Appendix III: A Quick-Reference Table of Annual Purple-White Stars for the Twenty Years of Period Nine (2024–2043)
Following the starting formula for the annual Purple-White given in Section 9.3, the star entering the center for each of the twenty years of Period Nine is laid out below, along with the directions most commonly checked in practice—those occupied by Five Yellow and Two Black (the year's boundary is taken, by convention, at the start of the year; different lineages differ over whether this boundary falls at the Beginning of Spring or the first day of the lunar new year; this table is offered for illustrative study only):
| Gregorian Year | Ganzhi | Star Entering the Center | Location of Five Yellow | Location of Two Black (the Sickness Talisman) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Jiachen | Three Green | Due West | Southeast
Yisi | Two Black | Northeast | Center
Bingwu | One White | Due South | Northwest
Dingwei | Nine Purple | Due North | Due West
Wushen | Eight White | Southwest | Northeast
Jiyou | Seven Red | Due East | Due South
Gengxu | Six White | Southeast | Due North
Xinhai | Five Yellow | Center | Southwest
Renzi | Four Emerald | Northwest | Due East
Guichou | Three Green | Due West | Southeast
Jiayin | Two Black | Northeast | Center
Yimao | One White | Due South | Northwest
Bingchen | Nine Purple | Due North | Due West
Dingsi | Eight White | Southwest | Northeast
Wuwu | Seven Red | Due East | Due South
Jiwei | Six White | Southeast | Due North
Gengshen | Five Yellow | Center | Southwest
Xinyou | Four Emerald | Northwest | Due East
Renxu | Three Green | Due West | Southeast
Guihai | Two Black | Northeast | Center
The pattern is plain to see: the star entering the center decreases year by year and cycles every nine years, so the positions of Five Yellow and Two Black likewise cycle on a nine-year period (2024, 2033, and 2042 share the same configuration in the table). Traditional practice takes the direction occupied by Five Yellow or Two Black in a given year as the direction where "breaking ground should be avoided" that year—readers can use this table to check for themselves the source of any given year's popular-media claim about "which direction should be avoided for renovation this year."
