A Systematic Survey of Duan-School Blind-Sect Fate Calculation
A systematic survey of Duan-school Blind-Sect (Mangpai) fate calculation, examined through its lineage, guest-and-host framework, substance-and-function framework, structural work (gong), emptiness and solidity, the Ten Gods, image-reading methods, tomb-and-storage palaces, and timing systems — with a clearly bounded comparison to the Ziping pattern method.

Chapter 8 Image-Reading Methods
1. The Inherent Images of Stems and Branches
The inherent images of the stems and branches derive from yin and yang, the five phases, the season, direction, form, and hidden stems. Jia wood is yang wood, and can take the image of standing upright, a beam or pillar, planning, or growth; Yi wood is yin wood, and can take the image of flowers and grass, bending, fiber, or ornamentation. Bing fire is yang fire, leaning toward brightness, transmission, visibility, and heat energy; Ding fire is yin fire, leaning toward lamplight, fineness, writing, or electronic signals. Wu earth leans toward height and thickness, a platform, a building, or bearing a load; Ji earth leans toward fields and gardens, internal management, or containing small, scattered things. Geng metal leans toward hardness, machinery, or the enforcement of rules; Xin metal leans toward fine metalwork, jewels, blades and needles, or aesthetics. Ren water leans toward rivers, flow, transportation, or information networks; Gui water leans toward rain and dew, liquid, the subtle and hidden, or data. All of the above form a repository of image-meanings — one should not, upon seeing a single character, declare a single fixed thing.
The inherent images of the earthly branches carry more of a temporal and spatial character. Zi is deep winter water, midnight, and the beginning of motion; Wu is fire at its height, high noon, and prominence. Mao and You are the eastern and western gates, marking a fine transition; Yin and Shen commonly carry the image of roads, travel, machinery, and rising-and-falling; Si and Hai mark a sharp turn between yin and yang; Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are the earth of the four seasons, carrying the image of storage, transition, and location all at once. The specific meaning still depends on the hidden stems: Zi hides Gui; Chou hides Ji, Gui, and Xin; Yin hides Jia, Bing, and Wu; Mao hides Yi; Chen hides Wu, Yi, and Gui; Si hides Bing, Wu, and Geng; Wu hides Ding and Ji; Wei hides Ji, Ding, and Yi; Shen hides Geng, Ren, and Wu; You hides Xin; Xu hides Wu, Xin, and Ding; Hai hides Ren and Jia. The hidden stems are components contained within the branch — one should not treat every hidden stem as though it were already revealed and independently performing structural work.
2. The Image of the Ten Gods and the Image of the Palace Positions
The Ten Gods supply a category of relationship. Wealth is a resource one can command; the officer-and-hurter is institutional pressure; the Seal is a receiving protection; food-and-hurter is output capability; companions-and-robbers are execution by one's own kind. Palace positions supply a domain of life: the Year Pillar commonly relates to ancestors, early life, distant places, and the macro environment; the Month Pillar commonly relates to parents, the platform of one's upbringing, the workplace, and the social gateway; the Day Stem is the person; the Day Branch is the body's immediate surroundings, the core of the household, and the marriage palace; the Hour Pillar commonly relates to children, results, later life, the private domain, and future extension.
Palace positions are not mutually exclusive zones. Parents are not found only in Year and Month; the spouse is not decided by the Day Branch alone; children too cannot be read from the Hour Pillar alone while ignoring the relevant Ten Gods. A palace position is like an address, a Ten God is like a relational identity, and structural work is like the action that actually occurs. When the three agree, the image is most concentrated; when the three contradict one another, the strength of the reading should be lowered and an intermediary sought.
3. Layered Image-Reading
Layered image-reading can be carried out as a "four-tier funnel." The first tier examines the physical nature of the five phases; the second tier examines the social meaning of the Ten God; the third tier examines which palace position it belongs to; the fourth tier examines the action of the combination. For instance, Xin metal represents fineness, standards, and instruments; if it is the Direct Officer relative to a Jia Day Master, sits in the heavenly stem of the Month Pillar as the social gateway, and is received and generated into the host position by the Seal in the Month Branch, one may give priority to the image of a profession, qualification review, or fine-grained management — one should not conclude "jewelry" merely because it is Xin metal, nor conclude "civil servant" merely because it is the Direct Officer.
Take another example: Ding fire hidden within Wu, serving as a given Day Master's food-and-hurter, where Wu is also clashed by Zi in the guest position. At the five-phase level, this is water clashing fire; at the Ten God level, this is some external thing striking at output or production; at the palace-position level, it may touch on the household, the body, or children; at the level of action, it is sudden change, movement, or the opposition of cold and hot. Only once the Luck or Annual Pillar again reaches Zi or Wu does this move from a long-term structure into a matched event. The value of layering lies in allowing multiple possible images to converge step by step.
4. Combination Images
A combination image is not the sum of individual characters but new meaning produced by the relationship itself. Food-and-hurter generating Wealth is ability converted into a product and income; the Hurter and the Seal mutually generating each other is pressure converted, via qualification and platform, into official authority; Wealth and the Seal in mutual conflict is market resources clashing with document-based protection; companions-and-robbers controlling Wealth is one's own kind organizing, competitive action, and command of a resource; the Seal controlling food-and-hurter may either be education regulating talent or rules suppressing expression. Whether one reads the combination positively or negatively depends on whether it completes the host position's structural work.
Self-combination within a pillar and combination between the heavenly and earthly levels also often form tight images. For instance, when a pillar's heavenly stem forms a covert combination with a hidden stem in its own seated branch, one may read this as an internal entanglement within that palace position — though the precise definition of a "covert combination" (an he) varies across different textbooks, and one should state one's rule before using it. Conflict between the heavenly and earthly levels can be read as a conflict between exterior and interior: an outward, nominal appearance that does not match the internal reality. Combination images most need to guard against unlimited extension — every added layer of image should be traceable back to a clear, concrete stem-and-branch fact.
5. The Boundaries of Image-Reading
The first boundary of image-reading is polysemy. The same "Seal" can be a mother, a house, a certificate, or an institution; without the background of the question and the constraint of the combination, no single reading can be uniquely determined. The second boundary is cultural change over time. Ancient images such as the Traveling Horse, the Seal-and-Ribbon, and land-and-dwelling may map, in the modern world, onto transportation, certification, an organizational platform, or real property — but such mapping requires explanation, not merely a change of noun. The third boundary is verification bias: if a fortune-teller throws out ten similar images at once, one of them is likely to hit regardless, and this does not mean the rule itself is precise.
High-quality image-reading should therefore follow the principle of "few, but well-grounded." Give the highest-probability domain first, then state the alternative images; state the structural fact first — such as "this career depends on qualification and platform" — and only cautiously narrow it to a specific industry; keep any inference that has not received feedback as a hypothesis, and do not disguise a correction made after feedback as though it had been predicted beforehand. Image-reading is the most flexible and also the most easily uncontrolled part of the Duan-school system — the more flexible it is, the more its grounds must be recorded.
