Chapter 2: The Astronomical Foundation of Guyu — The Sun Arriving at 30° of Ecliptic Longitude

Section 1: 30° of Ecliptic Longitude — The Astronomical Coordinate of Late Spring

Guyu has a precise astronomical definition: the moment when the sun reaches 30° of ecliptic longitude. To understand this, one must first understand what "ecliptic longitude" is.

The so-called ecliptic is the apparent annual path of the sun across the celestial sphere—that is, viewed from Earth, the great circle that the sun traces against the backdrop of the stars over the course of a year. Dividing this circle into 360 equal degrees, with the vernal equinox point taken as 0° of ecliptic longitude, each 15° that the sun "travels" marks one solar term. Thus: the Spring Equinox is 0°, Qingming is 15°, Guyu is 30°, Start of Summer is 45°, and so on. The twenty-four solar terms divide the ecliptic precisely into twenty-four equal segments of 15° each.

Guyu stands at 30° of ecliptic longitude, meaning that since the Spring Equinox, the sun has already traveled thirty degrees along the ecliptic. This is a position laden with meaning: it is fully two solar terms removed from the equinox point of equal day and night; the sun's subsolar point is steadily moving northward; in the Northern Hemisphere, daylight grows longer with each passing day, the noon sun climbs higher with each passing day, and the earth receives more light and heat with each passing day. This is precisely why the season of Guyu sees the earth's qi turn warm and the frosty cold cease—all of it is the necessary result of the sun's thirty-degree northward journey.

It is worth asking: the ancients had no concept of "ecliptic longitude"—how, then, did they determine Guyu$11 The answer lies in the shadow of the sun. A vertical "gnomon" (biao, a pole) set into the ground, paired with a horizontal "gui" (a measuring scale), together formed China's most ancient astronomical instrument—the gnomon and scale (guibiao). The "Offices of Earth: Office of the Minister of Education" in the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli) records: "By the method of the earth-gui, measure the depth of the earth, rectify the sun's shadow, and thereby seek the center of the earth."

By measuring the length of the gnomon's shadow at the exact moment of noon, the ancients could precisely determine the sun's altitude, and thereby fix the solar term. On the Winter Solstice the noon shadow is longest; on the Summer Solstice it is shortest; and the length of the noon shadow at Guyu falls between that of the Spring Equinox and Start of Summer—shorter than the equinox, longer than Start of Summer. Day after day, year after year, the ancients recorded the lengthening and shortening of that shadow, until at last they precisely marked out this late-spring juncture at which rain moistens and brings forth the hundred grains.

Section 2: The Position of Late Spring — Why Is Guyu the Last Solar Term of Spring$12

Guyu is the last of the six solar terms of spring (Start of Spring, Rain Water, Awakening of Insects, Spring Equinox, Qingming, and Guyu). After it comes Start of Summer. This "final act" position endows Guyu with a special dual identity.

On one hand, it is the grand conclusion of spring. Spring begins with the "sprouting stirrings" of Start of Spring, passes through the "thawing" of Rain Water, the "insects' awakening" of Awakening of Insects, the "equal division" of Spring Equinox, and the "clarity and brightness" of Qingming, arriving at Guyu as spring reaches its deepest point, the blossoms nearing their end, in the very heart of late spring. By this time, the tasks proper to spring—sprouting, sending out branches, blossoming, sowing—have for the most part already been accomplished or are being completed; the qi of spring is nearing its fullness.

On the other hand, it is also the prelude to summer. One more solar term further, and the sun reaches 45° of ecliptic longitude, entering Start of Summer, at which point the ten thousand things turn from spring's "birth" into summer's "growth." Guyu thus stands at the threshold of the meeting of spring and summer—looking back at the whole of spring's cultivation on one side, and looking forward to the grand growth soon to come on the other. It is the pivot linking what came before to what follows, the summation of "birth" and the overture to "growth."

This position of "lateness" carries particular weight within the pre-Qin conception of time. The ancients did not regard the four seasons as four boxes of equal length and equal nature, but rather as a single life process with a beginning, a continuation, a turning, and a culmination. The "lateness" of each season is never a simple ending, but rather a "transition" and a "gestation" toward the next season. Guyu's position as late spring is like dusk's position as the close of day—it is not the extinguishing of light, but the yielding and gestation of light toward another, more blazing light (summer).

Section 3: The Meeting of Spring and Summer — A Philosophy of Liminality and Transition

The four characters "the meeting of spring and summer" (春夏之交) appear plain, yet they are in fact one of the most crucial keys to understanding Guyu.

Why does this "meeting" (交) matter so much$13 Because in pre-Qin thought, the most profound changes tend to occur precisely at points of "meeting"—in the liminal zone where two states touch, alternate, and surge against each other. Among the sixty-four hexagrams of the Book of Changes, what matters most is "timing" (shi) and "position" (wei); and all hexagram transformations and line changes are, in essence, depictions of this "meeting"—the transitional moment of yin and yang's waxing and waning. Guyu, as the meeting of spring and summer, is precisely the liminal point at which the qi of Heaven and Earth transforms from "the virtue of spring" toward "the virtue of summer."

At this liminal point, the qi of Heaven and Earth displays a subtle tension: the lingering charm of spring still remains—duckweed just sprouting, mulberry leaves still tender, the cuckoo urging the plowing—everywhere still the phenology of spring; yet the first stirrings of summer have already begun—the yang qi about to reach its fullness, the earth's qi turning greatly warm, thunder and rain gradually increasing—everywhere already exuding the breath of summer. Spring and summer briefly overlap and transition here at Guyu. This state of "meeting" is neither pure spring nor pure summer, but a transitional condition of "about to change yet not yet changed, about to end yet not yet ended."

The ancients held a particular reverent caution toward this transitional state of "meeting." For it is precisely at the point of "meeting" that things are most subtle and most prone to disorder—the climate is most changeable at this time (hence the saying "in the fourth lunar month, one dresses in confusion" 四月乱穿衣, describing unpredictable weather), and farm work at this time tolerates no error whatsoever.

Thus the teaching of Guyu is, at its root, a "wisdom of the liminal": at the juncture where the old gives way to the new, one must both accord with the imminent new (seizing the rain to sow with urgency, welcoming the coming growth) and properly bring the departing old to a fitting close (letting the frost cease and sending off the cold, concluding the spring plowing). This wisdom—of grasping the proper measure amid transition, of remaining clear-headed at the liminal point—is precisely the deepest astronomical-philosophical legacy that Guyu has bequeathed to later generations.

Section 4: From "the Two Equinoxes and Two Solstices" to "the Twenty-Four Solar Terms" — Guyu's Calendrical Position

To truly understand Guyu's place within the system of solar terms, we must also review how the entire system of solar terms grew step by step more precise, until it finally came to accommodate the solar term "Guyu."

In the most ancient divisions of time, what the ancients first grasped were "the two solstices"—the Summer Solstice and the Winter Solstice. These were the easiest to determine through observation with the gnomon and scale: the shortest noon shadow marks the Summer Solstice, the longest marks the Winter Solstice. The Canon of Yao in the Book of Documents records "the day is long, and the star is Fire Antares—thereby the height of midsummer is rectified" and "the day is short, and the star is the Pleiades—thereby the height of midwinter is rectified," which is precisely the record of the two solstices. Following this came "the two equinoxes"—the Spring Equinox and Autumn Equinox (when day and night are of equal length). "The two equinoxes and two solstices" together form four nodal points, roughly dividing the year into four segments.

However, "the two equinoxes and two solstices" can mark only the "middle" of the four seasons (mid-spring, midsummer, mid-autumn, midwinter), but cannot mark the "beginning" and "end" of the four seasons. And so "the four beginnings" were added—Start of Spring, Start of Summer, Start of Autumn, and Start of Winter, to mark the beginnings of the four seasons. "The two equinoxes and two solstices" plus "the four beginnings" yielded "the eight nodes" (八节), dividing the year into eight segments.

But for the fine calibration of farm work, eight segments still proved too coarse—especially for late spring, this crucial sowing period of "rain giving birth to the hundred grains," which required a still more precise nodal point to mark it out. And so, building upon "the eight nodes," the ancients further subdivided each segment, ultimately forming the twenty-four solar terms—two terms per month, each term spanning roughly fifteen days. Guyu was, precisely through this step-by-step process of refinement, precisely marked into its position after Qingming and before Start of Summer.

This journey from coarseness to precision reveals the fundamental driving force behind the evolution of the solar-term system—the needs of farm work. Why were the ancients not content with "the two equinoxes and two solstices," insisting instead on refining them into twenty-four$14 Precisely because a juncture of farming time as vital to a whole year's livelihood as Guyu had to be precisely marked out, without the slightest room for ambiguity.

That Guyu was able to obtain an independent, precise position within the calendar is itself the ultimate pursuit, by the ancients, of the four characters "respectfully bestowing the seasons upon the people"—they wished to mark out, to within half a month, that rain which "gives birth to the hundred grains," never allowing it to be missed within some vague stretch of time. The history of the refinement of the solar terms is, at its root, a precise science devoted to never missing a rain such as Guyu—a rain upon which survival itself depended.
