Chapter Two: The Astronomical Basis of Minor Heat — The Sun Reaches Ecliptic Longitude 105°
I. Ecliptic Longitude 105°: The Astronomical Coordinate of Minor Heat
How did the ancients determine the precise moment of Minor Heat$19 In the precise language of modern astronomy, Minor Heat is the instant the sun reaches ecliptic longitude 105°. But behind this precise figure lies millennia of patient observation, the ancients gazing upward at the heavens and downward at the earth.
"Ecliptic longitude" refers to the angular position of the sun's course along the ecliptic (the projection onto the celestial sphere of the plane of Earth's orbit around the sun). Taking the vernal equinox as ecliptic longitude zero degrees, each fifteen degrees of the sun's motion corresponds to one solar term. Spring Equinox (0°), Clear and Bright (15°), Grain Rain (30°), Beginning of Summer (45°), Grain Full (60°), Grain in Ear (75°), Summer Solstice (90°), Minor Heat (105°) — fifteen degrees beyond the Summer Solstice comes Minor Heat.
This position of "105°" is extremely significant. It means that Minor Heat follows immediately after the Summer Solstice (90°). The Summer Solstice is the moment when the sun's course reaches the northernmost point of the ecliptic (directly above the Tropic of Cancer), when daylight in the Northern Hemisphere is longest, the sun is highest, the shadow is shortest, and yang energy reaches its extreme. Minor Heat is the first solar term after the Summer Solstice — the sun has already begun to slowly return south from its highest point, daylight has already begun (ever so slightly) to shorten, and yang energy, having already passed its zenith, has begun its downward slope.
This constitutes the core astronomical feature of Minor Heat: yang energy has already passed its extreme, even as the summer swelter is only now blazing up. This appears contradictory — the sun has already begun returning south, so why does it grow hotter still$20 This is precisely the mystery of "concealment" (fu, 伏) and of "the earth's qi accumulating heat" that we shall explore in depth later in this article. But in terms of astronomical coordinates, the position 105° tells us clearly: Minor Heat stands just after the turning point where yang energy, having reached its height, begins to turn — it is the solar term "after the Summer Solstice," the solar term of "flourishing already past its height."
II. Measuring Shadows with Gnomon and Scale: The Oldest Astronomical Instrument
How did the ancients first determine the moments of these solar terms$21 The most basic and most ancient method was observing the sun's shadow.
The "Office of Earth: Da Situ" chapter of the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli) records: "By the method of the earth gnomon, measure the depth of the earth, correct the sun's shadow, and thereby seek the center of the land." The gnomon and scale (guibiao) is one of the oldest astronomical observation instruments in China. A vertically erected "gnomon" (biao, a pole), together with a horizontally placed "scale" (gui, a graduated ruler), together formed a complete astronomical observation system. By measuring the length of the gnomon's shadow at noon, the ancients could precisely judge the sun's altitude and thereby determine the solar terms.
On the day of the Summer Solstice, the noon shadow is shortest, because the sun's position is highest; on the day of the Winter Solstice, the noon shadow is longest, because the sun's position is lowest. The shadow at Minor Heat is just slightly longer than at the Summer Solstice — because the sun has already begun returning south from its highest point. Through years of accumulated observation and recording of the gnomon's shadow, the ancients gradually mastered the pattern of the shadow's change. When they found that the shortest shadow of the Summer Solstice had already passed, and that the noon shadow was beginning to lengthen, ever so slightly, day by day, they knew: yang energy had already touched its ceiling and begun to decline. Minor Heat is marked precisely at this subtle moment when "the shadow is just beginning to lengthen even as the summer swelter is only now blazing up."
Here lies a question worth pondering deeply: the shadow begins to lengthen from the Summer Solstice onward (yang energy declining), while the summer swelter continues to rise all the way to Great Heat — how did the ancients understand this "time lag" between the celestial phenomenon and the climate$22 This question is precisely the astronomical and philosophical root from which the ancients derived the concept of "concealment" (fu), which we shall treat in a dedicated chapter later in this article. Here it suffices to point out: the ancients' fine observation of the shadow allowed them, at a very early stage, to recognize that a delay existed between "the extreme of yang" and "the extreme of heat" — the yang energy in the heavens was already retreating, while the summer heat on the earth was still rising. How profound this insight into the "asynchrony of heaven and earth" truly is!
This insight into the "time lag" carries a still deeper philosophical implication. It taught the ancients that the workings of the Way of Heaven possess a "root" (ben) and a "branch" (mo) — the "root" is the yang energy in the heavens (already past its extreme and retreating), the "branch" is the summer heat on the earth (only now blazing and not yet extreme). The root has already stirred while the branch has not yet responded; the root has already retreated while the branch is only now flourishing — this is precisely the pattern of "a delay existing between root and branch." From this the ancients came to understand: in observing things, one must not look only at the superficial "branch" (the earthly heat blazing, seemingly as though yang energy remains strong), but must penetrate to the deeper "root" (heaven's yang already retreating, the height of flourishing already past). One who can see through the outward flourishing (the heat) to the fundamental exit (the retreat of yang) is one who truly understands "timeliness" (shi). That noon shadow at Minor Heat, lengthening ever so slightly, is precisely the most direct astronomical evidence by which the ancients could perceive that "the root retreats while the branch flourishes," that "the height of flourishing is about to turn" — it silently reminds the heaven-watcher that, beneath the appearance of flourishing at its height, decline has long since quietly begun.
III. The Stars at Dusk and Dawn: The Wisdom of Gazing Upward at the Heavens
Besides the sun's shadow, the ancients also determined the season by observing the position of constellations at dusk and dawn.
The "Canon of Yao" in the Classic of Documents contains an exceedingly important record: "The day is at its longest, and the star is Fire; thereby the height of summer is corrected." In midsummer (around the Summer Solstice), daylight is longest ("the day is at its longest"), and at dusk, the star appearing at the center of the southern sky is "Fire" — that is, the second star of the Heart lunar mansion (Antares, Da Huo, alpha Scorpii, the Great Fire Star). Minor Heat follows immediately upon the Summer Solstice, and at this time the Great Fire Star hangs high in the southern night sky, its red glow visibly blazing.
The Great Fire Star occupied an especially significant place in pre-Qin astronomy. The Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), in the ninth year of Duke Xiang, records: "E Bo of the Taotang clan, Rectifier of Fire, dwelt at Shangqiu and sacrificed to the Great Fire." In high antiquity, a special office called "Rectifier of Fire" was established specifically to observe the rising and setting of the Great Fire Star. In spring, the Great Fire Star appears at dusk in the east ("Fire is seen"); in summer it rises to the zenith; and by the seventh month it begins to sink in the west — the "Seventh Month" ode of the "Airs of Bin" in the Book of Songs opens with the very line "In the seventh month, Fire flows west," where "flows" means to sink, describing how the Great Fire Star begins moving west and downward in the seventh month of the lunar calendar.
This celestial phenomenon bears an extremely profound connection to Minor Heat. Minor Heat falls in the sixth month, when the Great Fire Star still hangs high at the zenith, but this is already its final glory before flowing west. When the ancients saw the Great Fire Star rise to its greatest height, about to begin its westward flow, they knew: though the virtue of Fire is at its height, the height of its flourishing is about to turn, and the severity of autumn already waits not far off. This forms a celestial echo with the theme of Minor Heat, "knowing withdrawal at the height of flourishing" — the Great Fire Star in the heavens, just like the summer heat on the earth, stands at that critical threshold of "flourishing at its height and about to withdraw."
IV. From the "Two Equinoxes and Two Solstices" to the "Four Beginnings" to the "Twenty-Four": The Refinement of the Solar Term System
In the earliest system of solar terms, there were only the "two equinoxes and two solstices" — the Spring Equinox, the Autumn Equinox, the Summer Solstice, and the Winter Solstice. These four terms were the easiest to determine through astronomical observation: two equinoctial points (day and night of equal length) and two solstitial points (the shadow at its longest and shortest). Later, the "four beginnings" were added — the Beginning of Spring, the Beginning of Summer, the Beginning of Autumn, and the Beginning of Winter — dividing the year into eight nodes.
But eight nodes still proved too coarse for the fine demands of agricultural production. So the ancients further subdivided the intervals between the two solstices and the two equinoxes. After the Summer Solstice, Minor Heat and Great Heat were distinguished; after the Winter Solstice, Minor Cold and Great Cold were distinguished. This naming convention of pairing "great" and "minor" itself embodies the ancients' subtle grasp of "degree" and "process" — the same qi (heat or cold), in the course of its development, is divided into two stages: "about to reach its extreme" (minor) and "having reached its extreme" (great).
The "Treatise on Seasonal Training" (Shixun Jie) of the Lost Book of Zhou (Yi Zhoushu) gives a detailed phenological record for each solar term. Regarding Minor Heat, it records: "On the day of Minor Heat, warm wind arrives. Five days later, crickets take shelter by the wall. Five days later, hawks begin to practice striking." Warm wind arrives, crickets take shelter beneath walls and eaves, and hawks begin to practice combat — these three phenological signs were regarded by the ancients as markers of the arrival of Minor Heat. We shall examine each of them in depth in the dedicated chapter on phenology later in this article. What must be emphasized here is that the ancients determined Minor Heat through the cross-observation of celestial phenomena (the sun's shadow, the stars) and phenological signs (wind, insects, birds), embodying a plain yet rigorous empirical spirit — they relied on no single indicator alone, but synthesized the multiple signals of heaven, earth, and living creatures to grasp the true rhythm of the movement of heaven-and-earth's qi.
V. The Pointing of the Northern Dipper and the "Month of Wei": Another System of Timekeeping
Besides the sun's shadow and the stars at dusk and dawn, the ancients possessed yet another system for determining the time, based on the direction in which the handle of the Northern Dipper pointed, called "dipper positioning" (doujian). The "Cyclical Flow" (Huanliu) chapter of the Heguanzi contains an exceedingly famous passage: "When the Dipper's handle points east, all under heaven is spring; when it points south, all under heaven is summer; when it points west, all under heaven is autumn; when it points north, all under heaven is winter."
This system of "dipper positioning" divides the year into twelve Earthly Branches (zi, chou, yin, mao, chen, si, wu, wei, shen, you, xu, hai), with the Dipper's handle pointing to one branch each month. The sixth month, in which Minor Heat falls, corresponds to "Wei" — hence the sixth month is also called the "Month of Wei." The Dipper's handle pointing to the south-southwest position of "Wei" marks precisely the direction in which summer is about to reach its end, turning from south (summer) toward west (autumn).
Why does "dipper positioning" matter$23 Because the Northern Dipper is visible year-round (it does not sink below the horizon across most of China), and its handle rotates with the seasons, forming a natural, ceaselessly turning "clock in the heavens." By observing the direction of the Dipper's handle, the ancients could judge the general season without any instrument at all. The handle's pointing to "Wei" is one of the celestial coordinates of Minor Heat (the height of summer). And the position of "Wei," lying between due south ("Wu," midsummer) and due west ("You," mid-autumn), corresponds precisely to the transitional nature of late summer, "turning from summer to autumn, Fire withdrawing and Metal arriving" — this once again forms a profound celestial echo with the withdrawal of the hexagram Dun and the pivotal turning of the long summer discussed earlier. These several systems of timekeeping the ancients possessed (the sun's shadow, the stars, dipper positioning) together confirm, from different angles, the core characteristic of Minor Heat: "the height of flourishing about to turn."
