From End to Beginning: The Way of Culmination and Return in the Great Cold Solar Term

This article offers a deep reading of Great Cold (Dahan), the final of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms, drawing on pre-Qin Confucian and Daoist philosophy, etymological analysis, and astronomical and phenological traditions. It reveals the dialectic of extreme cold and returning spring, the cyclic principle that every ending harbors a new beginning, and illuminates the late-winter rites of the Grand Nuo exorcism and the clay ox ceremony—inviting the reader into the ancients' cosmic wisdom of 'tracing origins by returning to endings' and the eternal circle of ceaseless renewal.

From End to Beginning: The Way of Culmination and Return in the Great Cold Solar Term

Chapter Nineteen: Great Cold and Start of Spring--Head Meeting Tail, the Circle Closed

I. From "Last" Back to "First": The Completion of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms

As an essay in the Twenty-Four Solar Terms series--and especially as the essay on the "last term," Great Cold--this piece carries a special mission: to close the entire circle and echo the series' "first." Now let us stand at Great Cold (last) for the final, most solemn time, and look back to connect with Start of Spring (first).

The Twenty-Four Solar Terms begin with Start of Spring and end with Great Cold. In our Start of Spring essay, we contemplated the year's "beginning"--east wind thaws the ice, hibernating insects begin to stir, fish swim upward bearing ice on their backs, all things awaken from slumber, a first ray of yang pierces the winter, proclaiming the start of new life. Now in Great Cold, we contemplate the year's "ending"--hens begin to brood, raptors hunt with fierce swiftness, ice on lakes and marshes freezes to the core, all things return to concealment in the utmost yin, the year's vital breath reaches its terminus, yet at that very terminus gestates a new beginning.

See how exquisitely the phenology of these head and tail terms connects! Great Cold's final pentad, "ice frozen to the core" (freezing at its extreme), is immediately followed by Start of Spring's first pentad, "east wind thaws the ice" (freezing begins to dissolve)--"frozen core" and "thawing" are the seamless junction of ice's "extreme" and ice's "reversal." Last and first, ending and beginning, at the juncture of Great Cold and Start of Spring, achieve the most perfect, most seamless connection and closure.

The great circle of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms closes and opens anew at precisely this seam between Great Cold and Start of Spring. We set out from Start of Spring's "first," traveled through a year's birth, growth, harvest, and storage, and arrived at Great Cold's "last"; and Great Cold's "last" carries us back to Start of Spring's "first," inaugurating a new year's cycle. The circle has closed, and opened anew--this is the completion of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms; this is the Way of Heaven's "circulating without peril."

II. The Complete Cycle of "Birth--Growth--Harvest--Storage"

Let us survey one final time the complete cycle of "birth--growth--harvest--storage" across the year, and confirm Great Cold's pivotal position of "closing and inaugurating anew."

Start of Spring through Grain Rain (spring's six terms) is "birth"--all things sprout and emerge, vitality abounds. Start of Summer through Great Heat (summer's six terms) is "growth"--all things flourish in vigorous expansion. Start of Autumn through Frost Descent (autumn's six terms) is "harvest"--all things mature, gather inward. Start of Winter through Great Cold (winter's six terms) is "storage"--all things seal themselves in concealment, returning to root and returning to destiny. And Great Cold is the very last, deepest, most extreme link of this "storage"--it stores the year's vitality in the deepest reaches of yin, storing it as tightly, as fully, as completely as possible.

But Great Cold's "storage" is by no means the termination of the "birth--growth--harvest--storage" cycle; it is precisely the guarantee that the cycle can "begin anew." For "storage" exists for "birth"--having stored next year's seeds, having accumulated next spring's vital energy, when Great Cold's "storage" is complete, Start of Spring's "birth" follows immediately, and the "birth--growth--harvest--storage" cycle begins again. Great Cold's "storage" is both the "closing" of the old cycle and the "gathering of momentum" and "ignition" of the new cycle (beginning from Start of Spring's "birth").

III. Ceaseless Renewal of Life: The Grand Meaning Running Through All Twenty-Four Solar Terms

At this point, the "grand meaning" pervading all Twenty-Four Solar Terms has become unmistakable--it is "ceaseless renewal of life" (sheng sheng bu xi).

The Twenty-Four Solar Terms, from Start of Spring's "birth" to Start of Summer's "growth" to Start of Autumn's "harvest" to Great Cold's closing of "storage," and then to (the new year's) Start of Spring's "birth"... This never-ending cycle of "birth--growth--harvest--storage--birth..." enacts the great symphony of the Way of Heaven's "ceaseless renewal of life." Every solar term is a note in this symphony; and the twenty-four terms linked together compose a song of life that revolves without end, never ceasing.

"Ceaseless renewal of life"--these four characters are the soul of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms, the essence of the Way of Heaven, and the grand meaning that our series, from Start of Spring to Great Cold, from "birth" to "storage," from "first" to "last," has sought to reveal.

IV. The Final Confirmation of Head Meeting Tail

Let us close the circle of head meeting tail with one final confirmation.

Start of Spring's "first" originates from Great Cold's "last"--that first ray of yang piercing the winter at Start of Spring was quietly gestated, quietly guarded, and then solemnly entrusted to Start of Spring by Great Cold in the deepest depths of yin (the yang within Kan, the Lin hexagram's two yang, growing toward Start of Spring's three yang).

Great Cold's "last" fulfills Start of Spring's "first"--Great Cold's utmost sealed concealment (ice frozen to the core, storage nurturing yang) exists precisely so that Start of Spring's emergence (east wind thaws the ice, all things awaken) can unfold vigorously and fully (the fullness of winter's storage fulfills the vigor of spring's birth).

The first finds its source in the last; the last gathers momentum for the first; head meets tail, endings and beginnings mutually generate, cycling without cease, life renewing without end--this is the relationship of Start of Spring and Great Cold, this is the circle of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms, this is the Way of Heaven. We set out from Start of Spring and have returned to Great Cold; and Great Cold's return is a new departure toward Start of Spring. This cycle never stops; this circle forever closes and forever opens.
