The Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), in its section on the Grand Minister of Education, records: "By the method of the gnomon-and-template, measure the earth's depth, correct the sun's shadow, and seek the center of the earth." The gnomon-and-template (guibiao) was one of the oldest astronomical instruments in China. A vertically erected pole (biao, the gnomon) plus a horizontally placed ruler (gui, the template) constituted a complete astronomical observation system. By measuring the length of the gnomon's shadow at noon, the ancients could precisely determine the sun's height in the sky and thereby identify the solar terms.
At the Summer Solstice, the noon shadow is shortest because the sun is at its highest position in the sky; at the Winter Solstice, the noon shadow is longest because the sun is at its lowest.
