XVI. The Lower Cycle's Ninth Period: 2024 to 2043

1. The Traditional Meaning of Nine Purple, Li Fire, Governing the Period

Nine Purple belongs to Fire, corresponding to the Post-Heaven Li trigram, the south, manifest brightness, refinement, celebration, and dissemination. Entering the Ninth Period, tradition holds that Nine Purple shifts from life-generating to currently governing, and where it finds a door and water in the house chart, with the form in agreement, it is more readily regarded as usable. Commercially, this is often associated with brand display, video and imagery, aesthetic experience, cultural content, and swift prominence — but these are only extensions of its symbolic meaning, not investment advice for any particular trade.

Li is Fire, and also carries a side of excessive brightness, excessive heat, insubstantiality, and impatience. If a shop already has screens, lighting, open flame, and red-purple colors heavily concentrated, adding still more Fire on the pretext of "the Ninth Period calls for supplementing Fire" may push the Five Phases toward excess dryness. The real task of the Ninth Period is to identify which palace Nine Purple occupies in the specific house chart, whether it is the mountain star or the facing star, and whether it finds its proper form — not to repaint the entire shop red across the board.

2. The Use of Nine Purple Within the Ninth Period

Where the Nine Purple facing star falls on the door, a path, an open area, or moving water, and its relation with the star sharing its palace is usable, tradition generally regards this as more consistent with putting a flourishing facing to use. The Nine Purple mountain star is best met with solid support and calm stability; if it instead falls at an empty doorway or where a road rushes at it, the form fails to match the mountain. The mountain star and the facing star must always be examined separately — one cannot call a palace flourishing simply because a "nine" appears in it.

If Nine Purple shares a palace with Earth stars such as Five Yellow or Two Black, one must analyze the relation of Fire generating Earth — Fire may end up feeding an already inauspicious Earth. If it shares a palace with Wood stars such as Three Jade or Four Green, Wood can generate Fire, but too much Wood and Fire together also carries an image of disputes and impatience. Meeting the Water star One White brings different conditions, depending on whether it forms "water and fire completing each other" or "water and fire at war." Meeting the Metal stars Six White or Seven Red, Fire controls Metal, and the outcome depends on their relative flourishing and decline and the form. Judging the combination always matters more than labeling a single star in isolation.

3. The Ninth Period's Preference in Exterior Configuration

Li Fire favors brightness, but the "brightness" of a bright hall includes openness and clarity, not merely strong light. If the facing direction has an open area, an upright answering feature, and a steady flow of people, it more readily takes up the flourishing qi; a glass curtain wall reflecting harsh sunlight, a giant flickering screen, or a dense cluster of spires may instead push the Fire image too far. Whether moderate moving water to the south can be used depends on the facing-star chart — one cannot simply say Water controls Fire and therefore it is unsuitable.

The Ninth Period still requires "sheltering the wind and gathering the qi." Rapid dissemination and high exposure are modern associations drawn from the image of Li, but traditional commercial fengshui would not, for that reason, endorse every door standing wide open with the whole shop left without support. Manifestation and concealment should come in pairs: the brand displayed clearly up front, the bookkeeping and inventory settled and secure at the back; customers arriving quickly still need a bright hall and a counter to receive them.

4. An Approach to Adjusting an Old Eighth-Period Shop in the Ninth Period

Step one, do not rush to remove every original Eight White arrangement. First check whether Eight White, in the new period, is the mountain star, the facing star, or merely a background element of the period chart, and whether it forms a stack of Earth qi together with Five Yellow and Two Black. Step two, find the palace where the house chart's Nine Purple sits, and check whether it can be taken up through lighting, activation, display, or the door and path. Step three, observe the palace of One White as the distant life-generating star, and set it aside for long-term planning. Step four, reduce activation that is no longer suited to the times, rather than suppressing anything the moment Eight White appears.

For example, if the original register sat in the palace of the Eight White facing star, and after entering the Ninth Period the form still offers support and the door and path remain reasonable, it can continue to serve as the settled position for closing transactions; meanwhile, the palace where Nine Purple finds its use can be given over to brand display and drawing in traffic, without forcibly moving every fixture. What tradition calls "carrying forward what came before while opening what comes next" is expressed here through a redivision of function.

5. The Limits of Reading Trades by the Ninth Period's Imagery

Trades associated with the image of Fire traditionally include lighting, energy, imagery and video, beauty services, cultural dissemination, and food-service cooking; the Li trigram is also linked to the eye, ritual propriety, civilization, and attachment. Some claim on this basis that such trades are bound to flourish for the whole twenty years, which overreaches the reasoning. A trade is shaped by policy, technology, supply and demand, and competitive cycles — the imagery of a period can only serve as a cultural observation.

Shops within the very same trade also carry different Five Phases: a hotpot restaurant shows both Fire and Water together; a coffee shop has both Fire and Wood; a jewelry store has Metal and Fire reflecting each other; a bookstore combines Wood, Fire, and Earth. Putting the layout to use must always return to the specific space and chart — a trade label can never substitute for an actual survey.
