XIV. The Auxiliary Use of Eight Mansions in a Commercial Shop

1. East Four Houses and West Four Houses

Eight Mansions (bazhai) sorts houses into East Four Houses and West Four Houses according to the trigram their sitting mountain belongs to. Kan houses, Li houses, Zhen houses, and Xun houses belong to the East Four Houses; Qian houses, Kun houses, Gen houses, and Dui houses belong to the West Four Houses. Following the same Great Wandering Years (dayounian) rule, each direction is then sorted into the four favorable categories — life-generating (shengqi), heavenly physician (tianyi), extended years (yannian), and the seat itself (fuwei) — and the four unfavorable categories — dead of destiny (juemin), five ghosts (wugui), six killings (liusha), and calamity and harm (huohai). These names carry strong overtones of fortune and misfortune, and in practice should be understood as a positional ranking internal to this particular system, not a guarantee of a real-world outcome.

A shop's house type is first determined by its sitting direction. For instance, sitting north facing south makes it a Kan house; sitting south facing north makes it a Li house. Once the house trigram is fixed, the eight directions should be laid out by that same one set of rise-and-fall rules — one must not determine the house type by the door's facing at one moment and by the sitting mountain at another. The door's position, the main business point, the stove, and the office may all be considered against the four favorable and four unfavorable directions, but the final judgment must still be checked against form school, the Xuankong chart, and actual function.

2. The Traditional Imagery of the Four Favorable Directions

Life-generating qi (shengqi) is commonly used for flourishing activity, generative growth, and expansion, suiting functions that need vitality such as the door, sales, and the main display; heavenly physician (tianyi) draws on stability, care, and restoration, and can be referenced for health services, staff rest, or operational support; extended years (yannian) draws on harmony, continuity, and relationships, suiting negotiation and member relations; the seat itself (fuwei) draws on settledness and accumulation, suiting bookkeeping, study, and a relatively quiet spot.

These are only traditional readings. If the life-generating direction turns out in reality to be a windowless dead corner, forcing the main sales area there may not actually work; if the seat-itself direction happens to have the main door and an escalator, it will in fact be constantly in motion, and cannot be forced into the label of "stillness" either. What Eight Mansions supplies is a positional tendency, not a substitute for the facts of the actual configuration.

3. The Traditional Handling of the Four Unfavorable Directions

Dead of destiny, five ghosts, six killings, and calamity and harm are commonly used to place relatively secondary functions that can be suppressed or allowed to drain away — storage, the restroom, or an equipment room — but this convention, too, cannot be applied mechanically. A toilet needs genuine plumbing, and an equipment room has real attributes of noise, fire, and electricity; moving either purely to "suppress an unfavorable direction" into an unsafe spot does more harm than good.

Tradition does hold the view that "an unfavorable direction is better kept quiet and restrained," which can mean reducing strong moving water, major openings, and a long-term core seat there; if the main door unavoidably falls in a so-called unfavorable direction, one should then look at the form outside the door, the fine mountain the door sits on, and whether the Xuankong star chart there is usable, and adjust through Five Phases pass-through and the way the interior receives it. A single unfavorable label from Eight Mansions should never be a reason to seal a door or shut down business.

4. The Calculation and Scope of Use of the East and West Four Destinies

The East and West Four Destinies derive a person's destiny trigram (mingua) from their birth year; traditional calculation methods differ somewhat between men and women, and the cutoff at the Start of Spring (lichun) across a year boundary must also be made explicit. Those whose destiny trigram is Kan, Li, Zhen, or Xun belong to the East Four Destinies; those whose is Qian, Kun, Gen, or Dui belong to the West Four Destinies. A common use is to match the seat and working orientation of the main proprietor to the favorable directions of their destiny trigram.

A commercial space involves an investor, a manager, staff, and customers all at once, and it is simply impossible to satisfy every one of their destiny trigrams simultaneously. A sounder approach is to apply the destiny trigram only to the fixed seat or long-term operating point of the principal decision-maker, and to rank it below form school, the house chart, and safety. A staff rotation counter or a public entryway should not be repeatedly renovated around any one person's destiny trigram.

Birth information touches on privacy, and should only be collected with consent and kept to what is necessary. Where the exact cutoff of a birth year cannot be confirmed, there is no need to force a calculation. Matching destiny to house is a principle internal to Eight Mansions — it does not mean that people of the same destiny type must all choose the same shop orientation.

5. What to Do When Eight Mansions and Xuankong Conflict

Eight Mansions centers on the directions of the house trigram and is relatively static; Xuankong brings in the construction period and the flying stars, emphasizing change over time. It is entirely normal for the two to conflict. This article's order of handling is: address any serious problem in the exterior form school first; then let Xuankong examine the relation between strongly active points such as the door and path and the current period; then use Eight Mansions to screen among candidate positions that are otherwise equally matched; and let a personal destiny trigram serve only as a final, minor adjustment.

For example, if two candidate register positions are both well supported in form and both usable on the chart, and one of them additionally matches the manager's favorable destiny-trigram direction, that one can be given priority; but if the favorable destiny-trigram direction instead has its back to the door with no support and falls into a strongly inauspicious combination, it should not be adopted. In this way each system keeps to its own proper level of function, with no need to declare that one entirely overrules the other.

6. The Limits of Eight Mansions

Each of the eight directions spans forty-five degrees, a far coarser resolution than the Twenty-Four Mountains; the three facings Bing, Wu, and Ding, all classed together as "south-facing," fall into the same house trigram, yet may carry quite different Xuankong charts. Eight Mansions also expresses the passage of time under the Three Cycles and Nine Periods far less than Xuankong does, and so is not well suited to carrying, on its own, the full judgment of a commercial shop across the Ninth Period, 2024 to 2043.

Its value lies in being concise, stable, and convenient for an initial screening; its limit lies in its coarse granularity and the difficulty, in a public space used by many people, of ever fully matching every destiny to the house. Stating this limit honestly, if anything, restores Eight Mansions to its proper place, rather than letting eight labels stand in for the whole shop.

7. A Template for Recording Eight Mansions on Site

A practical record can be written out in sequence: the building's adopted sitting-facing, its house trigram, the distribution of fortune and misfortune across the eight directions, which direction holds the main and secondary doors, which direction holds the register and the stove, whether the main proprietor's destiny trigram is being applied, where it agrees or conflicts with the Xuankong chart, and the final decision. Beside each item, a line of on-site fact should be attached — for example, "although the extended-years direction is favorable, this spot is a fire-safety anteroom, so it is not used for the counter."

Recording it this way brings two benefits. First, it keeps one from quietly switching the basis used to determine the house type partway through an explanation. Second, it lets the reader understand which parts are Eight Mansions judgments and which are real-world constraints. If the door is changed or the main proprietor changes, only the affected layer needs updating, without tearing down and redoing the whole analysis.

8. The Old Framework of Door, Master, and Stove in Eight Mansions

Traditional yang-dwelling fengshui (yangzhai) often emphasizes the door, the master, and the stove (men, zhu, zao). Applied to a commercial shop, "the master" can be interpreted as the main operational core or the proprietor's long-term position, rather than a bedroom in a residence. Whether the door and the master generate each other favorably, and whether the stove sits well, can serve as an auxiliary observation, but a restaurant's cooking fire, a retail register, and an office's main seat serve different functions, and should not be forced into one single, universal table.

One must especially avoid placing the stove in an Eight Mansions unfavorable direction purely by the label while ignoring smoke exhaust. Whether the stove can go in a given spot must first be judged by the gas piping, fire-separation distance, grease-exhaust treatment, and staff workflow, and only then by that palace's generation and control relations. If the divinatory arts are applied apart from actual use, the same "favorable direction" can end up assigned to the door, the stove, the register, and the spirit tablet all at once, creating a scramble for the same piece of space.

9. Summary: Eight Mansions Is a Sieve, Not the Final Verdict

For a commercial shop, Eight Mansions is best suited to answering "among several roughly comparable positions, which one better suits this house or its fixed user" — it is not suited to answering, on its own, "will this shop definitely flourish financially." Placing it after the sitting-facing has already been fixed and the exterior and interior forms already recorded lets one draw on its convenience without letting it override the Three Cycles time-period system or the real doors and paths.

If the sitting direction cannot be reliably fixed on site, Eight Mansions likewise has no basis to be calculated at all. In that case, one should return to re-measuring the shopfront, the building's direction, and the level at which qi is received, and leave the matter recorded as unknown, rather than temporarily substituting the direction the proprietor happens to be facing. A rigorous blank is worth more than one arbitrarily declared favorable direction.
