Chapter Two: The Astronomical Foundations of Great Cold--When the Sun Reaches 300 Degrees of Celestial Longitude

I. 300 Degrees of Celestial Longitude: Where the Year's Cycle Returns Home

How did the ancients determine Great Cold's precise position$21 This question leads us to the heart of Chinese classical astronomy.

In the language of modern astronomy, Great Cold is the moment when the sun reaches 300 degrees of ecliptic longitude. The "ecliptic longitude" is the angular measure the sun traverses in its apparent annual journey along the ecliptic (the projection of Earth's orbital plane onto the celestial sphere). The Twenty-Four Solar Terms divide the ecliptic's full 360-degree circle into twenty-four equal segments of fifteen degrees each, with each fifteen-degree passage marking a new solar term. Start of Spring falls at 315 degrees, Rain Water at 330, Awakening of Insects at 345, Spring Equinox at zero (i.e., 360 degrees)... and so on through the sequence, with Minor Cold at 285 degrees and Great Cold at 300 degrees.

Note what this set of numbers reveals about the completion of the circle: Great Cold sits at 300 degrees; advance another fifteen degrees and the sun arrives at 315 degrees--precisely Start of Spring. Then, after traversing a full 360-degree revolution, the sun returns once more to the Spring Equinox's zero point. Thus we see that from Great Cold (300 degrees) to Start of Spring (315 degrees) to the next Spring Equinox (back to zero)--this is the final arc of the annual cycle as it nears closure and prepares to reset. Great Cold stands at the critical position on this arc: the point where the old revolution is about to conclude and the new revolution is about to begin. Three hundred degrees, with only the final sixty remaining before the 360 that symbolize the cycle's "fullness"--and within those final sixty degrees, the stirring of Start of Spring and the return-to-zero of Spring Equinox are already gestating.

But here arises a question worthy of reflection: the ancients did not possess the modern concept of "ecliptic longitude"--how did they grasp this "year-end return" through astronomical observation$22

II. The Return After the Longest Shadow: The Wisdom of Gnomon Observation

The most basic and ancient method was to observe the sun's shadow. The Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), in the section on the Grand Minister of Education (Da Situ), records: "By the method of the earth-gnomon, measure the depth of the earth, rectify the sun's shadow, in order to determine the center of the earth." The gnomon--a vertical pole ("biao") combined with a horizontal measuring rule ("gui")--was among China's oldest astronomical instruments. By measuring the length of the pole's shadow at noon, the ancients could precisely determine the sun's altitude in the sky and thereby fix the solar terms.

As we learned in our reading of Start of Summer: the noon shadow is shortest at the Summer Solstice and longest at the Winter Solstice. Great Cold falls after the Winter Solstice and before Start of Spring--that is, during Great Cold the noon shadow is in the process of "shortening from its maximum." On the Winter Solstice the shadow reached the year's greatest length (the sun at its lowest position in the sky); after that day the shadow shortened day by day, and the sun's noon altitude rose day by day. When the ancients observed that the shadow had shortened noticeably from its Winter Solstice extreme but had not yet contracted to the degree seen at Start of Spring, they knew: Great Cold has arrived.

Herein lies an astronomical fact of the highest importance, one easily overlooked, yet it forms the very astronomical foundation for understanding Great Cold's philosophical meaning: although Great Cold is the coldest solar term, by this time the sun has long since "turned around." The Winter Solstice--the day of the sun's lowest point, the longest shadow, the weakest yang-qi--passed nearly a month ago. From that moment onward, the sun's noon altitude has been rising day by day, daylight lengthening day by day; "yang-qi" in the astronomical sense has already been recovering.

Why then, if yang-qi (solar altitude, daylight) has been recovering for nearly a month, does the coldest weather come only at Great Cold$23 This is precisely what the ancients observed, and what later ages call the "temperature lag" phenomenon: the earth acts as a vast thermal reservoir, continuously radiating heat throughout autumn and winter, and the cumulative effect of this heat loss means the coldest period falls not at the Winter Solstice (when the sun is lowest) but lagging behind it, at Minor Cold and Great Cold. In other words, at Great Cold's coldest moment, the "yang" in the sky has long since begun its return--the sun is already higher, daylight already longer--only the "cold" on the ground continues to assert itself through accumulated momentum.

This astronomical phenomenon is the perfect celestial footnote to the philosophical proposition that "when things reach their extreme they must reverse, and yang lies hidden within yin." On the surface, Great Cold is the pinnacle of yin-cold; but beneath this pinnacle, yang-qi has already quietly returned and is growing in secret. The surface appearance of cold and the underlying reality of yang create their most profound tension at this very moment. It was through years of gnomon observations that the ancients "saw" with their own eyes this yang recovery hidden behind the bitter cold--they saw the shadow at Great Cold unquestionably shorter than at the Winter Solstice, and so they held firm in their conviction: though the ground freezes and the heavens are cold, the power of spring is already on its way.

III. Stars and Year's End: The Pointing of the Big Dipper

Beyond shadow observation, the ancients also grasped the seasons by watching the stars. Most important among these was the direction in which the handle of the Big Dipper (Beidou) pointed.

The Heguanzi, in its chapter "Circulating Flow" (Huanliu), contains a celebrated passage: "When the Dipper's handle points east, all under heaven is spring; when it points south, all under heaven is summer; when it points west, all under heaven is autumn; when it points north, all under heaven is winter." The Big Dipper served as a great celestial clock, its handle (the three stars Yuheng, Kaiyang, and Yaoguang forming the "ladle handle") rotating around the north celestial pole over the course of a year, pointing to different directions corresponding to different seasons.

During Great Cold, the Dipper's handle points to the deep of winter--north--and moreover to winter's very end. Specifically, in the "Dipper-Establishment" (Doujian) system correlating the twelve Earthly Branches with twelve directions and twelve months, the twelfth month (Chou month) in which Great Cold falls has the Dipper's handle pointing to the "Chou" position--north-northeast. This direction is deeply suggestive: it is no longer due north (the "Zi" position, corresponding to the eleventh month of the Winter Solstice and the moment of pure yin), but has shifted one notch from north toward the east--and east is the direction of spring, of yang-qi, of sunrise. The handle's shift from "Zi" (due north) to "Chou" (north-northeast) brings it one more step from "Yin" (east-northeast)--and "Yin" is precisely the establishment of the first month, where Start of Spring resides!

This subtle shift in the Dipper's orientation once again proclaims through celestial signs the essential nature of Great Cold: though the handle still points northward (still winter), it has already begun its deflection toward the east (spring). Heaven's pointer is quietly, steadfastly turning in the direction of spring. The ancients looked up at the Big Dipper, saw the handle in the year-end's cold night pointing to the Chou position and about to enter the Yin position, and confirmed in their hearts: this year is about to end, and the spring of the new year has already been reserved in the Dipper's pointing.

IV. The Twelve Pitches and the Twelve Months: Great Cold Paired with Dalv

The ancients also had an extraordinary method for grasping time--pairing musical pitches with months.

They correlated the twelve months of the year with the twelve pitchpipes, calling this the "pitch-calendar" (lv li). The method begins with Huangzhong (Yellow Bell) as the pitch for the eleventh month (Zi month) containing the Winter Solstice, then proceeds in order: Dalv (Great Regulator) paired with the twelfth month (Chou month), Taicu (Grand Budding) paired with the first month (Yin month)... and so on through twelve pitches cycling through twelve months, corresponding to the solar terms.

The twelfth month (Chou month) in which Great Cold falls is paired with the pitch "Dalv." This pairing resonates profoundly with Great Cold's significance as the year's terminal term, and we shall explore it in a dedicated later chapter on musical pitches. For now, note simply this: the month of Great Cold takes the pitch Dalv; and Dalv's "lv" belongs to the "yin pitches" (the six lv are yin, the six lv yang) in the ancient pitch system, corresponding precisely to Great Cold's pure yin. Yet Dalv follows directly after Huangzhong (Huangzhong being the pitch of "yang-qi's initial birth," paired with the Winter Solstice's return of one yang), just as Great Cold follows Minor Cold and the Winter Solstice, occupying the time when yang-qi has been born but not yet manifested. The very name Dalv implies "assisting Huangzhong, propagating yang-qi"--yet another exquisite confirmation of "yin at its extreme while yang has already begun its hidden germination."

V. Why Were the Ancients So Committed to Astronomical Observation$24

Reviewing all the above--degrees of ecliptic longitude, shadow lengths, Dipper orientation, pitch-calendar correlations--we cannot help but ask: why did the ancients employ such elaborate, such precise methods to fix a solar term that merely marks "a cold period at year's end"$25

The answer returns once more to those four characters, "respectfully bestow the seasons," but at Great Cold they carry an especially deep resonance.

For an agricultural people, the year's end was a time filled with uncertainty and anxiety. The year's harvest had long been stored away, the fields lay desolate, all things had sunk into silence. At such a moment, what did people need most$26 Certainty--the certainty that this silence was not eternal, that spring would surely return, that a new round of plowing and harvest would eventually begin. The only basis for such certainty was astronomy. When the ancients saw through their gnomons that the shadow was indeed shortening, through the Big Dipper that the handle was indeed deflecting eastward, through pitch-calendar computations that after Dalv must come Taicu--from these iron laws of celestial phenomena they derived an absolute faith in "spring's certain return."

Astronomical observation at year's end was therefore not merely a technical means of determining agricultural timing, but a profound source of spiritual solace and sustaining faith. It told the people anxious in the bitter cold: the Way of Heaven has its constancy, its cycles never cease; no matter how cold the winter, it must have an end; no matter how deep the night, dawn must eventually arrive. This certainty drawn from celestial signs was the fundamental basis on which the ancients could maintain hope amid the year-end's bitter cold and serenely "bid farewell to the old and welcome the new." All the astronomy of Great Cold comes down, in the end, to a science of "hope."
