XIX. Flourishing Mountain and Flourishing Facing, Mountain Ascending Water Descending, and the Double-Star Patterns

1. Flourishing Mountain, Flourishing Facing

When the currently governing mountain star flies to the sitting direction, and behind the sitting position one finds height, solidity, and quiet support; and the currently governing facing star flies to the facing direction, and in front one finds water, a path, low ground, openness, and door qi — tradition calls this "flourishing mountain, flourishing facing" (wangshan wangxiang). Commercially this can be read as personnel and wealth-use each finding their proper place. But the name is only the starting point of the chart type — if what lies behind the sitting position is solid yet oppressive, or if what lies in front of the facing is water that is a reverse bow and polluted, the form and qi are still far from perfect.

Flourishing mountain, flourishing facing also does not mean every one of the chart's eight outer palaces is auspicious. A side door, the stove, or the toilet may still fall into a combination that calls for caution, and the annual star will further trigger different palaces from year to year. The accurate statement is "the main pattern of mountain and facing has found its timing and place," with each palace then adjusted individually — and it can never be a promise that every business occupying this pattern will profit.

2. Mountain Ascending, Water Descending

Where the currently governing facing star flies instead to the high, solid area behind the sitting position, this is called "the water star ascending the mountain"; where the currently governing mountain star flies instead to the low, active area in front of the facing, this is called "the mountain star descending into water." When both are displaced at once, this is generally called together "mountain ascending, water descending" (shangshan xiashui). Tradition holds that both wealth and people lose their proper place, but one must still check whether a reversed configuration — such as "empty at the sitting, full at the facing" — might work with it instead.

An urban building sometimes has open ground with water behind the sitting position and a tall, solid building pressing in front of the facing — precisely the reverse of the usual mountain-and-water arrangement. If the chart likewise happens to call for exactly this reversed form, tradition may discuss it separately as a matching pattern. So one cannot judge rigidly by "the rear must always be high, the front must always be low." What is called "mountain" and "water" here is really the movement-and-stillness, high-and-low quality that the star's nature requires — what actually applies on the ground depends on the specific chart.

A shop caught in the pattern of mountain ascending, water descending cannot necessarily be fully reversed just by placing a fake rockery or a cup of water. First make use of what is real: put the active qi entrance in whichever palace has a usable facing star, and put the main seat and rear support in whichever palace has the better mountain star; where the overall facing cannot be changed, find local uses instead, and reduce strong activation in the misaligned palace. A small symbolic object carries far less weight than the building's own exterior configuration.

3. Double Stars Meeting the Facing

When the currently governing mountain star and facing star both gather at the facing direction, this is called "double stars meeting the facing" or "double stars arriving at the facing." The facing direction then needs water nearby to bring out the facing star and a mountain further off to support the mountain star at the same time — an ideal form can be understood as "water near, mountain far; low first, then high": a door, a path, and a bright hall close by, with an upright answering feature farther out. If there is only a high wall pressed right against the door, both stars become confined; if it is an empty expanse of rushing water, the mountain star has nothing to rely on.

A commercial shop can form a layering of "active in front, still behind" toward the facing direction: the entrance and a low display take up the facing star, while a stable background or brand wall a little further back takes up the mountain star. But this remains only a small interior form, and should not be exaggerated into changing the entire exterior configuration. Double stars meeting the facing is generally regarded as carrying potential for both flourishing wealth and stable people, though one must still examine the register, the stove, and staff positions palace by palace.

4. Double Stars Meeting the Sitting

When the mountain star and facing star, both flourishing, gather instead at the sitting direction, this is called "double stars meeting the sitting" or "double stars arriving at the mountain." The sitting direction needs solid support to bring out the mountain star, while also needing some moderate water movement to activate the facing star — an ideal form can take "mountain first, then water" or a combined pattern where a passage runs behind the sitting position. In an ordinary shop, what lies behind the sitting direction is usually a wall and the back area, so the facing star easily becomes confined, and the proprietor should look for another usable facing-star palace elsewhere in the chart to open a door and draw in traffic.

If there happens to be a back door, a parking area, or a road right behind the shop, this should not automatically be read as qi leaking away — it may in fact be able to take up the sitting direction's facing star; but the back door must still be managed as clearly secondary, and must not run straight through with the front door. Double stars meeting the sitting is often summarized as "flourishing for people but not for wealth" — but this is only the typical reading, not a verdict fixed for every shop.

5. Linked Pearls, Combining to Ten, and Other Named Patterns

Xuankong also has patterns such as the Parent Three-General Trigrams (fumu sanbangua), Linked Pearls (lianzhu), and Combining to Ten (hesh), and different schools weigh them differently. This article only offers the governing principle: a named pattern must hold true across the complete chart, matched by the exterior form — one cannot simply pick two palaces whose numbers happen to sum to ten and declare that the whole chart "combines to ten." When such a pattern is genuinely applied, one must state clearly whether it is the mountain star combining with the period star, the facing star combining with the period star, palace by palace, or some other specific convention.

The function of a named pattern is to summarize the relations across the chart — it is not a pass allowing one to skip the palace-by-palace review. Even where the whole chart shows some coherent relation, if the palace holding the main door is being clashed, or the stove's fire is activating a sha, these must still be dealt with. A commercial report should be written in four layers — "main pattern, key palace, actual form, adjustment" — so that a string of technical names never overshadows the actual site.
