XXIX. Esoteric Layouts for Different Trades

1. Food-Service Shops

A restaurant has four active points all moving at once: the door, the stove, water, and the register. First fix the main door's qi-receiving and the bright hall, and then place the stove's fire in a palace that can vent smoke and whose chart can accommodate Fire, recording the sink and drainage separately as the real water mouth. The front of house should be active without being chaotic, while the back kitchen's strong fire needs to be gathered in. Hotpot and barbecue show a more pronounced Fire nature, while cold drinks and seafood show a more pronounced cold Water nature — even within food service, no single template applies to all.

The register or ordering counter should not be pinched between the order-pickup route and the bussing route. The delivery rider's route should be given its own separate path, so that its urgent movement does not cut straight through the dining hall. The Ninth Period does not mean every restaurant needs more red and more lighting — if the stove's fire there is already strong, more consideration should go to draining it with Earth, balancing it with Metal and Water, and actually cooling the space down.

2. Teahouses, Coffee Shops, and Quiet Seating Spaces

Tea carries Water and Wood, while roasted coffee also carries Fire; overall, the aim is to seek stillness within movement. The entrance can be manifest and bright, while the seating area should be more concealed, avoiding a customer's seat that has its back to the door, sits under a beam, or is pinched between two passages. The moving-water equipment and the bar counter are the high-activity core, and should be placed according to where the facing star falls; a quiet private room places more weight on the mountain star and solid support.

Plants, wood tones, and warm light can form Wood generating Fire, but excessive dampness, scent, and dim lighting turn into yin stagnation. A shop with strong western sun that also uses a great deal of warm red risks tipping its Fire image too far. Cultural decor should follow a single theme, rather than piling up various wealth-attracting objects into visual noise.

3. Apparel, Beauty, and Jewelry

Apparel draws on Wood and Fire, emphasizing display, color, and trend; beauty services commonly draw on Water, Wood, and Fire together, needing both privacy and manifest brightness at once; jewelry draws on Metal and Fire, with Metal relying on Fire's light to be shown off. All three place heavy weight on mirrors and lighting, and so must guard against mirror facing mirror, light rushing straight at the door, and a clash between Fire and Metal.

The fitting room, the beauty treatment bed, and VIP seating belong to still use, and need support, should avoid a door's clash, and should be judged by the mountain star; the display window and the new-arrivals table belong to active display, and weigh more on the facing star and the approach route. A jewelry store's register and safe area should have solid rear support; where Seven Red arrives at that palace, real security should be strengthened rather than substituting a water feature for actual surveillance.

4. Bookstores, Training Centers, and Cultural Spaces

Culture and education commonly draw on the image of One and Four's Water and Wood, and Nine's Fire and civilization. The entrance display and event area can be active, while the reading, teaching, and lesson-prep areas should be quiet. A palace where Four Green finds its use can serve content planning; a palace where Nine Purple finds its use can serve presentation and dissemination — but sound and light must not disturb reading.

Bookshelves act as tall, solid sand, and their arrangement should have a clear primary and secondary layout, avoiding a long, narrow, oppressive aisle. A center crowded with tall shelving blocks the central palace, and a dead corner at the end easily turns stagnant with yin. Fire-safety egress and shelf anti-tip measures must always come first. Withered, yellowing plants and dusty old paper do not carry the refined image of the literary star.

5. Medical, Health, and Wellness Services

This kind of trade calls for stability, cleanliness, and quiet — a waiting area with a proper bright hall but not excessive noise, and a treatment position with support and protected privacy. The traditional prompts of Two Black and Five Yellow can be translated into hygiene, disinfection, equipment maintenance, and staff care — not a prediction of illness. Fengshui must never be claimed as a treatment or a substitute for medicine.

Spa and physical-therapy equipment carries multiple attributes of Water, Fire, and electricity at once — position it first according to professional standards, and only then consider its palace. Aromatherapy and smoke can cause allergic reactions and fire-safety problems, and should never be overused in the name of purification. A spirit tablet or ritual must never affect a patient's choices or their privacy.

6. Finance, Pawnbroking, and High-Value Services

Finance draws on Metal and Water, needing both circulation and safekeeping at once. A clear entrance hall, a negotiation area with support, and a stable bookkeeping and vault area express the function of "water in front, mountain behind." The register or counter must not sit in a direct rush from the door or path, and a balance must be struck between transparent openness and a secure boundary.

Six White can be read as rule and management, One White as circulation, and Seven Red as a reminder of dispute and loss — but all of these must be judged against the actual chart. Genuine regulatory compliance, data security, and anti-fraud measures matter far more than an auspicious number. A water feature must not sit near electrical equipment or archives; a metal security fixture can itself carry the image of Metal.

7. Technology, Communications, and Imaging Stores

Screens, lighting, signals, and rapid turnover carry a strong image of Fire and Metal, and the Ninth Period readily brings out this Li-Fire character. The display area can be bright, while the repair and storage areas should be stable; a continuous wall of screens sitting in a palace with a Fire-Earth sha should have unnecessary brightness and heat reduced. Equipment cooling, electrical load, and battery fire safety are the first priority.

Communications draws on Xun's wind and Kan's flowing water, and the door and path should let customers find the consultation point quickly, rather than being scattered by multiple screens. A sharp-cornered display stand and exposed cabling carry both the image of a Fire-Metal clash and a genuine safety hazard, and should be addressed first.

8. Flower Shops, Gardening, and Fresh Produce

The floral and gardening trade runs strong on Wood qi, while fresh produce also carries both Water and Earth. The shopfront needs to be bright and vivid, while the back storeroom is cold and damp — a sharp contrast of yin and yang. Refrigerated cases and drainage carry strong Water movement, and cannot simply be judged auspicious because they generate the Wood image — the water quality, temperature, and star chart must all be checked. Decay, odor, and wilting create a clear image of decline, and should be cleared away frequently.

If too many plants block the bright hall, generative qi can turn into stagnation instead. Tall plants can serve as side sand, low flower stands as an interior case, keeping the main passage clear. A palace where Nine Fire arrives can bring out the flowers' color, but strong light and high heat also damage the plants — the symbolic use must always give way to proper care.

9. Hotels, Guesthouses, and Members' Clubs

This kind of space combines the movement of a public lobby with the stillness of the guest rooms. The main door, front desk, and elevators form a chain for receiving qi; the front desk should find the facing star and have support, while the guest room beds and rest areas weigh more heavily on the mountain star. One cannot take the lobby's chart and use it to judge every single room — there should be one master chart for the whole property, with each floor and room given its own auxiliary sub-palaces.

Water features, fragrance, lighting, and artwork are often used heavily, and excess in any one of the Five Phases should be avoided. Fire-safety egress, privacy, hygiene, and security take priority. A club's spirit tablet or ritual must respect every user of the space, and must never be made to feel compulsory.

10. Factory Outlets, Warehouse Stores, and Wholesale Shops

A large-volume space lets qi scatter easily, and the loading dock, roller shutter, and truck route are strong, active water mouths. The main entrance and the goods entrance should be kept clearly separate, avoiding a straight pass-through from front to back. Tall shelving acts as solid sand, and its arrangement can form protection, or it can just as easily become oppressive and blocking — the central palace and fire lanes especially must never be piled with goods.

The office, cash handling, and sample area should be pulled out of the rush of logistics, forming a small, supported bright hall of their own. Forklifts, machinery, and fans continuously activate whatever palace they sit in, carrying far more weight than any single ornament. Where Five Yellow or Two Black arrives at an equipment palace, inspection, reduced activity, and Metal draining are the traditional approach — but a production safety plan must never be delayed for the sake of date selection.

11. Nighttime Entertainment and Sound-Based Trades

Nightclubs, cinemas, and performance venues turn night into day, so the yin-yang judgment must follow the actual business hours. Screens, the stage, sound systems, and crowds carry strong Fire and strong movement, while the area right outside the entrance may nonetheless be dark. The shopfront needs clear identification and a security buffer, with the active interior zone kept separate from rest, register, and equipment areas.

Noise-sha does not come only from outside — the venue's own low-frequency sound can disturb neighbors as well, so soundproofing must come first. Where a palace such as Three Jade or Seven Red is activated by the sound system, tradition allows reducing sharp conflict there, but "fengshui music" must never be used to mask noise that exceeds the legal limit.

12. Studios Built Mainly Around Online Business

A studio with little foot traffic can still have its facing star's wealth-use expressed not only through the door, but also through active points such as network equipment, a livestream area, and a shipping outlet. But the house chart is still rooted in the building's actual sitting-facing direction and its real qi mouth — website traffic can never be directly counted as water.

A livestreaming area draws on Li Fire's manifest brightness; a planning area draws on Xun Wood's dissemination; storage and shipping draw on Gen and Kun Earth together with Kan Water's circulation — these can serve as functional readings. Screen-driven Fire excess, prolonged sitting without support, and boxes blocking the path are common problems. Even with few doors opened to the public, the entrance should still be kept tidy, so the house's qi is never entirely sealed off.

13. Multi-Format Combined Shops

A bookstore combined with a café, a flower shop combined with photography, retail combined with livestreaming — the Five Phases and the balance of movement and stillness all grow more complex. First determine the primary and secondary trades: the primary trade takes the main qi-receiving spot and the operational core, while the secondary trade is placed in an area that generates it favorably or at least does not clash with it. If two strongly active trades compete for the same flourishing facing-star palace, they can share it in stages — door, display, transaction — rather than piling everything into one spot.

A combined shop should map out multiple flows of foot traffic, guarding against a food-service operation's Water and Fire damaging books or equipment nearby. Dividing the space by palace in the divinatory arts, and dividing it by zone in daily management, can cross-verify each other. There is no need to plot a separate, unrelated whole-shop chart for every single trade under one roof.

14. A General Matrix for Putting a Trade's Layout to Use

Any trade can be judged through five questions: how much moving foot traffic does it need; is the core transaction fast or slow; where are the Fire and Water equipment; how much still support do the staff need; should the merchandise be displayed or kept concealed. Mapping the answers onto the facing star, the mountain star, the door and path, the stove and water, and the counter produces a layout tailored to that trade.

A trade's conventional Five Phases serves only as a sixth-order check. If the real function shows strong Fire, this should not be ignored just because the trade is nominally classed as Water; if the space is quiet and appointment-based, one should not simply copy the door-activation approach of a fast-moving retail shop. The precision of the esoteric system lies exactly in the specific quality of qi, not in a trade label.
