A Complete Study of Commercial Shop Fengshui (Esoteric Edition): From Form School and the Luopan to Xuankong Dating

XLII. Frequently Asked Questions

1. Without a Luopan, Can I Use My Phone's Compass$1

A phone can serve as an initial screen at the site-selection stage, but it cannot substitute for a formal direction measurement. A phone is affected by calibration, a magnetic case, steel structure, and how it is held. If only a phone is available, at least take multiple readings at multiple points, outside the shop and along the interior axis, and record the range; for plotting a fine-grained chart, a reliable luopan cross-checked against the drawings is still recommended.

2. Should I Measure Outside the Door or Inside$2

Both. Measure at an open point outside the shop to avoid the door frame's magnetic interference; measure in the middle of the door to capture the actual opening; measure along a parallel interior wall to verify the axis. Ideally the three agree; where they do not, check for metal, motors, and any angled door, and keep the building's direction and the unit's own direction on separate layers.

3. The Roller Shutter Is Entirely Metal — How Should It Be Measured$3

Do not measure right up against the shutter. Step back to an open point outside, use a line parallel to the shopfront as the reference, or re-measure along a side-wall axis well away from the shutter. Record readings for both the open and closed states of the shutter separately. A reading that jumps wildly right at the door should not be treated as carrying any special fortune or misfortune.

4. If the Shop Door Opens at an Angle, Should I Use the Building's Direction or the Door's Direction$4

Record both. The building's direction is used for the overall house chart; the angled door is the actual qi mouth, and its palace and direction can serve as an auxiliary reading. If a leased unit relies on an angled door for its long-term customer intake, some conventions weigh the unit's own direction more heavily; the report must state which layer is being used, and must never blend the two directions into one.

5. The Mall Has No Exterior Door — How Do I Determine the Direction$5

Record the mall building's own direction, the main approach of qi on the relevant floor, the unit's opening direction, and the interior axis. The building-level chart looks at the whole; the unit's auxiliary chart looks at the door, path, and register. The escalator, elevator, and atrium are all important active qi points. Having no street door does not mean there is no way to receive qi.

6. The Shop Has a Front and a Back Door — Which One Is the Main Door$6

Look at the signage, how long each stays open, the proportion of customers using each, the exterior bright hall, and how customers are actually greeted. The main door is not simply whichever one the owner names verbally — it is established through consistent actual use. If the back door mainly handles goods, it should be recorded as the qi mouth for the goods flow; if the two doors directly face each other, guard against a through-and-leak, but a fire door must never be locked.

7. Can Fengshui Still Be Assessed for a Basement Shop$7

Yes, but more weight falls on the mall's entrance, the escalator, the elevator, ventilation, lighting, drainage, and the floor-level corridor. Tradition reads a basement as naturally carrying heavier yin, but real fresh-air supply, damp-proofing, and emergency egress matter more in practice. The unit's own direction is still measured from its actual opening and axis.

8. For a Second-Floor Shop, Does the Stairwell Landing Count as Water$1

Stairs and escalators carry qi moving up and down, and can be read by analogy as a dynamic water mouth — but one must look at the direction of travel, the turn on exiting, and whether people pause there. It is not real water that can simply have its sha remediated with a placed object, and one should not judge wealth solely from "water rising to the hall." Receiving it properly at the door and providing a safety buffer both matter just as much.

9. How Large Should the Bright Hall Be$2

There is no single standard measurement — it should be proportioned to the door's width, the scale of the shopfront, and the speed of the incoming force. For a small shop, a tidy pausing area two or three meters in front of the door may be enough; a large shop needs a larger, layered space. The bright hall should be open yet bounded — too narrow and it feels oppressed, too empty and the qi scatters, and neither is ideal.

10. Does a Tree in Front of the Door Always Block Wealth$3

Not necessarily. A tree that stands upright at a moderate distance can serve as a buffer and as guarding sand; only a trunk pressed right against the middle of the door, a canopy blocking the sign, or roots damaging the pavement becomes an obstruction. Its health, canopy size, distance, and who maintains it all matter — a public tree should never be cut down without authorization.

11. What If the Door Opposite Is Bigger Than Mine$4

First look at the distance across the road and the real degree of pressure. Where a wide street separates them, the effect is milder; a large door facing a small one across a narrow corridor is more noticeable. Improve the proportion of your own facade, your signage, your interior bright hall, and your reception area, rather than using a mirror to attack the shop across the way. If there is an actual conflict over public passage, coordinate with the property manager.

12. Must the Register Be on the Right Side of the Entrance$5

There is no such universal rule. The register needs support in form, visibility of the door, and avoidance of a clash line, and then the facing star and the annual star should be checked. Left or right depends on the door, the customer flow pattern, and the chart. Fast checkout, seated consultation, and food-order counters all have different needs as well.

13. What If There Is Glass Right Behind the Register$6

Glass leans toward the insubstantial. Where it does not block light or an egress route, a stable half-height cabinet, a non-transparent backing panel, or a change of orientation can form proper support. If the glass must remain the display face, the register can instead be moved to a side with a solid wall. Do not use a loose, flimsy screen to fake support.

14. Can a Safe Be Placed at the Wealth Spot$7

If that position is suited to stillness, has support in form, and the star chart suits guarding and storage, a safe can be placed there; but if it is instead a flourishing facing position that needs a door and water to draw traffic in, a heavy safe may press that active wealth spot down into stillness. The wealth spot divides into drawing-in, gathering, and guarding — a safe suits guarding, and need not coincide with the flourishing position right at the door.

15. Where Should a Fish Tank Go to Attract the Most Wealth$8

There is no fixed answer without plotting the chart. A fish tank carries strong moving water, and should be placed in a palace where the facing star is usable and which is genuinely safe, avoiding any mountain-star position unsuited to water, fire-and-electrical equipment, and a combination such as Two Black or Five Yellow that water might make worse. Water quality, load capacity, waterproofing, and maintenance determine whether it can be installed at all.

16. Does a Leak Mean a Leak of Wealth$9

Tradition does carry the imagery of water draining away as wealth scattering, but first and foremost a leak is a building and hygiene problem. Shut off the water immediately, inspect and repair it, and guard against mold, recording the damage. Do not simply place a sha-remediation object or wait for an auspicious day to make the repair. Once it is fixed, then consider how that palace should be restored.

17. Can a Shop Have Lots of Plants$10

Plants belong to Wood, and whether they suit a palace depends on whether Wood is needed there, the available light, and the care they receive. Too much Wood can generate excess Fire or control Earth too strongly, and a large quantity can also block the path and breed pests and mold. A layered arrangement of high and low, kept healthy and modest in number, is better than a dense, forest-like pile. A food-preparation area should follow hygiene regulations regardless.

18. Must the Spirit Tablet Face the Main Door$11

Customs differ from place to place, and no single rule should be imposed. The shared principles are: upright, clean, with support behind it, away from the toilet, kitchen smoke, and collision, and never blocking a fire exit. Its orientation can be considered together with the shop's facing and local custom, but a venue's no-open-flame rule and voluntary participation take priority. Forgoing a spirit tablet entirely is perfectly fine.

19. Is a Dropped Ceiling the Only Way to Deal with a Beam Pressing Over the Register$12

Moving the register to avoid the beam's line is the first choice. Where that is not possible, a code-compliant ceiling treatment designed by a professional can soften it visually, but a structural beam must never be removed, nor a sprinkler covered, nor an access panel sealed. The scale and distance of the beam must also be judged — not every visible line counts as a heavy pressure.

20. What Should Be Done If the Toilet Sits at the So-Called Wealth Spot$13

First keep it dry, ventilated, leak-free, and its door closed, and address the real waste disposal. If it cannot be relocated, do not try to activate wealth inside the toilet or place moving water there — find another usable palace with a door, path, and facing star to take on the role of drawing in and gathering wealth instead. One restricted palace does not mean the whole shop has no wealth spot at all.

21. Does Nine Purple Arriving at the Toilet Always Mean a Loss of Wealth$14

This cannot be judged as a certainty. One must distinguish whether Nine Purple is the house chart's mountain star, facing star, or the annual star, and check whether the toilet is actually damp and unclean, the Fire-Earth relation, and the door and path. A flourishing star landing at a waste-discharge point may be hard to use well, but the priority in treatment remains hygiene and finding another usable palace — not predicting a specific event.

22. Can Two Black and Five Yellow Be Remediated with Red$15

This is generally not recommended, since red belongs to Fire, and Fire generating Earth may only strengthen Two Black's and Five Yellow's Earth nature further. Metal draining and keeping the space still are the more common approach. But if a Wood star sharing that palace genuinely needs Fire as a pass-through, an overall balance must be weighed — this cannot be applied as a blanket rule. The first priority is always to reduce strong Fire-and-Earth activity and to fix the real underlying problem.

23. Does Placing a Red Object Handle Three Jade, the Dispute Star$16

Using Fire to drain Wood is a traditional path, but one must check whether Two Black or Five Yellow Earth shares that palace and would be generated further by the Fire. A small red object carries limited force — reducing noise and conflict, making prices and contracts clear, and training staff in communication are far more substantial measures. Using a large amount of Fire to force the draining can also go too far.

24. Can Seven Red Be Remediated with Water$17

Water can drain Metal, but the palace must genuinely suit water. If the mountain star there needs solidity and stillness, or if water would activate another unfavorable combination, real moving water should not be placed there. A small area of black-blue color or a curved line can carry a mild water image instead, alongside strengthened security and management of sharp implements.

25. Must the Register Be Moved Every Year to Follow the Annual Wealth Spot$18

This is not recommended. The register is a fixed operational core, and should primarily follow the house chart and its support in form. A flourishing annual star can be taken up with a temporary display, an event, or moderate lighting instead; an inauspicious annual star arriving at the register calls for reduced activity and remediation. Moving the counter frequently disrupts stability and does more harm than good.

26. Does the Taisui Direction Mean No One Can Move Through It$19

No. Tradition's main concern is avoiding strong ground-breaking, demolition, and construction there — it does not prohibit ordinary passage and business as usual. If the Taisui direction happens to hold the main door, normal use is fine; if a major renovation is planned there, evaluate it together with the required permits and date selection. A safety exit must never be blocked because of this.

27. Must an Opening Always Fall on an "Open" Day$20

An Open day's meaning does fit an opening semantically, but one must still check for a clash with the sitting mountain, the monthly command, the Yellow or Black Path, other auspicious and inauspicious spirits, and the day chart. A Complete day, a Fix day, and others may also carry suitable conditions. A single character "Open" should not be allowed to override a serious clash.

28. Which Counts as the Actual Opening — the Soft Opening or the Formal One$21

If the soft opening has already involved sustained door use, transactions, and use of the stove, tradition may well regard it as the actual point of opening. A formal celebration can be scheduled on a separate auspicious date as a ceremonial moment. It is best to make this clear at the planning stage, to avoid denying the reality of the business afterward purely to make a date look better.

29. What If the Auspicious Hour Is Missed by a Few Minutes$22

There is no need for alarm. Open the door normally, following safety and order, and record the actual time. Choosing an hour is a traditional supplement, and should never cause customers to crowd together or staff to rush and take a risk to hit the exact second. If a major part of the ceremony has not yet taken place, one can check whether the original date-selection plan included a backup hour, rather than improvising a substitute ritual on the spot.

30. Does Every Step of Renovation Need Its Own Chosen Date$23

No. Major actions such as the first ground-breaking, tearing down a wall, installing the door, installing the stove, fixing the register in place, and the opening itself can be scheduled; ordinary matters such as painting, restocking, and cleaning need not be treated at the same level. An urgent safety repair should always be done immediately, regardless of the date.

31. Can Poor Business Be Fixed by Changing the Door to Change the Period$24

Changing the door is a major action, requiring structural, fire-safety, and property-management approval, and it requires the sitting-facing and the qi mouth to be reassessed from scratch — it is not a quick fix. First examine the product, the price, customer traffic, management, and the shopfront's visibility. Even if the door's position is genuinely unfavorable by tradition, the cost and feasibility of the change should be weighed carefully, and no promise of increased profit afterward should ever be made.

32. Is It Necessary to Provide the Proprietor's Birth Information$25

The shop's form school and Xuankong chart do not require it. Only if the East-West Four Destinies system or personal date selection is being used voluntarily might limited information be needed, and privacy should be protected. Public-facing doors, paths, and the register are never decided around a single person's destiny trigram.

33. Is a Leased Unit Worth Doing Fengshui For$26

Yes, with an emphasis on reversible adjustments: recording the direction measurement, the interior bright hall, the counter, the register, the lighting, movement and stillness, and an annual review. Whatever cannot be changed in the exterior or the structure should be honestly listed as a limitation. With a short lease term, heavy objects or unapproved construction work are not advisable.

34. How Should Objects Be Handled After Moving Out$27

Ordinary objects can be recycled or continue in use per environmental rules; plants should be properly relocated; a water feature should be drained and cleaned. An item of religious significance should be handled according to its holder's custom and local regulations. There is no rule that moving anything is automatically inauspicious — what matters is safety, respect, and not leaving behind clutter.

35. How Can I Judge Whether a Commercial Fengshui Report Is Reliable$28

Check whether it includes actual measured degree readings, evidence for the determined period, clear legends, factual form-school observations, palace-by-palace reasoning, a plan for the door and path, the school's convention used, a stated boundary of risk, and a review mechanism. If it lists only objects, alarming predictions, and a guarantee of profit, or refuses to explain its charting steps, be cautious.

36. What Should Be Done When Fengshui Advice Conflicts with a Designer's Opinion$29

First determine the level of the conflict. Where structure, fire safety, human ergonomics, and professional equipment are involved, defer to qualified professionals; among several equally feasible designs, traditional direction-based screening can then be applied. Ask both sides to mark their positions on the same scaled drawing — many conflicts actually come down to using different versions of the plan.

37. How Long Before an Adjustment Takes Effect$30

This article makes no promise of any effect, and gives no fixed number of days. What can be reviewed is whether the door and path flow smoothly, whether the equipment is safe, whether objects are being maintained, and whether the plan was implemented as intended. Business results are shaped by a great many real-world variables, and cannot serve as proof of a causal effect from any single fengshui measure.

38. Can This Process Still Be Used by Someone Who Does Not Believe in the Esoteric Arts at All$31

Yes — it can be treated as a method of spatial observation drawn from traditional culture, keeping the direction measurement, the recording, movement and stillness, the door and path, and the review, while skipping any object or ritual tied to belief. Whether or not one believes does not affect compliance with safety regulations. A cultural understanding of the tradition and a critical boundary around it can coexist.
