XXXIV. Worked Example Three: A Convenience Store on the Outside of a Curve

1. The Facts of the Exterior Configuration

Suppose a convenience store sits on the outside of a gently curving road, its door six meters from the traffic lane, with a pedestrian walkway and a continuous strip of greenery railing in between. Vehicles pass quickly from northeast to south, and the door does not sit exactly on the line of the curve's crown; the real pedestrian customer flow instead comes from a subway exit to the west. On a map this looks like a reverse bow, but there is a real buffer close at hand, and the main customer approach differs from the traffic's path.

For this reason the reverse bow here should be rated as moderate-to-low in strength — one should not jump to a conclusion of "seriously inauspicious." The exterior qi that is actually usable is really the pedestrian approach from the west; there is room to pause within two meters of the door, and the visibility of the west-side signage determines how well qi is received. Hanging a mirror at the curve alone would be both unnecessary and would risk glaring reflections that distract drivers.

2. Interior Problems

The original register sat at the far end, directly in line with the front door, with a run of refrigerated cases right behind it; the shelving formed three straight aisles, so the door's qi rushed straight to the register and then scattered off behind the staff. A convenience store needs fast turnover and cannot afford to make its passages too winding. The fix is to offset the entrance promotional table slightly and stagger the main shelving by half a unit, giving the incoming qi one gentle turn; move the register to a spot where it can see the door while backed by a solid cabinet.

The refrigerated cases carry both Metal and moving qualities, while the hot-food case carries Fire — the two should not sit pressed together in the same tight corner. According to the chart, keep high-heat equipment away from any palace holding Two Black or Five Yellow Earth, and place the refrigerated cases' moving-Water quality in a palace where the facing star is usable and where the power and drainage conditions allow. Safety and the cold chain come first.

3. The Water Mouth and Guarding Wealth

Foot traffic arrives from the west, and after purchasing, most customers leave heading east — the door carries both the coming and the going at once. A low promotional table on the left of the entrance can take up the incoming qi, while the right side stays clear for customers leaving. There is no need to force the register into the so-called diagonal bright-wealth corner just inside the door; if that corner happens to be where a refrigerated case door opens and closes frequently, it is better used for product display instead, with the real register placed in a palace that has proper support.

4. The Sha-Remediation Decision

The existing greenery railing outside has already accomplished the work of "separating and easing" — there is no need to add a large object on top of it. Inside the door, use a low table to "gather"; use side signage to "draw in"; use a solidly backed register to "guard." This follows the order of avoid, yield, block, ease, remediate, use, far better than trying to counter the curve with a sharp object. If the road is ever realigned in the future, the traffic and the incoming approach should be re-measured — the strength of a reverse bow should never be assumed to stay the same forever.
