A Complete Study of Commercial Shop Fengshui (Esoteric Edition): From Form School and the Luopan to Xuankong Dating

A systematic account of commercial shop fengshui built on the traditional arts themselves — exterior form school (luantou), the Twenty-Four Mountains, Three Cycles Xuankong plotting, doors/paths/registers, annual date selection, Five Phases remediation, and worked case studies.

XXXII. Worked Example One: A South-Facing Bakery in the Ninth Period

This section is a fictional example, meant only to demonstrate the order of judgment. It does not correspond to any real client, and makes no claim that any adjustment produces any actual effect.

1. Known Conditions

Suppose a street-facing bakery newly built and opened in 2025, with a roughly rectangular floor plan, its main shopfront facing south. Three exterior readings give 182, 181.5, and 182.5 degrees, with the interior axis reading about 182 degrees, allowing it to be plotted on a Ninth-Period chart under the teaching convention of "sitting Zi, facing Wu, true facing." A twelve-meter-wide pedestrian easing zone lies in front of the door, with foot traffic arriving from the southeast and departing to the southwest; a continuous solid wall lies behind, to the north.

The plan calls for display on the east side of the shop, dining seating on the west, and the baking area toward the back, to the north. The main door is wide and the shop reasonably deep, with about four meters of open space just inside the door. The original plan placed the oven behind the glass on the south side, the register directly facing the door, and the back door nearly in a straight line with the main door.

2. Form-School Judgment

The bright hall to the south is a reasonable size, with foot traffic easing in from the southeast and dispersing to the southwest — a case of both coming and going. Something is needed just inside the door to receive it, to keep the outgoing flow from moving too fast. The north side has solid support, well suited to a quiet back area. Placing the oven on the south side, behind the glass, would stack three fires together — sunlight, lighting, and the oven's own flame — with the heat clearly visible through the glass, pushing the Li-Fire image too far.

The straight line to the back door is an interior leakage point. Even before discussing the flying stars, form school alone would suggest angling the service passage or letting the work area form a turn there, while keeping the legally required width. The register, sitting squarely on the door's axis, also takes a clash and should be moved to one side.

3. Demonstrating the Overlaid Principle-and-Qi Chart

Suppose that, on the true-facing Ninth-Period chart adopted here, the facing direction carries a currently governing Nine Purple facing star that can be taken up; the southeast has another usable facing-star combination; the mountain-star relation to the north is comparatively stable; and the southwest palace carries a latent concern of Two Black Earth being generated by a Fire star. The full set of Nine-Palace numbers is not listed here, so that this teaching assumption is never mistaken for a universal chart — any real project must have its own chart replotted from its own degree readings.

The south door can take up the flourishing Nine Purple facing star, but "taking up a flourishing Fire" does not mean piling on still more Fire. Keep the main display and gentle, well-rendered lighting on the south side, and pull the oven's flame back to a code-compliant, properly vented area to the north, forming a pattern of "manifest in front, concealed behind." If the southwest is where customers depart and where the lighting is brightest, since Fire there is generating Earth, one can reduce red, high-heat lighting and use the existing metal furniture with round edges to draw on Metal draining Earth — and not install the stove there.

4. The Door, Path, Register, and Five Phases

Keep a low, case-style table for new items just inside the main door, so that the incoming qi from the southeast pauses briefly after entering. Let the main passage loop around both sides of this table rather than running straight through to the back door. Place the register slightly to the east, set back, with its back against a solid storage cabinet, so it can see the door while staying off the door's axis. Arrange the oven and sink in washing-cutting-baking order, with a work counter between them so Water and Fire are not pressed directly together.

Baking belongs to Fire and Wood, and the space is already south-facing in the Ninth Period, so it should not be covered in red and purple throughout. The main materials can use wood tones to draw on Wood generating Fire, but the area used should be controlled; white-gray metal equipment can drain the Earth and keep the space feeling clean; stone should be used only as a durable countertop. Plants should not enter the high-heat food-preparation area, in keeping with hygiene requirements.

5. The Annual Star and Date Selection

If the plan is to open in 2026, first overlay the annual chart with One White entering the center on the house chart, mark the annual stars at the main door, the oven, and the southwest palace, and then choose among candidate dates that do not clash with the Zi mountain, are marked suitable for opening a business in the Tongsheng almanac, have a favorable Establishment-and-Removal officer, and fall on the Yellow Path with a usable virtue spirit. Installing the oven counts as installing the stove and equipment construction, and can be scheduled on a separate date from the opening itself. Any actual date must be plotted from the real month at hand — this fictional example does not fabricate a "supremely auspicious day."

6. Points for Follow-Up Review

After opening, the review checks whether the area just inside the door becomes congested, whether the back door creates a draft straight through, whether the oven area overheats, and whether the register ends up pinched between two paths — not whether revenue proves the fengshui right. If the low display table causes queuing conflicts, adjust its size and the route first; once the annual star changes, remove last year's temporary Metal-phase arrangement before reassessing.
