxing and waning, an "inevitability."
We have repeatedly demonstrated: yin and yang are not two mutually sealed, endlessly competing forces, but mutually transforming, mutually containing, ceaselessly cycling two faces of one whole. Yin-qi's growth cannot proceed infinitely--when it accumulates to the extreme (Great Cold, old yin, ice frozen to the core), it has "filled up," "reached exhaustion," can increase no further. And the Zhouyi's law of "exhaustion leads to transformation" tells us: when anything reaches "exhaustion" (the extreme), it must "transform" (convert). Yin exhausted at Great Cold must inevitably "transform"--convert into yang. This is not happenstance but the inevitable law of yin-yang waxing and waning.
At a deeper level, through "yang within Kan" and "fire hidden in water," we see that the extreme of yin (Kan's water) inherently contains yang (Kan's central yang line). Within Great Cold's utmost yin, there has always been the yang-qi that has been growing since the Winter Solstice's "return of one yang," now at "two yang gradually growing." Therefore, "extreme cold gives birth to spring" is not yang-qi "appearing from nowhere" after Great Cold, but the yang always hidden within utmost yin, having accumulated enough strength to finally burst through yin-cold and manifest externally--hence Start of Spring arrives and spring is born.
This is the answer to "why does extreme cold give birth to spring": because yin at its extreme must reverse (exhaustion leads to transformation), because yin contains yang within it (Kan is full), the extreme of cold (yin) must give birth to spring (yang). This is the inevitable, inviolable law of yin-yang waxing and waning within the Way of Heaven.
III. Why Does Ending Immediately Become Beginning$17--The Nature of Cyclical Time
"Why does ending immediately become beginning$18" is rooted, from the nature of time, in the pre-Qin "cyclical view of time."
In the ancients' cosmological view, time is not a one-way arrow (in which case "ending" would be an absolute terminus, "beginning" a creation from nothing, and the two would be utterly separate), but an eternally revolving circle (in which case the "ending" point on the circle directly adjoins the "beginning" point; reaching the very end means returning to the very start, beginning anew).
This is the answer to "why does ending immediately become beginning": because the nature of time (the Way of Heaven) is cyclical (circular), not linear; on the cyclical circle, the point of "ending" forever connects to the point of "beginning," so Great Cold's ending is necessarily Start of Spring's beginning.
IV. Two Questions Become One: The Way of Heaven's Ceaseless Renewal of Life
Now let us merge these two questions and two answers into one.
"Extreme cold gives birth to spring" (the inevitable transformation of yin and yang) and "ending is immediately beginning" (the cyclical nature of time) ultimately reveal one and the same fundamental attribute of the Way of Heaven--ceaseless renewal of life (sheng sheng bu xi).
Why must yin at its extreme give birth to yang, extreme cold give birth to spring$19 Because the Way of Heaven "loves life"--the fundamental will, the fundamental virtue of the Way of Heaven is "life" (causing life to be endlessly produced, sustained, and cycled). The Zhouyi, Xici Xia, states: "The great virtue of heaven and earth is called 'life.'" The Xici Shang states: "Ceaselessly producing life--this is called the Changes" (sheng sheng zhi wei yi). The Way of Heaven causes yin at its extreme to turn to yang, extreme cold to give birth to spring, endings to begin again, precisely for the sake of "ceaselessly producing life"--ensuring that life's cycle never stops, that the production of life is never exhausted.
This is the ultimate conclusion of Great Cold's entire philosophy: Great Cold, in the posture of "cold's extreme," "yin's extreme," "ending's extreme," most profoundly and most solemnly proves the Way of Heaven's "ceaseless renewal of life." Precisely because the Way of Heaven ceaselessly renews life, the coldest Great Cold must lead to the warm Start of Spring (extreme cold gives birth to spring), and the last Great Cold must connect to the first Start of Spring (ending is immediately beginning). Great Cold is not the termination of the Way of Heaven's "ceaselessly producing life" but rather its most powerful proof--in the most extreme "ending" and "cold," it gestates, guarantees, and inaugurates the freshest "beginning" and "spring." Extreme cold gives birth to spring; ending and beginning again; life ceaselessly renewed--this is Great Cold; this is the Way of Heaven.
V. Humanity's Recognition and Emulation of "The Way of Ceaseless Life"
Finally, from the Way of Heaven's "ceaseless renewal of life," we return to the human.
What does the "Way of ceaseless life" revealed by Great Cold mean for humanity$20 It means that people too should recognize and emulate this Way of Heaven.
Recognize it--in life's "Great Cold" (the most difficult, coldest, most seemingly hopeless moments), hold firm to the belief in "extreme cold, returning spring" and "when things end, they begin again." Believe that the deepest adversity must have its turning point, the coldest winter must have its end, the greatest "ending" must gestate a new "beginning."
Emulate it--people too should be like the Way of Heaven, "ceaselessly renewing life," "ceaselessly striving for self-improvement." The Zhouyi, Qian hexagram, Image Commentary: "Heaven's course is vigorous; the noble person thereby ceaselessly strives for self-improvement." Facing year's end (Great Cold), one should not sink into stagnation but, like the Way of Heaven's "ending and beginning again," bring the end to good completion, inaugurate the beginning, and embark on new striving without the slightest pause; facing adversity (life's Great Cold), one should not despair or surrender but, like "raptors hunting with fierce swiftness," strive mightily in adversity, seeking life's potential in the most desperate straits.
