XLIV. Conclusion: Only With a Proper Order Does a Genuine Esoteric System Exist
The esoteric depth of commercial fengshui does not lie in how many sha names are listed, how unusual the objects displayed are, or in any air of secret transmission. It comes from a single chain of space and time that can be independently recomputed: yin and yang and the Five Phases describe the nature of qi; the River Chart, the Luo Writing, and the Eight Trigrams establish the numerology of direction; the Twenty-Four Mountains refine the facing into fine detail; form school observes the dragon, the lair, the sand, the water, and the facing, together with the bright hall and the water mouth; the Three Cycles and Nine Periods fix the background of time; Xuankong's mountain, facing, and flying stars distinguish movement, stillness, gain, and loss; the door, path, stove, and register bring the chart down into the actual business space; and the annual star, the monthly star, and date selection adjust the rhythm further still.
In a genuine survey, one should always proceed in the order "exterior form school — measuring the direction and establishing the pivot — determining the period and plotting the chart — the door, path, and register — putting the Five Phases to use — the annual star and date selection — review and adjustment." Where an earlier step is unclear, the later step should carry that uncertainty forward as a stated condition; different schools should never be blended into a single sentence; where a measurement is unstable, two charts should be compared side by side; where reality cannot be changed, the limitation should be stated plainly. Doing things this way makes no promise of wealth, but it does let the traditional arts keep their own structure, their sense of proportion, and their honesty.
