XXXIII. Worked Example Two: A Beauty Shop at a Mall Escalator Landing

This section is a fictional example. All chart conditions are set for teaching purposes and must not be applied to any other shop of the same orientation.

1. Multiple Layers of Qi Mouths

Suppose the mall building was completed in the Eighth Period, with its main entrance facing east; the target unit sits on the second floor, its opening facing southeast, directly opposite the up-escalator landing but slightly to the right. Since the tenant is only doing soft-furnishing work within the Ninth Period, the building-level chart still keeps its Eighth-Period data, while the small unit establishes its own auxiliary qi-receiving chart based on its actual southeast opening — the two are kept on separate layers, and the soft-furnishing work is not claimed to shift the whole building into the Ninth Period.

The escalator continuously carries people upward; most turn left on stepping off, with only a few naturally looking toward this shop. The shop's door is not hit by a direct rush from the escalator — it sits slightly to the front side, catching the residual flow instead. The corridor in front of the opening is widened, and can be regarded as a shared middle bright hall; the back of the shop is a fire-rated wall, giving solid support.

2. The Weight of the Form-School Factors

The escalator carries strong moving water, and its direction and the way people turn matter more than simply "facing an escalator means a clash." This shop sits on the side opposite the main direction people turn, so although the foot traffic is close, it does not rush straight into the door. The priority is not sha remediation, but turning the storefront and the front display to face the direction customers naturally look as they turn, taking up the qi arriving from the side. Promotional racks must never be placed in the public corridor to obstruct it.

In the original plan, the interior was filled with tall cabinets right up to the entrance, leaving only a narrow gap at the door — so even strong incoming qi reaching the door would be blocked. The adjustment is to use a low display at the entrance, an experience zone in the middle, and tall cabinets and storage toward the back, forming a progression from movement to stillness.

3. Assumed Star Chart and the Division of Movement and Stillness

Suppose the small unit's auxiliary chart shows a usable facing star at the southeast opening's palace, but the mountain star sharing that palace is unsuited to a fixed, long-seated position; the mountain star to the northwest, at the rear, is comparatively favorable; and the west palace has Seven Red meeting Three Jade. In that case, the southeast door area should be used to draw in new arrivals, without a beauty consultant's long-term seat placed there; the consultation desk should be moved back to the palace with better support. In the west palace, avoid sharp metal display racks and loud promotional audio, and make the return-and-exchange policy and pricing information clearly displayed.

Beauty services draw on Water, Wood, and Fire, and the lighting and mirrors are already strong. Use comfortable, well-rendered lighting in the palace where the facing star flourishes, avoiding a flickering screen; angle the mirrors slightly so they do not directly reflect the chaotic movement of the escalator outside. Place the register toward the back side but where it can still see the door, with its back against a tall cabinet, keeping the queue line from crossing the experience zone.

4. Why Eight Mansions Serves Only an Auxiliary Role

If, according to the house trigram of the small unit's sitting-facing, one of the Eight Mansions favorable directions happens to fall exactly on the fire-safety equipment, it must not be blocked by a cabinet. If another favorable direction coincides with a usable mountain-star palace in the Xuankong chart, it can serve as the consultant's fixed seat. Here, Eight Mansions is used only to screen among otherwise equally matched candidate positions — a favorable direction is never allowed to override fire-safety rules.

5. Annual and Monthly Adjustments

If Five Yellow flies to the escalator-facing opening's palace in a given year, since the door cannot be closed, the treatment is to keep the entrance steady, reduce extra hammering and fire-themed lighting in that palace, use the existing metal-framed furniture to drain it, and avoid hanging anything heavy there that could fall or make disturbing noise. Once the monthly period has passed, review again — the tall cabinets should not be moved every month.
