XXIV. Monthly Flying Stars: Short-Term Rhythm and Business Scheduling

1. The Monthly Star Changes with the Solar Terms

The monthly flying star generally takes the solar-term month (jieqi yue) as its boundary, rather than switching neatly on the first of each calendar month. The Tiger month begins near the Start of Spring, the Rabbit month near the Awakening of Insects, and so on in sequence. The method for deriving which star enters the center for a given month is tied to the group the year's branch belongs to, and different schools' reference tables may differ in small conventions — one should use a single consistent almanac or plotting rule, and never mix tables.

The monthly chart is shorter-lived than the annual chart, and suits scheduling promotions, small renovation actions, equipment maintenance, and the specific month of an opening — it does not suit major demolition and construction for the sake of a single month's star. Its role is to amplify or ease the annual-and-house combination: when the monthly star lands together with the same kind of star from the annual chart and the house chart in a highly active palace, tradition pays closer attention; when the monthly star forms a pass-through, one can use that month to complete a suitable matter.

2. The Order for Reading the Three Overlaid Charts

First read the house chart's mountain-facing relation to judge the palace's long-term function; then read the annual star to judge the year's backdrop; and finally read the monthly star to judge the short-term trigger. For example, if the register's palace in the base chart already has Metal at war with Wood, and the annual star Three Jade Wood arrives while the monthly star Seven Red Metal also arrives, the image of conflict intensifies, and tradition would suggest strengthening bookkeeping checks, communication, and collision prevention that month, and reducing metallic noise there — it would not directly predict a theft.

If the main door's palace has a flourishing facing star that finds water in the base chart, and Nine of the year meets One of the month, one needs to look at the relation between Water and Fire and any Wood qi in between acting as a pass-through. If the flow of people outside the door is clear and gentle, ordinary customer greeting is enough — one should not further amplify both a water feature and strong red lighting at once, which would only intensify the clash. The more complex the overlaid chart becomes, the simpler the arrangement should be.

3. Using the Monthly Chart to Choose a "Window"

If a plan exists to adjust the register sometime within the year, one can first select months in which the annual star does not heavily control the base chart, and then proceed to choosing the specific date. If a plan exists to replace the signage or the lighting, one can avoid months where a Fire-generating-Earth sha overlays. Here the month serves only as a first-level screen — the actual construction permit, supply chain, and business schedule matter more in practice.

Missing a so-called auspicious month does not mean the whole year is unusable for action. Traditional date selection is about weighing trade-offs — one can choose a good day and hour within a second-best month, and manage things through the sequence of construction. Indefinitely delaying a business decision while waiting for a perfect chart runs contrary to commercial reality.

4. A Monthly Review Need Not Mean Moving Things Around Frequently

Moving the register, the fish tank, or a large cabinet every single month disrupts stability, and may also repeatedly trigger different palaces. Monthly remediation should prioritize light, reversible actions: dimming a strong light somewhere, pausing non-essential hammering, strengthening cleaning and inspection, and adjusting a short-term display. The fixed configuration should still be governed primarily by the house chart and the annual chart.

When recording a monthly change, write down clearly when it was put in place and when it was removed. If an object is used for a given month's remediation, it should be reassessed once the solar term turns over, rather than being forgotten in place for years. Traditional seasonal qi changes by its very nature, and any arrangement should carry a way to exit as well.
